The move was made in order to move on. However, some were concerned he will not be able to spend the same amount of time looking for a successor. With that said, Barry is already on the move. Chryst stated he wants to remain at Pittsburgh, so he is somewhat out. Darrell Bevell,  mel tucker, and Al Goldin.

My perspective they are likely to go with a pro person since they run a pro offense.

I personally think that this is f-ing awesome. Imagine for a second that Michigan had a football coach who did a great job for a few years and then bolted right after the team won the B1G and Bo, were he still alive said "Michigan will be coached by a Michigan man" and took To the sideline?

I root for the big ten teams anyway, but this actually makes me root for wisco even more.

I see what you did there...

This is different, however, and to me a bit creepy.  Bo didn't say, 'hey, I am going to coach the basketball team myself.'  This perhaps underscores the reason Bielema wanted to leave: to get out behind Alveraz's shadow.  Alveraz's last recruiting class graduated a few years ago; Bielema has been to three straight Rose Bowls; that fans in Madison are clamoring for Alveraz leads to me believe that Alveraz, and the Madison fan base, is having a hard time letting go.

Then again, who wouldn't want come out of retirement to coach the Grandaddy?!  I understand where Alveraz is coming from.  Plus it lends a cachet to the game that merely promoting a provisional assistant would not.

Probably a good idea. He has experience winning Rose Bowls and playing for him could inspire some players.

It is  predictable move, maybe they don't feel they'll get their guy before the bowl game and are willing to wait and let that coach be with his team thru the bowl game.

Barry Alvarez is apparently open to coaching next season as well, or at the very least he hasn't ruled it out.

I think it a good move short-term. Paul Chryst essentially took half of the coaching staff with him to Pitt last year, so nobody on Wisconsin's current staff really has "seniority" to be named interim HC. Also, a lot of the quality HC candidates out there have already found new positions or decline to leave their current schools, so Alvarez would be hard-pressed to find a solid replacement this late in the game.

was thinking of and I now see he is with Seattle currently not Green Bay but I wouldn't doubt if the delay is due to timing of the Bowls and the NFL season winding down. When during the season did PSU announce O'Brien to be HC?

Coaches being mentioned:

Chryst (the favorite)

Darrell Bevell (maybe the 2nd choice among Badger fans)

Willie Taggert, HC of Western KY, Harbaugh disciple, was in Madison interviewing apparently

Chris Peterson. Because he is mentioned in every coaching search.

Follow the whole saga (including a rumor that Peterson was touring Camp Randell today) over at http://www.buckys5thquarter.com/.

Schadenfreude is essentially getting pleasure out of someone's pain.  So, in this instance, it would be an instance of schadenfreude for us to enjoy seeing Wisconsin fans who are really, really sad to see Bielema go (which doesn't sound like too many).  That's why 'this week in Schadenfreude' that Brian writes is all about fanbases who lose big games -- because it's entertaining to see people so upset.

There are  a few sites  out there that are saying Al Golden and Joe Rudolph would be outside candidates for this position, with Golden possibly only having traction because of Shawn Eichorst and his connection to Wisconsin as a former associate AD. Despite being the popular favorite, Chryst has spent quite a bit of  time in the past 24 hours reaffirming his commitment to Pitt.

As for Alvarez coaching the Rose Bowl, for the Badgers, it might be a nice psychological lift, and for the month of December anyway, a fairly logical move. I agree that Bielema should not coach the bowl game, and this at least gets them to early January. If they go in-house, they'll have  fairly green coordinators to choose from, but Wisconsin sees itself as a desirable position, and I wonder if they'll spend accordingly on an HC and assistants.

I'm struggling to think of an example where a former coach returned to steer the team after almost a decade of "coaching retirement". How about any AD taking HC role so late in a season? If one of the coordinators is not better prepared than a guy absent from all team sessions and game-planning, I'd say Bucky has leadership voids.

Little more odd with Barry appointing himself as AD. Shocked to learn there have actually been over 210 instances in college football history of a coaches returning after some hiatus to coach the same school per Wiki. Most were long ago like Yost.
