OT: Anybody remember Donovan Tate?

Submitted by MichFan1997 on

For those who don't remember him, I found this interesting. He was a 4 star safety from 2009 that Michigan was once recruiting. He then committed to UNC for baseball and football, but signed on with the Padres after being taken 3rd overall in the 2009 MLB Draft. He was just suspended for 50 games for testing positive for a banned substance for the second time. Buster Olney says Tate's career is in jeopardy now.

He was billed as a toolsy outfielder with a ton of upside, but he was striking out at an obscene rate and couldn't stay healthy.

when he struck out 41 times in 107 plate appearances.  Not sure how much to read into this year's stats since it was such a small sample.

Sounds like the suspension was for pot though, so I doubt this will be a big deal in the long run.  I'm hoping he works out; it was nice to see the Padres actually go over-slot and draft for upside for once.

when we spend a few months learning about someone, excited at the potential of them wearing the Winged helmet. Then they go somewhere else and we forget about them forever. I just think it's interesting to see the "what ever happened to" stories. For instance, in 2 years if someone says "hey, remember Tony Grimes?" or "remember when we almost got Wayne Morgan?"

Do I really care..no, but am I still inexplicably curious about players with any sort of past link to Michigan...yes. Beauty of the Internet, someone else does all the leg work for you.
