OT - Auburn top recruit under investigation over false transcript

http://espn.go.com/college-football/story/_/id/8257979/ncaa-reviewing-prep-transcript-auburn-tigers-jovon-robinson

I find this especially relevant with the Alabama recruit being urged to transfer schools in order to be eligible being in the news as well.

I cannot say that I am at all surprised that this is going on in the SEC.  I am highly skeptical that Auburn did not know that his transcript was tampered with, or at least have some sort of inkling that something was fishy.  IMO this kind of neglect for education is worse than paying players.  Perhaps not from an even playing field stand point but certainly from a moral one.

Vandy is pretty far from being a "decent" school.  It's an outstanding school.  And probably the only SEC school that follows the rules.  I've only heard 1 good argument on why Vandy doesn't want to join the Big Ten.   Vandy's academics are on par or above most of the Big Ten.   They would compete in most sports, including football.   They are a borderline powerhouse baseball team (one of the reasons it wants to stayin the SEC).   But, in my opinion, they would be a MUCH better fit in the Big Ten.

Yeah, because having Ohio State cheating means that the entire B1G is a piece of shit. Give me a break. Just because one school in a conference is cheating doesn't mean the conference itself is broken. The problem with the SEC is that almost everyone in there has their hands dirty in some way.

Also, can we just leave Penn State out of all conversations. What the SEC is doing is cheating and dumb, but Penn State is on a completely different moral level.

I don't disagree with you on OSU, but PSU is a different create all together.  And as weird as it is to say (and my god I don't want to get this argument going again), but what happened at PSU had less to do with the players and more to do with an athletic department that protected one of its own.

The issue people have with the SEC is that it isn't just one or two programs.  I mean, Auburn and Alabama are the two most prominent, but look at Florida under Meyer, the two Miss. schools, LSU, etc.  Every one of those schools has had the stink of recruiting and player "issues" the past couple of years that outstrip those you see in other conferences.  And perhaps worse than anything else, you see other schools and programs being hit with harder sanctions for what appear to be less egregious violations.  Hell, OSU was practically Death Penaltied compared to what happens to most SEC schools for similar infractions.  That's where the animosity seems to come from.

"The statement said schools superintendent Kriner Cash ordered an immediate investigation and that a school guidance counselor resigned after admitting to creating the fake transcript." - from the article

I suppose it is one thing when someone places football over academics, but then to extend an already somewhat warped principle and to introduce academic fraud (repeatedly, in the SEC's case) to the picture really does a disservice to the prospective student-athlete beyond the academics. This is a high-risk, intregrity-oblitterating move that seems like it may very well backfire, and it hurts the reputation the athlete and both the staff of their high school and university. That it should come to things like this over time simply highlights (again) the overimportance place on football in some parts of the country. I don't anticipate the NCAA doing much here, but for many years down in SEC country, a re-assessment of priorities has been in order, and I wonder sometimes what it would take.

Any chance we can maybe relax a bit with the "all SEC schools are cheaters" meme?  I may be the only person on the board whose getting a bit tired of it but man it sure comes off to me like sour grapes.  I totally agree that they get an unfair advantadge in bowl games cause they're usually so close to home but facts are facts - the SEC IS better than the B1G or any other conference right now.

I think if someone is just reporting it here its fine.  It becomes "sour grapes" as you say, when the subsequent pile-on happens.  Its funny I'm wearing an auburn sweatshirt this morning.  I use it when I'm doing dirty work around the house and in the garden.

And when we play as a team, when the old season is over, you and I know it’s going to be Michigan again. Michigan!

Nobody disputes that the SEC has the best football teams. The issue is how and why. The SEC has used terrible academic standards, over-signing, and often shady recruiting tactics to great effect. This, too, is indisputable.

Auburn is a dirty program. I just wish the NCAA would actually bring a shovel with them when they investigate this BS.

I'm sure this was all cash handshakes from a loosely affiliated booster, so there's no trail, but don't kid yourself into thinking this counselor just wanted the kid to get into college. Rumor got around that a kid Auburn wanted wasn't gonna qualify, and some palms got greased.
