OT: Athletes you dislike...?
Given the general grumpiness about Tebow, Izzo, Duke, and any of the other punching bags around this here website, I figured I'd start a thread about athletes you genuinely dislike. You know, the guys you just cant root for...not matter what!
As far as criteria are concerned, have fun ... you don't need to have a reason, and the hatred can be of team, player, or anything about them. All I care about is who really makes your blood boil.
I'll start the thread off with some of my picks:
NBA: Rajon Rondo
NFL: Terrelle Owens
MLB: A.J. Pierzynski
NCAA F: Terelle Pryor
NCAA B: Luke Harangody
Now, I'll sit back in my canoe and let this thread steer itself...
I'm not going to hate a player because they play for a team I don't like, or I don't particularly care for their media image, or because they occasionally whine or do classless things sometimes.
I don't know of Lugo, but he qualifies as an athlete I would hate. Good athletes (or "good" athletes) that can be looked up to, that constantly do really asinine things are NOT what this country needs...
On the other hand, Charles Woodson, who not only is a great athlete, but also donates money to Mott's and is generally a classy guy (and graduated from a great place ;-)) is a good example of an athlete I DO like.
Julio Lugo on the Red Sox was one of the most ridiculous things I've ever had to watch. How a team featuring him as a starting SS won a World Series is beyond me.
Kobe Bryant is the most annoying human being on this earth.
Eli Manning - Goofy hick who is completely overrated. Gets a pass for his name and that he threw up a prayer that was answered. The defense won that Super Bowl.
Don Freaking Mattingly. Most overrated first basemen ever
If I have to see that picture of him eating that kids popcorn, I think I might puke my guts out.
Give me Dave Bergmann any day at first base.
you know who i can't stand?
Alan Henderson
cutters
calbert cheaney
Steve Alford
Damon Bailey
Creame
Jimmy Chitwood
Crimson
candy(ass) striped pants

John Cougar Mellencamp
Myles Brand
Joe Buck
Kevin Kline

Dick Enberg
Dane Fife
Crest Toothpaste

Sage Steele? What are you blind? How dare you rip on one of my cute journalism school classmates from the early 1990s. This could mean war
Also: NOBODY GETS AWAY WITH HATING THE BARD OF INDIANA AND GETS AWAY WITH IT!!!!!!
Double Also: Calbert Chaeney, Alan Henderson were 5-1 vs michigan together, 3-1 vs the alleged awesome Fab Five.

cory tropp
andrew conboy
drew stanton
david boston
Boren
eh pro sports don't give me the red ass much anymore. PROTIP: don't watch sports center or espn for that matter
The post said athletes, not criminals and fat guys.
Here are mine:
NFL: Bert Favre. Living in Minnesota, watching the local fans fall over themselves to love this guy is just ridiculous given the past 17 years.
NHL: Claude LeMieux for the obvious Draper and turtling reasons.
MLB: A-Roid.
College Football: The Florida football program for their treatment of Demar Dorsey after he decided to take visit to Tallahassee.
Soccer: Cristiano Ronaldo. A great player, but a preening ballhog. Lionel Messi is far superior.
NBA: Kobe, Rasheed Wallace, and Bill Wennington.
Oh, and golf: Tiger Woods. I'm sorry, but claiming you're overcoming adversity that you yourself created is kind of like complaining when you wake up in a puddle of your own sick after a night at the pub. Shut up, clean it up, and get on with it. And anyone who cheats on his wife with over 20 women, allegedly, is a POS, full stop.
Cristiano Ronaldo, and I'll add Wayne Rooney to my list too. In fact, the entire Manchester United club would probably be on my list.
I love Tiger, but on a strictly professional level. He is a great golfer and has created so much excitement in the sport. On a personal level, I'm glad to see him overcoming adversity, but he really screwed up...kind of hard to defend him on that one. I wish him luck though...I wish his family more luck, they didn't deserve this.
If he truly cared about his family above golf and his advertisers, he wouldn't have consented to that godawful Nike commercial.
Seriously, Earl Woods's voice? The man who cheated on his first wife with Tiger's mom, and then was legendary for cheating on Tiger's mom, is asking if Tiger has "learned" something?
Also, Tiger saying earlier this week that he hopes he proves he is a good "investment" to his sponsors, really tells you all you need to know about that guy.
off the top of my head...
Carlos Quentin
sidney crosby
steve ott
eli manning
Lebron
johnny damon (I may have to omit him if he produces this year)
drew stanton
david ortiz
evgeni malkin
chris pronger
Sidney Crosby
Barry Bonds
LeBron
Carlos Quentin
Peyton Manning
Terrell Owens
Baby Boren (reading the line "erosion of family values" causes me to put another pin in Justin Boren voodoo doll)
Alex Rodriguez
Jason Giambi
Urban Creyer
Mark Dantonio
Rey Maualuga
Mark Sanchez
Plaxico Burress
Shawne "Roid Rage" Merriman
Michael Jordan
Kobe Bryant
Gary Sheffield
Ladanian Tomlinson
Anthony Gonzalez (that catch from 05 still burns)
Kellen Winslow
Brett Farve
Baby Boren - I hate that hypocritical little shit so much, I've pretty much forgotten about all the other Buckeyes I hate.
Malcolm Jenkins - that arm branding is disgusting
Brian Hoyer (even though I'm a Pats fan)
Zinedine Zidane
Honorable Mention: Morgan Trent - yes, he is a former Michigan player, but he's dead to me after his comments saying that he "know[s] what kind of rules were broken." Great. Thanks for validating the unethical witch hunt that the NCAA stupidly decided to honor, you backstabbing prick.
NHL: Claude Lemieux, Sean Avery, Sidney Crosby, Matt Cooke.
NFL: Eli Manning, Phillip Rivers
NBA: Allen Iverson
NCAA Football: Pryor, Tebow, Dantonio (coach but still)
PGA Tour: Sergio Garcia for spitting in the cup before his playing partner putted out. Although, I think he deserves a major championship sometime in the future.
1) Sam "Mayday" Malone. I once saw him give up 4 consecutive home runs.
2) Norm Henderson. Apparently worse than Pete Rose. The agony of defeat...
3) Bob Uecker. Mr Belvedere sucked as a butler and should have been fired. Write that in your goddamn diary.
Jackie Moon. Freakin' showboat.
...is a long list, but to keep it simple I'll just say Tiger Woods. And not because he nailed a ton of whores, I could care less about what he does in his personal life. It's because, to me, he is the Notre Dame/Duke/Yankees/Lakers/Cowboys etc. of golf.
Not really. I don't live and die by Tiger, but he's one of the great competitors of our time. It's too bad that the media circus is turning him into a tabloid headline.
And yes, I blame the media and the American public for this. What he did was wrong, but it was never our business.
Matthew Barnaby
Brooks Orpik
Darcy Tucker
Jarko Ruutu
Darius Kasparaitis
Claude Lemieux
Matt Cooke
Patrick Kane
I've softened on Crosby just because he's got the hardware
Patrick Roy is his own galaxy of ass
Also Doc Emrick sucks
should almost have a loathing thread dedicated solely to himself - total dirtbag.
I watch plenty of sports in general, but I think I have about five times as many players that I dislike in the NHL compared to all other sports combined. Just from players still playing:
Chris Pronger
Sidney Crosby
Scott Niedermeyer
Chris Simon
Jonas Hiller
Evgeni Malkin
Marc Andre Fleury
I could keep going on if I added more retired players and personalities....
I don't like Bill Romanowski because he was dirty and crazy.
I don't like Kobe becaue he bothers me, and he probably raped a woman in the butt.
I don't like Ben Roethlisberger because it seems like he probably did something similar.
Guys like JJ Redick or A-Rod irritate me, but nothing on the above level.
i e-gree. rapping butts is cause for dislike.
Sean Avery
john rocker
But I've always wanted to see Joel Quenville hit with a snowball full of piss.
* If you're at least late '20s, you might remember whiny Scott Frost after the bowl games of the '97 season. As well, one of his teammates, Grant Wistrom, always struck me as a smug bastard who was completely convinced of Big Red's superiority.
* If you're even older, Steve Wojo-something-or-other of Duke (basketball). The little @#$% didn't belong in D-1 basketball, but through "grit" and favorable officiating (that ignored his numerous hand checks and flops) he managed to thrive.
* Whichever jacka$$ lineman played along with Danny "Hillbilly" Hope's nonsense after the Purdue game last year.
Chad Ochocinco
Terrell Owens
Dennis Rodman
Thornton for MSU, and of course Chris Kramer. Thornton is just REALLY annoying, and Kramer, well, we all know why there.
Players: Patrick Roy, Pronger, Cindy, Malkin, Kane, Boren (if you can say he's an athlete), any Red Sox player besides Pedroia, Gerald Laird.
Other: Matt Millen, Marty Morhinweg, Randy Smith
Mssrs. Bryant and Favre, for reasons previously stated.
Jared Allen
Diego Maradona
Paul Pierce because.. I just fucking hate him.
Andersen Varejao.
Obi Ezeh during football games in 2009.
is a good call. Between him, Ginobili and Forsberg should have a flopping contest. I wonder who would win.
and they will still tremble in the shadow of what Paulus taking a charge looks like.
Rudy.
Basketball:
Doc Rivers - I'm beginning to suspect he's not a real doctor...
Kobe Bryant - “Hate me because I'm a champion." No Kobe, we hate you because you're a rapist.
Mark Blount - Laziest player I've ever seen.
Antoine Wright - How he and Brewer stick in the NBA without any real talent is beyond me.
Corey Brewer - I won a championship in college, but lack any real skill that will translate to the NBA. DRAFT ME!!!
Monta Ellis - I used to like him, but my god he sucks now. Try scoring without taking a million shots pls.
Baseball:
Roger "OH MY GAWD HE'S IN THE OWNER'S BOX!!!!" Clemens
Alex Rodriguez - How anyone can not hate him is beyond me.
Joba Chamberlain - Worthless pile of shit.
Julio Lugo - Beats his wife.
Johnny Damon - "I would never play for the Yankees"
Jason Varitek post 2007 - Now I know what it'd look like to play baseball under water.
Football:
Peyton and Eli Manning - What a terrible family.
David Tyree - I hope the devil possesses you again.
Terrelle Pryor - Everyone kills people.
NCAAF: Anybody on Ohio State, Michigan State, Notre Dame
NFL: Peyton Manning
NCAAB: Anybody on Ohio State, Michigan State, Notre Dame, Duke
NBA: Derek Fisher
Tim Tebow, are you a better person for it?
Athletes I hate: that wrastler guy who everybody is sposed to hate. old what's his name. Is he even still alive?
Athletes I hate: that wrastler guy who everybody is sposed to hate. old what's his name. Is he even still alive?
John Cena? Yes he is.
(Batista wuz robbed, man.)
Drew Henson. Overated from the get go. If only he was as good as his daddy thought. Then he goes to the Yankees organization and embarrasses all Michigan fans, with his putrid performances in Columbus.
EDIT: I think Drew may have been more sucky at baseball than Michael (below the Mendoza Line) Jordan.
Kevin Youkilis.
Nick Swisher. First he was a giant douche on OSU baseball. Then he was a turd sandwich on the White Sox. Now he's an even bigger douche on the Yankees. Frosted tips, puka shell necklaces, and being from Ohio. Pretty much the big 3 of FAIL.
Rondo all the way - not so much because of what he does on or off the court (he sounds kind of weird but ultimately harmless), but the fact that everyone talks about him as an elite PG even though he (a) plays with 2.5 great players, (b) is only asked to distribute the ball and play defense, and (c) cannot score or really take a game over for any significant stretch. Put him on a mediocre team and I fully expect his stats to look rather pedestrian. When it was floated out that he might come to Detroit as part of a trade, I thought it would have been a horrible idea.
Here's the problem:
A. The 2.5 good players he plays with aren't so great anymore. Most people who watch the Celtics recognize that Rondo is 1a at this point in terms of the team's best player. Rondo has historically performed BETTER when one or more of the "Big 3" isn't playing.
B. In 2008 Rondo was only asked to distribute and play defense. In 2010 he's done a whole lot more. He scores 14 PPG, is right at league average in terms of points per minute. Yes, his jump shooting is a problem, but the guy shoots over 50% from the field and manages to score at an average rate.
C. See last year's playoffs. He's consistently shown that when given the opportunity to score/take over, he can and will. Fortunately the Celtics also have Paul Pierce, who tends to be the go to guy in those situations.
Rondo is advanced stats gold. His oRtg (points created per 100 possessions) is through the roof, which when combined with a high usage rate (how many possessions a player uses) results in a HUGE net offensive positive. He's not Chris Paul on the offensive end, but he's damned good, and much better than he gets credit for.
As a Celtics fan, thank god that Pistons trade never happened. Rondo would be far and away the Pistons' best player at this point. Rodney Stuckey is one of the worst scorers in the NBA, the guy takes way, way too many jumpshots for someone who doesn't have three point range. There's a reason the mid to long range two point shot has seen a decline in the NBA, it's the most inefficient shot a player can take. VERY few guys survive on a mid range game without being quality three point shooters as well. Unfortunately for Pistons' fans, Stuckey hasn't figured that out yet.
Tiger Woods. (even though I don't consider him an athlete)
LeBron James and most of the NBA.
Anyone who ever played for OSU, ND, or MSU.
The WNBA.
Reggie Bush.
Milton Bradley.
Ozzie Guillen.
Stephan Marbury.
Allen Iverson.
and the list goes on....
Stephon Marbury and Allen Iverson over...Reggie Miller? Really? I at least appreciate Stephon's deal with Steve & Barry's to send the message to kids that you don't need to spend $200 on a pair of kicks. Iverson had a really rough upbringing, and despite some later legal battles, he definitely rebounded his life.
He never returned my Mom's phone calls and missed every one of my birthday's.
who I dislike more; Clubber Lang,Shooter McGavin or Judge Smails.
....
I really loved Mickey, so I'm going to have to go with Clubber.
