Well, after one period, team USA has a 5-0 lead on China. I'm putting the over/under of total points for the US at 13, as I think they'll go easy on them in the 3rd. Anyone else watching or am I just way more bored than everyone else?
LONG OVERDUE
That's nothing, Canada beat Slovakia 18-0 yesterday. If I could figure out where it is, I'd watch it.
EDIT: It's on USA. Warning, do not look for any Olympic streams on JTV or Ustream, as I overheard last night watching Montreal and Philadelphia that anyone who puts one up is getting an automatic ban.
My roommate informed me that the U.S. and Canada are waaay better than the rest of the field, with Sweden being a possible dark horse. I guess I'm not all that surprised.
When I sent my buddy a text of that score his reply was:
Wow Slovakia must have one hell of a goalie.
Priceless.
In a great display of sportsmanship from the (mostly) Canadian fans, they cheered her off as she was leaving the ice in tears, presumably for staying for the whole beating and not catching a flight home after the second period.

When I think hockey (of any gender) I DO NOT think China. Don't you have to qualify for the Olympics?

As in the World Cup, the host country qualifies automatically for all team-sport competitions in the Olympics.
But the games are in Vancouver. How would this apply to China in this case?
WAIT WHAT?! This isn't the summer games?

If I'm not mistaken, Canada and the U.S. are the only two countries that have had any kind of women's hockey program for any more than 15 years.
I guess you can say this has caused some monstrous parity issues... Almost any game that is Canada or U.S. v. country X is probably going to have a score kind of like that.
Russia puts up a fight every once in awhile, but by and large, the competition is a bit of a joke.
There were about 3 or 4 "real" teams, and a bunch of other countries that served as delicious snackycakes until the semi-finals.
That's the story with a lot of women's team sports... Some countries, especially in Eastern Europe, still consider volleyball and shopping the only acceptable sport for women. My family in Hungary actually thought my little sister was joking when she said she played soccer.
The world looks better through maize mirror tint.
I'm thinking that if you have a women's hockey team, you qualify. There are only 8 teams.

So who wins the Gold... USA or Canada? After carefully analyzing the two teams using everything I know about women's hockey, I predict... CANADA! Why you ask? The coin I just flipped landed tails.
I am out of town for work and bored out of my mind so yes I am switching back and forth between USA and NBC while simultaneously hitting refresh every few minutes on mgoblog to see if anything new has been posted. What a life.
Anyway, from the almighty wikipedia...
The top six teams in the IIHF Women's World Ranking after the 2008 Women's World Ice Hockey Championships received automatic berths. Teams ranked 13th and below were divided into two groups for a first qualification round in September 2008. The two group winners advanced to the second qualification round, where the teams ranked seventh through twelfth joined them.
i was wondering peoples preference on how to post olympic discussion on the blog here. start a thread for particularly interesting events or should there be an open thread every now and then for the olympics as a whole. not sure how people will feel about three OT posts spaced out over the course of a few hours. post whenever? thoughts?
China has four shots. USA has 50

Yea woman's hockey is brutal, Canada just beat Slovakia 18-0. I thought that was kinda a dick move(hah) running it up like that, until I saw Slovakia made a shammockery of Bulgaria 82-0, how is that even possible? http://sports.yahoo.com/nhl/blog/puck_daddy/post/Bulgarian-women-s-ice-h...

Final Score: USA 12 China 1
At least China got one. Nice to hear the Chinese contingent get something to cheer about.
Reminds me of Mighty Ducks 2 when the Jamaican team puts one in against the US while getting slaughtered and they go NUTS in the stands. That always killed me.

You know you can gamble on those games.
Canada was -11.5 yesterday
USA was -9 today.
Both easy covers.
Canada is -9.5 tomorrow vs the Swiss......i dont know what we are all waiting for. Its time to jump on the bandwagon, maybe?
