OT- article on Demar Dorsey at GRCC
Thought this was worthy of a share: A GR Press article on Demar Dorsey at GRCC.

I think your failure to appreciate the metaphorical usage of language, and that language is always evolving, is perhaps indicative of your own lack of intellectual evolution. If it makes you feel good to stand there with your dictionary in hand and cry "But...but...but that's not what this book says!!!", then have at it. But in doing so you are rejecting some of the most fundamental aspects of language.
Annese has a way with kids who need a little extra motivation. He did it at Montrose, then Muskegon, and now GRCC. He's a tough coach and pulls no punches. I hope Demar buys into what Annese is selling and becomes an enormous success in football and beyond.
Where are his dreads?!?!?
I know Demar's 4.25 forty time is probably 5 FAKES out of 5, but I wonder who would win in a race between him and his cousin Denard? A 10.3 100m is pretty damn fast.

it seems like this will be a great situation for him. We all love the stories of guys who turn their lives around (in a positive way, cf. Braylon), and I really hope he becomes one of them. So far so good.
And I notice their uniform colors...
I really wish DD all the best as he attempts to get himself straightened out. I would also like to hold out hope--admittedly an exceptionally slim hope--that his path could lead him back to U-M as a game-changing DB. It would be a really interesting test case with the Hoke/Brandon regime as to how they'd respond if he was eligible and wanted to come.
I think the test with the Freep coverage would be even more interesting...
Michigan traditionally does not accept JUCO transfers, as there are pretty significant issues with the way in which their credits transfer (or, rather, do not transfer) to Michigan. Thus, it's not reasonable to assume, or even hope, that GRCC (or any other CC) would be a "pipeline" of any kind to Michigan. We just don't take those players.
"The Michigan Association of Collegiate Registrars and Admissions Officers (MACRAO) Articulation Agreement was established to improve transfer student articulation between two-year and four-year colleges and universities in Michigan. Grand Rapids Community College is a participant in this MACRAO Agreement."
University of Michigan says: "If you are following the MACRAO agreement, your coursework should satisfy most of the distribution requirements of the college. The University of Michigan will accept coursework that was completed for a grade of C or better in areas of study available at the Ann Arbor campus."
Therefore: Demar Dorsey could very well transfer his credits from GRCC to U of M.
It seems like a gentleman from Florida who is attending a community college over 1000 miles away from home may have actually thought about that fact already.

You make a great point but the whole picture of the situation is probably a little different. Michigan accepts hundreds, if not thousands, of transfer students every year and the bulk of them come from places like GRCC. Their coursework usually (assuming they are taking college level classes) transfers over without a hitch.
The difficulty with someone in Demar's situation (and the reason the coaching staff hasn't historically recruited many JUCO athletes) is that he possibly isn't ready to be taking college level classes (especially in English and Math) at the moment. If he's not and is forced to take remedial classes in these subjects (classes that provide credit when it comes to playing eligibility for the JUCO but not for transfer to UM), then he'd essentially have to take 18+ units just to make minimal academic progress and catch up in the other subject areas where he is skill deficient (and he'd still have to pass the college level English and Math courses before UM let him in). If he's taking Intro to Film, Study Skills, and remedial English/Math (as a guy I knew did while playing JUCO ball), he'll be able to play in GR but he just won't have any chance of transferring to a legit academic school.
Technically there is zero impediment for Demar to get his academic house in order and transfer to UM (and I'm sure Hoke would take him in a second if he were to do so). He could do that at just about any JUCO in the country. On the other hand, it is likely that he is still behind academically and isn't in a position to complete two years of actual college coursework in two years (which is what he would have to do to get into UM and is something many D1 athletes probably couldn't pull off under the circumstances).
...to PurpleStuff's excellent discussion of the academic challenges that face a JUCO who comes in with significant academic issues, a JUCO who transfers after one year (two years) has three years (two years) of D-1 eligibility remaining. To be academically eligible to compete, a student-athlete's college standing must matach his athletic eligibility.
Therefore, to play with sophomore (junior) eligibility, the student-athlete must have sufficient credits to qualify as a sophomore (junior). This would be difficult if in JUCO the student-athlete took several remedial courses (usually in math and English).
The kid is obviously very fast, but 4.25? The all time NFL combine record for an electronically timed 40 is 4.24. He was probably hand timed at that camp. He can scoot, that's for sure.
Some people automatically take 0.2 or so off a player's time to allow for reaction to the gun. That's probably what's happened in most of the seemingly bogus reported 40 times.
Nice to hear this. We all make mistakes when we are younger, but maybe he is outgrowing his. Go get em, Demar !

There must have been a specific reason he choose GRCC. Otherwise, he would have gone to a CC that offers athletic scholorships. GRCC does not. Good place for him though, I know Annese spends a lot of time teaching kids on subjects that have nothing to do with football but how to become men.
...follows up the Grand Rapids Press Demar Dorsey article with this piece.
"Man, Coach Annese pushes me hard," Dorsey said. "I've never had a coach be on me so hard. He's helping me out more as a man off the field and football wise too. He's a great aspect of this right now."
"Right now the school situation is going great. I'm ready to get school started and get into this book work. The football team and the talent here is great. It's great to be on this team, but I'm looking more school wise."
"I haven't talked to any schools. Schools have been trying to contact me, but I'm not talking to anyone right now. I'm just looking to get my grades and play here. I'm focused on Grand Rapids right now, not the next school."
It is hard to not think about recruiting when one of your teammates is constantly in your ear though, and that's the situation with Corey Smith, a Tennessee verbal who says he is trying to recruit Dorsey to Knoxville with him.
"Corey's my little brother right now, so we're out here trying to do our thing on the field this year and hopefully we'll be together in D1. Well, not hopefully, we will be togther in D1."
I take that last bit literally as "together in D1" not "together in the same D1 program".
