OT - Best Burger In Each State

Submitted by Moe on

Came across this list on Yahoo today.  No big surprise as Blimpy Burger was the vote for Michigan.  As a Chicago resident, I was happy to see Au Cheval make the list for Illinois as that burger is to die for.  And lastly, the best burger I ever had made the cut, at Parlour in Minneapolis.  So board, did the list do your state justice?

My favorite burger is probably this hole in the wall place in Detroit by Eastern Market called Cutters Bar and Grill.  My burger is always medium rare, nice thick bacon, good seasoning and a nice soft bun.  You can get your burger anywhere from a half pound up to two pounds.  They also have stuffed burgers.

One time I ordered chilli cheese frys with my burger and when it came out, I didn't see the cheese becasue it was under the chili.  I asked the waitress if there was cheese on there and it turned out it was shredded cheddar cheese, and the chili was put on top just to melt it.  The cook sticks his head out of the kitchen and shouts "We ain't got none of that squeezed cheese (Chefmates canned cheese for example) bullshit up in here!  We get the freshest ingredients."  To their credit they do becasue they get everything from Eastern Market basically.

For Chicago Kuma's is definitely my favorite- they usually have an awesome beer selection as well. In Michigan I'd have to go with Millers- they are always consistently excellent and I just love that spot in general.

I just moved to Omaha not too long ago.. It gave the honor to Dinker's, although it mentions Stella's as being good in the discussion. I've yet to make my way to Dinker's, but it'll be very difficult to top the burger at Stella's. Stella's could make a case for the best burger I've ever had. My coworker says Stella's is the best. Going to have to make my way to Dinker's soon and see if this list got it right or not.

In Kentucky, I think you'd be hard pressed to find a better burger than at Louisville's Mussel and Burger Bar. The owners own a number of Louisville's best restaurants that are worth a visit too. At MABB they serve up several varieties of seasoned mussels, a decent selection of craft beers, and about 10 different style burgers at a nice venue. It's out go to for casual dining; get there early or prepare to wait awhile.

My favorite burger place on the other side of the state is Charlie's in Grand Rapids.  The filthy pig is a half pound burger with a half pound of bacon on it.  They also have a bacon burger topped with peanut butter , jelly and a fried egg.  The Charlie's burger is a 1.5 pound patty topped with ham.

Clyde's Big C is the best burger in the state of Michigan! Worth the drive to St. Ignace or the Soo. And by worth the drive, I mean worth the drive from New York.

None.

I have never eaten a burger at a hyped location that measured up to what I can get at home. And its never been close.

The only places I find that have eye-opening burgers are typically medium/high-end restaurants that do something unusual (exceptionally sturdy, flavorful buns, organic toppings, understand what medium-rare really means, or pre-season the meat before cooking).

The bun and the meat are 95 percent of it.  If you fail either one even a little, just forget it. After that, you MUST NOT have soggy tomato and it cannot be the typical bioengineered tastless tomato you get at supermarkets. Don't skimp on the ketchup.  Every restaurant in America needs to double what it thinks is an appropriate ketchup dose.

The best burger I've ever eaten is prepared by my wife (with unfortunate rarity).

If I could find a great burger place in Orlando, I'd be really happy. But, I've been to all the upscale burger bars and left shaking my head.

I probably take burgers a bit too seriously.

I don't think you take them seriously enough, but that could be based on your location.  I'm assuming that like pretty much everything else in Orlando, the food is pretty bland and made to conform to a base norm to please the tourists.

If you get a chance to travel to Chicago, check out any of the places mentioned in this thread. But please, eat it the way it comes from the kitchen and don't add ketchup.

You had me with the "medium rare" comment.  You hooked me in with the point about needing a perfect tomato.  And then you lost me.  Ketchup?

The only reason to put ketchup on a burger is to cover up the fact that the meat is low quality or underseasoned.  And if it's either, you shouldn't be eating the burger in the first place.

Oh LeBron you have much to learn. I had a hand-pulled dogfish head 90 minute IPA served at a crisp 55 degrees at Ashley's once and it was AMAZING. Now when I have really nice brews at home with a solid malt undertone (e.g., Founders Backwoods Bastard or Breakfast Stout), I let them warm up a bit before drinking. So good that way

Not only do I think state is too large of a area for declaring a best burger (I live in NYC, good luck deciding on the best burger here, let alone accounting for the rest of the state), but I feel categories or type of burger needs to be taken into consideration.

Blimpy is greasy and delicious in it's own right, and the experience is unique, but sometimes I might want something like a bison burger with unique toppings, which in my mind is a whole different beast of a sandwich. Local greasy burger joint... or a classic bacon cheeseburger with a nice beer at the local bar... or maybe a nicer sit down restaurant burger. Depends what I'm in the mood for.

Au Cheval isn't the best burger in the Chi, come on now. Kuma's Corner all the way! (I kid, I kid- it's highly subjective, obviously; you can't go wrong at either place).

I lived in New Orleans this past summer and I really liked Company Burger, but it was not my favorite. Yo Mama Bar and Grill on St. Peter St. was easily the best burger I had in the city. Never thought peanut butter, bacon and hamburger went together, but my oh my did it ever.

Of course, no one goes to New Orleans for burgers. They go to Pascal's Manale for the best damn BBQ shrimp you will find anywhere.

Casey's opened the year I moved to A2.  For many years, I would put their burgers up against anyone's anywhere. For me, it was about the high-quality beef, which I wasn't afraid to order how I really like it... bloody rare.

After moving to another part of the area, I didn't get back there very much.  I finally went back... I'm gonna say this is about 5 or 6 years or so ago now...  and the beef on their burgers tasted like they had added a filler. Just tasted like some sort of grain. I gave 'em the benefit of the doubt and went back a second time not too long (maybe a month or so?) after that....  same, grainy taste. Haven't been back since.

Holy shit, I totally forgot about that place.  They did have a very good burger.  I was Eastern for a teaching cert, and we used to get one or two of the professors to hang out with us there after class back in the day.  Good times.
