We wouldn't necessarily need to retaliate. Enough students at a certain school about an hour and some change northwest of Ann Arbor pee in the Grand River that the water and the banks are devoid of substantial life......
OT: Bama fan poisons trees at Auburn
Technically it's the Red Cedar River that runs through EL, if you're going by straight facts. It meets up with the Grand River in Lansing several miles W of East Lansing.
Hopefully the a-hole gets arrested for vandalism, and gets put in an Auburn jail. Justice would then be served... But even that, though satisfying, can't bring back 130 years of a tree's life.
Agreed. The only 130 year old thing that lives on campus and deserves to be poisoned is Gene Chizik.
Pawwwwwl, I done poisoned dem trees. Pawwwwwl.
jeebus...srsly. Alabama Fans...
Alumni networking at its finest.
that pic looks photoshopped to me. It looks like the fat red balloon was placed on top of the existing image.
That's awful, yet it is not surprising.
There are some major friggin idiots out there.
"The trees are on Auburn's campus, therefore they are obviously Tiger trees! They must die!"
The south, man. Ugh.
There are stupid people everywhere.
But where inbreeding is considered a "lifestyle choice" you certainly get more of them.
That's true, but I'd argue that there's a higher concentration of stupid people in the South. I've lived in the Midwest, the West, the East Coast, and the South, and based on my experience, I'd give the award of "most stupid people per capita" to the South.
If you ever lived in Ohio, you might want to do a little rethinking of where stupid people reside.
There are. But after living in Alabama for 27 years, I can tell you, we have more than our share.
It'll be a huge middle finger to that guy and Bama fans when the trees end up surviving and even thriving. That'd be sweet
not suprised alabama is full of white trash......been to auburn's campus and the trees are really cool......what a shame.
Pssssssh poinsoning trees?!?!?
We go to war with our rivals! Albeit a relatively peaceful war, but still, WAR!
unitl he was 27 but from then on... Roll Tide
They should cut down the trees before they rot, build a wooden horse and give it to Bama as a gift....
Beware Tigers bearing gifts.....
Learned that one the hard way.
And the SEC always seemed so classy...Seriously, though, that's terrible.
Like school in July, man.
Well state did spray paint angel halls pillars....which was bad.
But this actually is worse.
I'm pretty sure paint takes <1 day to fix. You can't grow a 130 year old tree over night.
Not true. They tried to get the paint off for a long time and it wasn't for a while until you couldn't notice it anymore.
WIth that said, its still not the same as killing 150 year old living trees....(that happen to be a main part of campus)
one of the best things about college sports (and college football in particular) is all of the tradition and all the notable land marks. M club banner, auburns trees, georgias hedges, etc. destroying them is just stupid. sure it'd be hilarious to paint a winged helmet on the sparty statue but why ruin the whole fun of everything by destroying it?
There's an M Club banner from 1998 that currently resides in Syracuse, NY. Only game since they've been using the banner that Michigan didn't run out under it.
I mean, just wow. What a terrible thing. The only way this turns out OK is if Alabama and Auburn get together and find a way to save the trees. I really hope there are no similar failures at humanity who are "inspired" to similar acts elsewhere.
Very true, Alabama should volunteer their staff or funding or something. I realize it isn't their responsibility, but if they do literally nothing (and it seems they haven't even released a statement yet) they look like they condone this.
Call me a tree-hugging hippy, but that sort of disrespect for a living thing is abominable. I understand and even endorse getting rid of trees when they're in the way of progress. But killing a living thing because of a perverted sense of rivalry is disgusting.
Sadly, we can't even say this is just a "southern" thing, as other posters have. About a century ago, before the Harvard-Yale game, Harvard's coach tried to motivate his team by strangling a bulldog in the locker room.
Apparently we haven't come all that far in a century. Disgusting.
Pretty sure that's just a story that never actually happened. Besides, you're not equating trees to dogs, are you? I think the perpetrator oughta be exiled to Mongolia myself (not many trees there), but still.
I got a little carried away. And thank God that story's not real. It really bothered me when I first heard about it. I'm still depressed for humanity that this jackass exists in Alabama. He belongs in the West Texas moonscape.
Thanks for picking up on this as well. A coach choking a dog out is not the same as some dumb ass fan killing a tree. Sorry, I can't make that leap with you. If the find the guy they should give him a 1,000 paper cuts.
"A radio station gets a caller from a guy claiming he poisoned the trees at Auburn's Toomer's Corner, and yells "Roll damn Tide" and hangs up."
Ladies and Gentlemen. May I present to you, the Deep South.
Not even a modicum of perspective. Wow.
If a tree falls on him in the woods and nobody's around to hear it... would anybody care?
If it lands on Nick Saban then no
Of course, like all things, this works both ways.
Mixing two kinds of grass on a lawn vs. killing 150 year old trees.
Maybe I'm just more sympathetic to the Auburn fans because I really hate Alabama, but it seems like a subtle difference to me.
I'm not a hippie, but they better be able to save that tree. It's unlikely though.
That's just an ass thing to do.
I have two words for the Auburn Police: Caller ID.....
Living in Louisiana for the past 12 years this is not suprising to me at all.
I find myself hoping for some kind of Ent scenario where Treebeard and friends hunt the idiot down and give him a taste of his own medicine.
It ain't cheap, but you can transplant trees. Major golf courses have transplanted some massive trees overnight to cut off lanes golfers were abusing in PGA events. if I was bama, I'd be looking to buy up a grove of beautiful old trees and getting some enviornmental phds to figure out how to clear the soil asap.
Just like if some dumb UM fan (they do exist) actually physically destroyed sparty I'd be hoping to god the UM leadership paid for a newer, possibly better sparty statue to quell any chances of revenge. Otherwise it could get ugly.
In any case - there are remedies that bama can and should pursue.
Actually, this was my first thought, too. If you can transplant an entire house (ever see the two out-of-place Victorians on Huron Parkway near Washtenaw?), it seems conceivable that you could carefully excavate the trees and their root systems, remediate the soil, and re-plant them. But I'm not a forester, so I have no idea if it's too late for such a response.
I have no idea what the cost would be. But I'm sure that Auburn could raise enough "Save the Trees" donations to defray the cost. To save the trees would be a giant F U to Alabama (and mouth-breathing bottom-feeders everywhere).
I'm sure transplanting the trees is doable, but I feel like cleaning the soil would be significantly more difficult. I'm no expert or anything, that just seems like a big task to me...
Police got the guy. His name is Harvey Almorn Updike:
Shocking. Doesn't look like the type of guy to do such a thing...
This is crazy what an ass. I'm all for painting the rock or sparty statue but killing 100+ y/o trees is terrible.
I think justice will be served. Commit a crime in Auburn -> get tried by a prosecutor, judge, and jury who are all AU alums.
Not to make light of the situation (which is terrible), but I couldn't help but to laugh at this:
A small group gathered and rolled the trees Wednesday afternoon.
Even better, the guy was stupid enough to give his real name, and has already been arrested.
Really really dumb, for real. Hopefully the punishment is more than just a fine.
This is just too much. I was going to tell you to post this as an entirely new thread because it is a different topic, but I saw this was your first post.
Epic job on your first post AMCWolverine.
Why is it a different topic? Heck, it's a repeat post within the topic.
Really? It wasn't posted here when I first went through, or I must have been reading with the blinders on. My bad.
It is different though, maybe not thread worthy, but this was about the incident, then the new part is that the person was caught. It'll be new again when he's at trial.
From the article:
Bond has been set at $50,000, but we mean this quite sincerely: Don't leave jail, man. Don't leave jail, because you will die. This isn't a threat. This is Alabama. Somebody will kill you dead, and finding a sympathetic court to avenge your passing won't be easy, so just hunker down. (For the uninitiated: The thing about the Alabama-Auburn rivalry is the statewide cross-pollination of fans of both schools. It's house-to-house fighting of a sort you'd normally see in an eastern European civil war action flick, and you won't know who's after you until it's too late. One would assume Updyke knows all this already, but again: Gave his real name and hometown to the Finebaum call screeners.)
I think that's roughly 60% serious.
From an article linked from that one he's been charged with Criminal Mischief:
1st Degree Criminal Mischief Laws & Penalties
Criminal mischief in the first degree is committed when you damage property with intent to do so by explosion or by causing more than $2,500 in damage.
This serious property offense is a Class C felony punishable by 1 to 10 years in prison and up to $15,000 in fines.
Got this on an Alabama law site.
saw that tweet by LSUFreek.
is awesome and has WAY too much time on his hands.
Strap him to a chair. Tilt his head back. Put a funnel down his throat. Pour in 12 oz of Jack Daniels mixed with one jigger of vermouth and one-half cup of Spike 80DF. Tell him it's a Roll Tide Manhattan and he'll go happy.
I'm all for rivalries, but this is too far. You do stuff that is easy fixable, and, though possibly in poor taste, doesn't harm life.
You don't have to be a "tree-hugger" to recognize that 130 years is a damn long time, and a campus tradition is a terrible thing to lose.
This is where rivalries go wrong in my opinion. To me, insults, jokes, and good old fashion hatred is fine, but don't let it go to permeant vandalism or violence. For example, when we lost to msu, they painted the rock, yeah, ok, it's really annoying, but that's fine in my opinion. However, they also spray painted street signs, etc. that's too far. This is even beyond that. I hope they catch the guy
