OT: Almost Unbelievable Baseball Prank

Submitted by bballislife22 on

So a couple weeks ago I posted the April Fools prank video with the student pranking her professor at Aquinas College. That can be found here:

Today I found a prank that I think tops it. Jeff Francoeur (former Brave, Royal, etc) was pranked by his Triple A teammates into thinking one of the players on his team was deaf. He thought he was deaf for over a month!!! I almost can't even believe it's true, but I guess it must be. One of the all time great hoaxes for sure, right up next to Sidd Finch. Saw this on reddit earlier. Amazing. I wish they went more into how many interactions Franceour and Jorge had. It sort of left me with the backhanded impression that Franceour he was really aloof in the clubhouse and basically didn't spend time with his teammates, because I don't see otherwise how that could've been pulled off.

No idea how this is awesome.  Especially the part about how they repeatedly call their teammate an idiot over and over.  I was in a fraternity at Michigan and completely appreciate how men can bond over hazing/harshing each other, but such a systematic effort by so many to make one guy look stupid turns the corner to me from fun to pathetic.

The part where they talk about Franceour giving encouragement to the dude with his thumbs up and saying, "Way to go! Nice job!" made me lose it. This is an awesome prank that probably took a lot of strategic planning. Also, the dinner they described - that sounds like it was pretty epic.

"How do you communicate with George?"

"Hand signals"

Wow that is quite a prank.

Funny it happened to Francoeur, as he had some excellent interactions with Oakland A's fans a couple years ago.  They were doing a "Bacon Tuesday" out in the right field bleachers, and when he heard about it he joined in with the fans after the game.  Then the next day, he threw a ball to the guys with a $100 bill wrapped around it, and a note telling them to spend it on bacon and beer.  The next year at the 2nd Bacon Tuesday, the A's were playing the Royals again, and the fans made Francoeur the face of the event.  So he responded by ordering a bunch of pizzas up into the stands for the fans.  Pretty cool stuff for an opposing player!

In my first days in JV football, one of the players speech was a little slurred.  Back in the day, high school started in 10th grade, and so I didn't know the kid from the different junior high he attended. Plus I was talked into joining the team at the beginning of school, so I missed any introductions in August.

My impression of the kid was that he must be a little mentally slow.  Until one day I found out that he was deaf after it became obvious while he was translating to sign language for another deaf student.

I was--pardon the pun--dumbfounded.  For a good ~month, I had no inclination that he could not hear.  My impression of him jumped to amazement on learning he was able to speak functionally without ever hearing a word.

I always appreciate committment to a joke.  This takes it to a whole new level.  Little details like not listening to his headphones on plane rides... for a month!  amazing.

The thing that pushed me over the top was the manager talking about the catcher going to the mound to talk to the guy with his freaking glove over his mouth, and Francouer still didn't notice. The attention to detail, like the commitment not to listen to headphones on the bus or the plane... Just top notch work.

And yet another reason why minor league baseball is the best.
