OT: Arnold Classic, Columbus Ohio

Submitted by Eskimoan on
Alright guys, have a question. My fiance and I are heading to C-Bus for the Arnold Classic this weekend and Im not too familiar with the area, so my question is mainly a concern. I have some UofM stuff on my ride and I am concerned that it might be vandalized. I have heard that different areas of Columbus are worse than others in terms of having to worry about this sort of issue. The event is at the Greater Columbus Convention Center and Im not sure if that is a area that i have to worry about. Im debating on driving my Fiance's car which is significally worse on gas than mine and we are driving from Louisville, KY just to avoid D-bag Buckeyes form jacking up my car. Im sure there will be Buckeyes from all over the state but regardless, should I worry? Tips ? Advice ?

I unfortunately have lots of family of Ohio, a couple are in Columbus.

If you were going there in the 90s, you would likely have an issue.  We were mushroom stamping them just about every year and that catalyzed a lot of animoisty.  Also, Columbus was generally a shithole back then.

Now, they really don't get worked up over us anymore.  The only real feeling they have over us is pity, which doesn't really translate to vandalism or fighting.  You could probably instigate stuff, and likely only get laughs from the OSU faithful.  Columbus is still kinda of shithole IMO, but much better than it was in the 90s.

Don't be rude or disrespectful and you won't have any problems. That's a lot of why things happen. I wear my Michigan gear in Columbus all the time, especially when I spend time with my in-laws. I've occasionally bantered but the usual question is why I'm a Michigan fan. Once I tell them, they usually back off of being disrespectful. Besides, the Arnold is a huge event. Most of the people in the area will be focused on things other than a football rivalry.

You have about the same chance of something happening to your car in Columbus as you have of someone breaking into your car and taking your coat (which had your house keys in it) and your IPad in Ann Arbor - which is very slim. Unfortunately, this stuff happens every where. I know what happened to me in Ann Arbor was an isolated incident and is in no way representative of the city as a whole. I know it is fun to say how horrible the 614 is and how we are all degenerates but I have lived in Columbus my entire life and it is one of the nicest, friendliest cities in the Midwest. Don't look for trouble and you won't find any.

Also - the Convention Center is in a nice, up and coming area and is within walking distance to tons of bars and good restaurants. I would check out this out before going - http://www.shortnorth.org/dining

...I wouldn't worry ab wearing Mich gear but parking in a lot downtown with a bunch of meatheads, you are rolling the dice. Slim chance anything happens but is it worth the risk?

I will be there. It's an awesome show. I am going to coach a few of my students in one of the competitions. I leave tomorrow. Will be back late Saturday.

Honestly, I'll wear my mich stuff. You don't have to worry about vandals around the convention center. Park inside a parking garage, there's one by the back entrance to the center by a super market. But if you going to get a spot, arrive around 730ish. Otherwise it will be full, all day. Parking is usually like $10.

I'll be able to get in about an hr before the public because I am 'helping' an event.

FREE STUFF! We'll for sure see a few celebs...Lou Ferigno, Sly Stallone, Arnold, maybe a few NFLers. Saw Ray Lewis a few years back...

It's an awesome event, go every year, recommend it to everyone.

Theres only two drawbacks...
1) it's located in Americans armpit
2) sometimes it's tough to decipher the men from the woman at the show...some look like freaks of nature and you can only imagine how much they spend on roids.

is that they are in fact people.  What you give is largely what you get.  For example, I sat in the Spartan student section this year decked out in maize and blue, and had a blast, because I was friendly to those around me and they were friendly back.  Sat next to a Buckeye later that year at the Game, same story.

Yeah, there are some wackos who break this rule.  If you run into one, that's just bad luck on your part.

Moved here 2 weeks after 1991 graduation and no one has ever messed with my car which has always had a Michigan Alumni plate holder or a personalized plate that said UOFM 91 or both.  Of course i didn't hang around campus back in the 90's and still don't today.  If your fiancee's car is 4WD take it - they are predicting snow all weekend and they clear roads around here like an anorexic clears a plate.

Enjoy the Short North in the evenings after the show.  Your ride should be fine.

I was only in CBus once...in 1986 when I was a kid.  Its a total piece of shit town with some of the worst looking characters you will ever see.  Get out of there as soon as you can after the Arnold Classic.

We came to Columbus today but to Seinfeld tonight at the Ohio Theatre. When we checked in we were surrounded by people on steroids with fake tans. ;) t
This thread now explains what's up. For that, I thank you.
