OT-BCS Bet

Submitted by Ziff72 on

For those of you that like to wager I found a bet I really like.   Clemson is 200-1 to win the BCS.  While obviosuly a long shot I think they offer a realistic shot considering they play in the ACC and they get many of their tough games at home.  Read this preview.

If they get even close near the end of the season you can start betting against them to insure you win some cash. As a bonus if they tank and blow your money,  you can get ready for the RR era to begin in 2012 at Clemson because if they don't win at least 9 Swinney is toast.  100 to win 20,000 lock it in.

PS I still think Mich has a miracle shot if they get past ND, but I didn't want to ruin my credibility, oops just did, but at 75-1 and huge jinx possibilites it just doesn't work.

Strictly looking at the talent they've brought in, I love the 200-1 odds.  However, I would argue that Clemson may have the worst coaches in the NCAA from a talent utilization standpoint.

Year in and year out they are classic underachievers.  You are right.   They have amazing recruiting classes and they brought in a Malzhan protege to run the offense so new coach on O and on D they were pretty good at the end of the year.  They do lose some studs on d but they are loaded with athletes.

Personally I was hoping they would suck so RR could get that job and blow up the ACC, but I don't see it.  I think it would be perfect for him.

There's a reason they're 200-1..

They have great recruiting every year, so their talent is there. They're just awful at developing that talent and doing something with it..

ACC might hurt them. For whatever reason there have been at least 2 undefeated teams if not more from legitimate conferences at the end of the year (SEC, Big 12, Big Ten, Pac-10) recently. If this trend continues there will be no room for even an undefeated ACC team. Clemson could surprise some people but winning the BCS seems very unlikely because they wont even get a shot at the title game unless they go undefeated and the rest of the field has a shit-fest like the 2007 season.

I like the reasoning behind the bet but I can't throw down any of my own money.  It violates the "Never Bet On Clemson" rule I created for myself over years of getting burnt by that school.

I bet Arizona State at 75-1 earlier this spring.  Same principle of your Clemson bet... lots of returning players, USC should be down, and their schedule is actually decent enough to get them into the discussion if they run the table.  Games 2 and 3 are home for Mizzu and at Illinois.  Not gimmes, but games they should win and that look better than playing Eastern Wash or Idaho.

Out of the 13 game and 26 teams that have played for a BCS championship only 4 of them have not been ranked in the AP top 25 at the end of the year before.

Interesting though that every team including 2000 Oklahoma, 2002 Ohio State, 2003 LSU, and 2010 Auburn has gone on to win the game. (Auburn was ranked in final top 25 of some polls and Ohio State dropped out of the top 25 after the bowls so both were close to being on the list)

All of them had a winning record the previous year unlike Clemson who went 6-7 this past year.

It isn't a terrible bet given those odds but this would be a first for a losing team the previous year to even get to the championship game. There are other bets I like better :)

If you want a team that could shock out of the ACC (big homer pick coming) look at the odds for Maryland.  One of the best unkown returning quarterbacks in the country, a solid recieving core and one of the best unkown talents in the country on defense in kenny tate (bunch of people said he could be first round talent).  Eddsal is a solid coach and transition hopefully shouldn't be too rough, not sure what their odds are but I can pretty safely say its a better bet than on clemson, thats throwing money away.

I go to sportsinteraction.com where they have Clemson as 100 to 1 which is also where they have Michigan.

Sportsinteraction also has Denard tied at #2 for odds to win the Heisman tied with Marcus Lattimore and of course Luck at #1.

Yes, I agree, I think Clemson ALWAYS does worse than they should.  They are a classic Illinois-type team.  Stacked with pretty good talent and depth, but for some reason never perform in the season for crap.  I still am amazed they are so successful at recruiting!  How does that even work?  Seriously, they're Clemson...
