OT: Auburn dismisses DC, "eyes" Muschamp

Submitted by Bodogblog on

Auburn has dismissed their DC Ellis Johnson after getting ka-chunged by Alabama and finishing 10th in the SEC in scoring defense.  This comes one year after helping them reach the national championship game.

But more importantly, for anyone who thought Muschamp was a a contender for the Michigan DC job, there apparently is mutual interest.  Muscshamp spent 2006 and 2007 as the Auburn DC.

I just don't see what's to be gained by giving him another year. Keep Nussmeier and Mattison if you want continuity, but Hoke doesn't have the ability or pedigree to be a competent HC.

Who gives a shit if Hoke is fired today, tomorrow, or the next day. There is literally nothing to gain by firing Hoke this weekend.

Except sanity for some of you guys who are freaking out for no reason.

Like I said in the Pelini thread, it's not a fantasy draft or a waiver wire...you don't fire your coach and get in line for the right to hire a coach.

There is literally NO reason Hoke has to go today.

As long as he's gone by mid-December, we're fine.

Nebraska is in a different boat. Their logical candidates could start now. Bohl, Frost and Stitt could all drop what they're doing and head to Lincoln...now.

Michigan doesn't have that luxury. It's top 4 candidates are all still coaching. The Harbaugh's have a regular season to finish and they're both still in the playoff hunt. Mullen and Miles have bowls to coach.

CHILL.

Stop bashing everything just because it's fun. Bash it once we're deep into bowl season and Hoke is still the coach. Freak out THEN.

But right now? You're not going to get anyone you really want, so all you're going to do is create a huge media storm that causes coaches to hold press conferences saying they want nothing to do with you and create panic from recruits from the media attention.

What I find hilarious is the majority of you crying about Hoke still being the coach, would be crying about how the search was botched when we still haven't hired anyone 3-4 weeks from now.

Make up your minds.

But plenty of coordinators have stayed while formally accepting a head coaching job. The point is they can get their man. NOW.

We can't.

Frost could also decide he wants to leave now. Plenty of coordinators have done that right before bowl season as well.

And by now, okay, he's at least got to give 2 weeks so let's be real. The Pac 12 championship game isn't a factor.

....and the possible advantage? How about not potentially pissing off your ideal candidate and forcing him to call a press conference hours before his team takes the field in the SEC Championship game? How about not pissing off the fan base you just tried to appease by shortening the process and not have a vacancy for 5 weeks? How about shortening the timeframe for the few recruits you have to be without a coach? Or the PLAYERS you have to be without a head coach? Maybe they want to give him a chance to talk to him team? Or have end of the year individual meetings with his players? Maybe they have his evaluation set for this week?

I just made all of those up in 45 seconds. All are valid questions.

I could go on and on and on...but there isn't one good reason for Michigan to fire Hoke today other than to make fans happy, today (because they won't be in 5 weeks when the position still hasn't been filled).

You're not getting a head start on anything. We all know the ideal coaching candidates...and none of them are going anywhere right now.

Besides all of them have agents, if they want to come to Michigan, the agents will contact Michigan. If Michigan wants them...we'll contact the agents, even if they're currently working elsewhere.

Just chill. Let's freak out when it's the weekend before Christmas and Hoke is still the coach.

Not that it has anything to do with the situation now, but I remember the feverish anticipation and speculation after RR fired Scott Shafer when the 2008 season was done. Most of us assumed that RR would be busting balls to get the biggest name to replace him right away, and as December dragged on, people were getting more and more frustrated that nothing happened. Then we assumed something would happen right after the bowl games were done in the first week of January, but nothing happened then, either.

Finally, after the winter coaches meeting in mid-January took place, GERG was announced on January 20, a date that will live in infamy.

This, in combination with the other leisurely hirings and firings that have occurred here, is why people tend to be a little twitchy.

I hope you're right, but Hackett has no track record as an AD to indicate whether he's up to the job or not. His background as a CEO with Steelcase doesn't mean he won't be, but it doesn't prove he will, either. The jobs might have some requirements in common, but there's not a total overlap, especially when it comes to his biggest task: making the decision on the football program, and hiring a replacement should the current staff be let go.

To quote an old Russian proverb that the Gipper later used, "Trust, but verify."

Actually, there is.  For once it would be a good PR move, and even though they may have to wait for their A-list candidates, it can't hurt to get ahead of things and interview as many "backup" candidates as you can or start collecting as much info as possible.  They may already be collecting info, but there's no reason to let other schools get the jump on a candidate who would've come to Michigan, but while Michigan was dragging things out and praying for Harbaugh and/or Miles to save them.

Nothing has been done to alleviate anyone's fears about the "same as usual" mentality other than Schlissel not caring what ties the next AD has, but then he lets Hackett head the search and stick around to handle the most important decision an AD at Michigan can make.

So excuse me for disagreeing, but firing Hoke ASAP would do a lot in terms of at least portraying a change in culture/mentality.

He will take Mattison with him.

Pelini will come to  Ann Arbor to be Michigan's HC (3rd one in 8 years). He will retain Nuss.

The rest, as they say, will be history.

just don't fuck around anymore. The SEC is another league, another level. This stuff only happens at programs that know they're a product, don't pretend otherwise and work to better their product by any means necessary. Michigan wants to be that feel good PG sports movie where after years of mediocrity.....BUT LOYAL MEDIOCRITY.....they finally prevail. Truly. It's like Hoke firmly believed that sticking to his unloaded, proven failure guns would suddenly turn UM turbo. The word gimmicks and stubborn hatred of headsets would prove him a wise, patient sage. "Weelll, it took tons of losing...fucking years of losing...but what'd I tell ya?!? You remain loyal long enough, play physical, trust each other and you'll be national champions, boys!" **Hoke snaps out of his daydream due to Mattison asking him if it's ok to blitz more, down 26 to Minnesota before the half, Senior Day 2019**

hoke should be fired  as soon as possible because than everyone knows michigan is getting a new coach. not assuming they are, or guessing they might. it sure wont hurt recruiting at this point, and now the ad can freely begin his search,

Sorry everyone I have a feeling we are gonna wait and the torture will continue. Would it be a surprise, we have experienced all pain possible after watching this season. Why not some more pain!

Hoke is respected at Michigan so I am sure this will be longer than we want.

Amazing, a team actually making moves to win a title. I guess we'll waste a bunch more money on hoke pretending to be coach for a few more weeks. Unreal how out of the loop this program is. You have to move now. It's all on the table, go after JH now. He's already done at SF and it's no secret, he's being rumored to be shipped off to the raiders or jets. If he says no go after Miles and take it from there but at least offer these coaches. Both have never been offered and that's a fact.

The Auburn and A&M jobs fit Muschamp perfectly.   Both those teams have current HCs who want to fix the defense, can hire him immediately and he is a southern dude.   We have a guy yet to be fired and then an open position for a month so this type of coordinator wont be available to us as he wont sit on the open market til January.   It will be a great hire for whomever - he ran great defenses both prior to UF and even at UF.  Offenses were the issue.

It also craps on the "be patient" crowd that is so patient with average results.  Down there you upgrade if there is an upgrade available - you dont sit with decent results if you can improve on it.  Auburn doesnt have a terrible defense by any means (A&M does) - but there is a guy who can make them better so its cutthroat - not the buddy buddy system up here.

Everything that has gone wrong during his tenure at UF has been Urban Meyer's fault, according to Will.  He can't own up to his inability to get the job done, and tries to point fingers elsewhere.

And yet we sit around with our thumbs up our asses, waiting to properly evaluate Hoke, because it's allegedly the "right thing to do."

Hoke should've been gone the moment he got off the bus in AA on Saturday night.

I understand that you're not going to be able to hire a good coach now anyway since good coaches are still coaching, but seriously, what is there to really evaluate?
