OT - Ben Wallace sentenced to 1 year in prison (suspended)

Submitted by Cold War on

Former NBA and Virginia Union University basketball star Ben Wallace entered a plea of no contest after he was arrested Tuesday for leaving the scene of a February car crash. Wallace received a one year jail sentence. The Henrico County judge suspended all but two days of the sentence. Wallace started serving his two day sentence Tuesday. “It’s kind of light for a situation like that,” said Tim Olive who lives near the scene of where the crash happened.

So Tim Olive is just some guy who lives near the scene?  I'm not sure that really makes him qualfieid to speak about the relative harshness of sentences.

so i know nothing about sentencing (thankfully?). is that basically parole? i realizes he's in jail for only 2 days. also as grantham noted, seems weird to get sentencing guidelines from a random citizen. yeah he left the scene, but it was just a fence.

I'm cool with it. He didn't hurt anyone, luckily and a fence lost it's life. 2 days in jail seems like enough.

For me it has more to do with whether a law was broken, not whether there were catastrophic results following the breaking of the law.

There's a reason it's a law not to leave the scene of an accident. One of the bigger reasons (I suspect) is proving whether the operator of the vehicle was under the
influence which, depending on the number of times that's occurred in the past, can carry some stiff penalties.

Anyway, my point is simply that it doesn't necessarily matter to me if no one got hurt. The opportunity for someone getting hurt was certainly there on top of the fact that he left the scene.

He was definitely wasted. He took out a massive section of the fence.

I like the fact that Ben Wallace thought he could just run away from the scene and not get caught.
"What did he look like, sir?"

"Uh . . . you might want to look for the 6'10" guy."

I thought maybe he'd have a gun for protection in the car and they'd find it. But probably not since he can't shoot.

I'm sure Ben will rebound from this.

My business law professor actually once told us in class that if we ever got into an accident after drinking you would be better off leaving the scene of the crash leaving the car and going straight to the bar because the penalty for leaving the scene of an accident is nowhere near as bad as drunk driving.

I got shit faced drunk and totaled my car. I then proceeded to leave the scene. Cops came to my house for a week straight, but I just stayed inside and said they couldn't come in, and even with many empty threats from the cops, they eventually left me alone and I faced no legal consequences.
