OT - Best Barber in Ann Arbor?

Submitted by tdcarl on

I know this is quite OT, but I'm in the market for a haircut soon so I'm seeking board help on the best barber shop to go to. I usually just go home to my barber at home for a haircut, but its getting pretty un-manageable and I can't wait much longer. Some advice on good places and their prices would be great. Thanks.

Jerry's a great guy, and I believe his oldest son is running a chair there now... or at least he was (also a great guy, I grew up playing hockey with him).  Be forewarned though (always a running joke inside the lockerroom growing up) avoid going there to get a cut in the evenings or on gamedays when the Labatt's starts flowing...

There's a great picture of Bo in Coach and Four that's signed "To Jerry--The Worst Barber in Ann Arbor!" That's where I go, and I know Red gets his hair cut there, and I think Coach Beilein does as well. It's fun to look at all of the stuff he has in the place too. The last time I was in there my keys fell out of my pocket and I turned around to pick them up and noticed there was a goalie stick hanging behind my chair signed by Dominik Hasek.

Is she still there?  She was my favorite back in the mid-late 90's when I was there.  Good price and the best at cutting Asian hair (which tends to be straight, thick and course) in town.  She's really nice and ALWAYS remembers the regulars.

Yep,

My family has known about the place since the mid-90s as well.  It's one of the best, most consistent haircuts I've ever gotten.  Even though I've not lived in Ann Arbor for 6 years, and my parents moved 2 years ago, I still go back and get haircuts from June whenever I am in town.

If you want affordability, quality, and fantastic family-level service, there's no better place to go.

Great to hear Coach and Four is still running with the same owner.  They were the best choice I found in my years in Ann Arbor.  I also liked them because it was where Bo had his hair cut.  (Bo was still coaching when I was in Ann Arbor.)  I always hoped I'd find Bo sitting in the other chair while I was there, but no such luck.

I used to get my hair cut there too. Jerry's a hockey nut but we also used to talk football, politics, and other stuff. Sometimes there would be, er, interesting characters just hanging out there as opposed to waiting to get their hair cut.

It's cheap, you get a scalp massage, and the staff is young and friendly.  I had to get over my unease of actually walking in there for the first time, but I'd recommend you give it a shot.

Bill has been cutting my hair for years now.  I love all the Michigan stuff he has in there too.  Plus, he often has some inside info on Michigan sports from people who come in there.  The place is always a mess and looks like it hasn't been remodelled since Eisenhower was in office.  But, if you don't mind that, i'd highly recommend it.  I have been in the Coach and Four too and it's fine also.

Random story:

I'm as a blind a bat without my glasses on, can't see shit.  So i'm sitting there in the chair, glasses off, with Bill cutting my hair and we're bitching about the defense (this was right after the Wisconsin game so lots of angry venting).  Someone comes in and Bill shuts up but I deliver one last rant about the defense.  Bill changes the subject quickly to hockey.

I get my glasses back, look over, and realize a defensive posistion coach is next in line and was the guy who came in.  The coach is studying the WSJ very intently and ignoring me.  The next time I was in Bill's only comment was "Well what he was going to say?  The defense sucks."

I also like Bill because he knows my vision is limited w/o the glasses and points out the cute girls / describes them as they walk by the windows.

classic bill.  the man makes me blush a bit when he starts talking about girls as they walk by.  a bit of a dirty old man but always a riot to listen to .  it also helps that he's originally from Powers MI about an hour and a half from my home town.

Been going to him for years. $$ depends on what you need done, but I've always found him very reasonable and we talk hockey and football while he's cutting. Great guy.

I don't know if it's the best or the cheapest, but you should go to Coach and Four at least once in your lifetime if you're a Michigan sports fan.

I was always a Dascola man back when Ernie (a true yooper) and Luis I think was the other guy were there.  Bob Dascola took it over and moved the shop from E. Liberty to State Street upstairs from Ben & Jerry's I think.  Not the same atmosphere up there, but they still did a great businessman's haircut as of 2002.

I had my worst haircut ever at Dascola.  They gave me the widest, worst white walls.  Not quite as bad as the white walls that Humphrey Bogart's character gets in the haircut scene at the beginning of "The Treasure of Sierra Madre," but too close to that for my comfort.

Arcade Barber in Nickel's Arcade (shocker, right?) is my favorite. I've been to State Street and Coach & Four, and as cool as they are, I still don't think they compare to Arcade Barber.

As much as I hate the Chad guy on the ads and the kind of "dude" feel to the place, Erin at the Lady Jane's on Washtenaw by Arbor Land does an incredible job.  I searched the area for a decent hair cut for years and she is by far the best I've found (I'm not actually on campus anymore, so the above mentioned places would be harder for me to pull off).  $16.

If you're up for a small road trip, Barber's Inn in downtown Saline is fantastic.  John has been at it since 1979, and my brother, dad, and myself have all been customers either since he opened or were born, in my case.  Saline's a nice place to visit, anyway.

What about the porno barber just off South U.  I can't remember what street it was on (maybe Chruch).  Not too great a haircut, but all they had to read was porn.
