I remember most players from this time period, but genuinely have no recollection of him.

Think left-handed bull.

Angry, left-pawed bulldog made entirely of bricks.

RIP Mase. That was a fun (yet frustrating) team to watch. I moved to NY in '94 and have been a Knicks fan ever since. I wasn't disappointed when he was traded for LJ, but had hoped to see him back in a Knicks jersey at some point. Always liked him.
48 is way too young.

One-handed free throws and cool haircuts. As a youngster in the 90's, I was intrigued by those things. I'll never forget him. He was also muscular as hell. Hopefully it wasn't steroids that messed him up.

He was a tuff SOB. This makes me scared and feel real old.

...I loved watching those guys. RIP. First Jerome Kersey at 52, now Mason at 48...what the hell is going on?

Those Knick teams vs Bad Boy Pistons series were as physical as any basketball before or since.

I keep my haircut correct like Anthony Mason...

"I got my hair cut correct like Anthony Mason."
Good reference. Well done. I wish I had a shout out on Ill Communication.

Both my parents are older than that. Puts things in perspective.

I'm older than that! Perspective indeed.

Sad loss. Those Knicks teams weren't pretty, but with Mason and Ewing they always played tough inside.
February 28th, 2015 at 2:42 PM ^
And Oakley.
February 28th, 2015 at 2:49 PM ^
And Charles Smith ... they had enough beef and height in the frontcourt for 2 NBA teams.
February 28th, 2015 at 3:26 PM ^
I think you meant Mason, Oakley and Ewing. Charles Smith was a joke and I associate him more as a bad Clippers player (most of them are) and the guy that was a Knick for a sec that couldn't tip the ball in with 3 or 4 chances.
February 28th, 2015 at 3:47 PM ^
Smith averaged about 11 PPG & 5 RPG as a Knick. Mason averaged 10 & 8. Not a huge difference. However, my main point was that they were huge, and built much differently than current NBA teams.
February 28th, 2015 at 5:46 PM ^
...agree on that.

12 chances. He was blocked 12 times by MJ, Pippen, everyone on the Bulls in the final seconds of game 7, 1993 EC finals.
And then he goes to North Korea with Rodman.

though honestly, I've lost interest in the last 10+ years for obvious reasons. I still don't know how they ever won anything but watching a guy like Mase go up against Jordan and the Bulls was such great fun.
Everyone in NY loved Mase and still does. (Charles Smith is another story though.)

backed down from anyone.
He would have made a great Bad Boy. A lot like Rick Mahorn.

and the next day you're gone.... RIP
What a baller.
Anthony Mason is a New York hero. Rest in Peace. He always made us proud.
Oak, Mason, Ewing and Starks never took shit from anybody.
He was actually a really interesting guy too. Here's a great interview in which he talks about hard work and preparation, coaching, the NBA's golden years and best of all DEFENSE.

He even talks about teaching young people, especially athletes, how important it is to think about their future financial security.
I saw the dude on the street in Manhattan one day like six years ago and he was literally the biggest person I've ever seen. Poor guy. RIP Mase.
