OT: Alums May Need To Check EMail Forwarding

Submitted by CRex on

If you are an alum with email forwarding setup, you should double check the forwarding.  The recent MCoummunity upgrade broke a number of the forwards and you may need to set yours up again.

For those of you with no clue what I'm talking about:  When you graduate from the U of M you lose your email account.  However you can set it so all email sent to [email protected] is forwarded on to an email accunt of your choice.

Mods:  I know this off topic, but it likely applies to a large number of people who use these boards.  IT has sent out an internal note on this, but with email forwarding broken it wasn't like those people could be emailed.

Edit:

If you send a test email to [email protected] and don't get the email at the destination account (the account you were forwarding emails to) you'll need to follow these steps.  (http://www.itd.umich.edu/itcsdocs/s4384/).  In some rare cases accounts were totally messed up and you have to email the helpdesk for help, because when they changed from LDAP to Active Directory they lost a bunch of info.

My guess is that if you're an alumi, your username/password are no longer valid, and that includes when Gmail tries to access your account and grab your mail.  The forwarding comes from the UM IT department itself.  Basically you give UM a forwarding address, they send you your mail.  No need for Gmail to do it.

What you tried to do was set GMail to check your UMich account, which won't work since your account is turned off. If you want people to be able to email your UMich account and have it sent on to your GMail account, follow these steps.

Basically right now when someone emails your umich address, the email server just throws the email away. With the steps about it would just automatically forward it on to your Gmail account (like if you forward an email to a coworker). So you can't send emails from your umich account or anything, but you can get stuff sent to your account forwarded to your GMail.

I just tossed in directions at the top of the page since multiple people had issues with this.  Basically you have to rerun these steps: http://www.itd.umich.edu/itcsdocs/s4384/

LDAP is dead and gone and I'm not sure what that means about your Engin account.  You may need to contact CAEN for that one.  We're now on one universal Microsoft Active Directory server now *sticks shotgun in his mouth*

My forwards are working. I checked the engin.umich.edu forwarding option as well. Both addresses are forwarding fine.

For those who get spam through your umich.edu id, check the spam list options in your settings. That helps a little. Plus gmail has an awesome spam filter. So I never see any spam anyway.

What do you do when you need Vi@gRa?  How does the barrister for your long-lost (fllthy rich) terminally-ill relative in England reach you?  And I shudder to think of the opportunities you're missing to work from home, or to be a mystery shopper.

You're living on the edge, man.

And oh hell am I going to get some annoying ads on this site going forward.

I went through the steps, and everything appears to be working properly. For some reason, I still get weekly updates from the African American Students Association, even though I'm not black nor have ever joined the group. Kinda funny.

Thanks for the heads up. My email forwarding seems to be one of the broken ones that is not getting through.

I went through the steps but it still isn't forwarding to my gmail address (redid forwarding). Will have to take a deeper look later in evening.

Is it just me or is that site way worse than the (admittedly rudimentary) old directory.umich.edu site? I'm sure they're working through kinks / upgrades and it will improve, but right now, ugh.

CRex: Awfully nice of you to provide this alert! I checked my set-up and it's fine, but if something had been wrong, I might not have realized it for several days.
