OT: Bama-Auburn free game tickets used as ruse to make arrests

Submitted by natesezgoblue on

The ruse — code name: Operation Iron Snare — involved sending a letter to those delinquent in child support, informing them that they had “won” tickets to this year’s Alabama-Auburn game.  All they had to do was show up in person with the letter and photo ID to “claim” their “prize.

Its awkward and hilarious all at the same time.

That's fucked up to get them so happy and then crush them like that. I actually feel sorry for them even though I shouldn't. All the cheering and stuff is just rubbing it in their faces.

The Simpsons as well.

Homer: Up and away in my beautiful motor boat! Da da da da!

Bart: But we didn't enter any police raffle.

Homer: That doesn't matter.  The important thing is we won!

[At the police station]:

Wiggum: You're under arrest, slimebag.  What's this punk in here for, Lou?

Lou: 235 unpaid parking tickets, totalling $175.

Wiggum: I hope you brought your check book, wiseguy.

Homer: [Gets it out his back pocket.] You lousy cops. Lucky for you I'm double parked. [Gives him check] Now, can I please have my motor boat?

Probably saved the sheriff's office a couple of bucks from driving to each address.  Plus when the sheriff gets there, a lot of times the person won't answer the door or claim he/she is someone else.  Also saved time and money from not having to do an investigation to identify the person.

Still, dunno if I appreciate it when public officials are outright lying to citizens.

Cops just don't go around kicking in doors to arrest people even if they know where they live (aside from the most dangerous/wanted offenders).  It wouldn't help their public image, it can put the officers in harm's way, and they are usually busy with the stuff you see them doing every day (traffic, responding to a real emergency, running a jail, etc.).

It is the same reason every guy you see getting stopped on Cops has like 10 warrants out.  The police don't really waste their time running down minor knuckleheads and just assume they will do something to get caught again sooner or later (and if they behave themselves, then problem solved going forward).

granted I'm not a law enforcement official and I have no idea how these things work, I'd assume this ruse also helped them sidestep the process of having to get a warrant. Knowing someone's address doesn't mean much if you don't have a warrant issued.

I loved this. It's so hilariously over the top. Balloons, a banner, the Black Eyed Peas, cops decked out in Bama and Auburn schwag asking which team the deadbeats root for. Thank you Lee County Sheriff's Office. More please.

So what exactly is entrapment???

Don't get me wrong, I am glad they were able to arrest these people but I always heard this sort of thing was illegal but this obviously shows that it is not.  Same with To Catch a Predator.

Entrapment is VERY tough to prove.  You need to prove that the person was not prediposed to commit the crime and that the design for the crime originated with the police.

This would definitely not qualify for entrapment.  The crime has already been committed - refusing to pay child support.
