OT: Artery Clogging Fair Food

Submitted by Blazefire on

So this is extremely OT, but one of my favorite preludes to football season in the midwest is fair season. I always hit the Monroe County Fair for two reasons. The tractor pull and the Hot Wisconsin Cheese. They may be way overpriced, but I'll gladly pay it.

An evening of full pulls, dollar root beers from Bayou Billy and cheddar nuggets always leaves me with an expectant feeling for fall. I know many of us here have midwestern roots, whether we still live in the area or not. What fair food or activity will get you primed for the fall?

To save anyone else the trouble-

A Garbage Plate is a combination of one selection of cheeseburger, hamburger, red hots, white hots, Italian sausage, chicken tender, fish (haddock), fried ham, grilled cheese, or eggs; and two sides of either home fries, French fries, baked beans, or macaroni salad. On top of that are the options of mustard and onions, and Nick's proprietary hot sauce, a sauce with spices and slowly simmered ground beef. It's served with rolls or Italian toast on the side

Sounds disgusting and delicious all at once.

That looks incredibly delicious.  As a person with Greek ancestry, I have never understood what culinary transformation happens to a Greek cook when they move to the US and start a diner.  Their traditional food is so much different, and yet they have perfected the greasy spoon menu.  I'm not complaining, just enjoying the results.

That picture made me drool everywhere. It's not a "Greek restaurant" though he may be Greek. One of the major appeals of the place is the atmosphere. It's a small, dingy place with real characters behind the counter. It's like the soup Nazi. You need to know exactly what you want, have cash, and be quick about it. The first time I went I got kicked out because I asked a question. While other restaurants are good, if you make it out to Rochester, go to Tahou's. It's the original garbage plate, and though some may disagree, I think they have some of the best meat hot sauce of anywhere (yes, it's just ground beef with spices in it. Exactly what a burger needs: more meat.) And yes, it is disgusting and delicious all in one.

Was with most ethnic immigrants if they go into the restaurant business they make food from their country. While there are certainly Greek restaurants there's a huge contingency of restaurants started by Greeks that serve food hardly considered particularly Greek, like this. The whole coney island craze in Detroit is pretty much Greek started. But there are lots of food suggestions I haven't tried, but few that I've wanted to eat as much as this.

If you do try it, don't make the mistake of eating each part separately. You can have home fries and mac salad anywhere. What you have to do is cut up the burgers (or whatever) and mix it into a giant unrecognizable mess. The combination is what makes it so good IMO. Oh, and don't forget to soak up all the excess grease with the bread they give you after you finish the garbage plate.

So, for me, staying inside in the cool AC while I continue reading the "Game of Thrones" series of books and watching "Falling Skies" works just fine for me.

Every year I look forward to my cheese on a stick at the Shiawassee County Fair. A cheese on a stick, some fair fries, and a $6 lemonade make a great meal. Then its time for an apple cider slush for desert.
