OT - Bama backup QB to transfer to Toledo

Submitted by GoWings2008 on

Per ESPN, Phillip Ely is transferring to Toledo.  Most likely because of the QB haul they took in the past year...three of them in total.  He hasn't had much of an impact (3 for 4, 42 yds and one TD last season), but it seems like now they're pretty bottom heavy on talent moving forward.

Of note, Ohio State and Illinois were in the running to get him.

Edit:  Fixed Ohio to read Ohio State.  Apologies.

Is this what we've come to?  Its not like a "pet name" that we've used for them before...its technically accurate and not a made up word, as opposed to the names they have for us.  And in the confines of our world here, I see no problem using this label.

As recently as last year, its been discussed and agreed upon within the MGoCommunity, or at least I thought, that OHIO = Bobcats...and then there's Ohio.  Or ohio as I'll use from time to time.

I can't make fun of them without everyone having a hard time with it?  What gives, man?

I don't have a problem with you making fun of them, but it was very unclear. I read this site plenty, and I'm still confused whether OHIO or Ohio is OSU. Calling them ohio doesn't make fun of them, but it leads to these types of arguments. If you're talking about something that is clearly OSU, call them whatever you want. But I (and clearly others) thought you meant the MAC school in this post, probably since it was in the same post as another Ohio MAC school.

Well, I'm not going to go back to that post every time I get confused, and someone down this post said that OHIO is TSIO, meaning OSU, so obviously he confuses it as well. I know that it was a thing, but that thing has proven to be more confusing than it's worth.

This is exactly why the "Ohio" stuff (Bobcats or Buckeyes?) is annoying.  A guy transfers to a MAC school in the state of Ohio, and "Ohio" was also in the running.  Naturally, one would assume that a team on the same level as Toledo (the Ohio Bobcats) would be mentioned, but in this case, it's the Ohio State Buckeyes.

It's really not that difficult to add "State" on the end.

But Hoke only says it in a context that's not confusing. When he talks about our game against Ohio when Ohio U is not on he schedule, it confuses no one. In this context, it's very confusing and I assumed Ohio university, not OSU. I really wish this would stop.

It mentions a MAC school as his choice, then say ohio and Illinois were also interested... OHIO U is a big whoop to me...Toledo is traditionally more successful, while drawing the attention of two B1G teams made sense as to say this guy was no slouch... And living in the border area, their fans also prefer it, that's all they can spell, I hear oh-io at weddings, funerals, it's like a bizare mating call for mentally challenged individuals or something. So for me, it made all the sense in the world. The arrogance here sometimes is amazing. I didn't see anywhere in a user agreement where posts had to conform to the majority template.

I think Ely was a teammate of Tony Posada in high school.  Maybe Posada will come out of retirement to play with his old quarterback.

Phillip Ely -- everytime I see his name (I remember it in recruiting), I confuse him either with Phil Sims Jr. or Ely Manning, as if he's some sort of blend of the two.

I wonder if Saban recommended for him to transfer to Toledo, where he previously coached at and is familiar with the program, rather than go to OSU where his best buddy Urban Meyer coaches..

I am wondering why anyone on a M blog would really need to know about Alabama's second string quarterback.

<insert lame "You obviously did since you clicked the link" response>

I didn't read the link provided by the OP and only clicked the the thread to voice my opinion.

not too excited about this move.  After Michigan, NIU is my second favorite school since I have family who has attended both Michigan and NIU and plus NIU helped me in passing the CPA.  Because of this I won't be too upset if he doesn't make an impact at Toledo.

Being a recent Toledo alum, I'm happy about this move. NIU has been impressive the last couple years and should continue having success. The same goes with Toledo. Maybe the MAC can get back to the level that they were in the late 90's through the mid 2000's

It is not demeaning to call OSU (as I am going to refer to them) OHIO or Ohio or ohio. It makes no sense and is silly. With all the mental horsepower here, surely someone could come up with something better and less confusing.

You guys seriously need to get off your high horse.  I agree with Kork Coupons or Spartoons.  Those are stupid, but it's a college rivalry and I don't understand why one must be politically correct.

Dunno why you have your knickers in a twist over this.  Don Canham called them "Ohio" (watch "Bo Schembechler's Wolverines" and see him do it), Brady Hoke calls them "Ohio."  Lots of the other coaches and players do, as well.

The answer is simple.  There is "Ohio" and "Ohio (NTO)."  We make reference to Ohio University so seldom that this actually saves keystrokes over "Ohio State."

OSU (I have no problem with that) does NOT play in "Ohio State Stadium." Ohio may have a problem with that, but I don't.  Script Ohio is done at Ohio stadium by the Ohio marching band.

He was considered a pro style QB coming out of HS, but somewhat short (6'1") and decent speed (4.57 40). It'll be interesting to see what happens. he might be a good fit, as Toledo loves to air it out, but runs a spread, so the QB still needs to be an anklebreaker wherever possible.

On that note, since 2009, they've only recruited 4 QB's. A 2-star in '09, nobody in 10 OR 11, a 3-Star in 12 and two 2-stars this year. That's a situation that a guy can find playing time in. Sitting out a year is fine anyway, because this year's team belongs to Senior Terrance Owens.
