OT - Alex Legion Dismissed by Isiah Thomas

Submitted by umhero on

Boy we sure dodged a bullet with this kid.

FIU coach Isiah Thomas said Thursday night that wing Alex Legion has been dismissed from the men’s basketball team for a violation of team rules.
That's three teams since he decommited from us.

I usually hate it when people say things like "we dodged a bullet" or "we were better off without him."  It tends to seem like sour grapes, and it heaps ridicule on a kid who is just trying to find a place to go to school, play ball, and get a degree.

In this case I'll make an exception. We dodged a huge bullet with Alex Legion, and the program was better off without him.

i remember how pissed i was when we missed out on him and how awesome  thought a manny/legion due would have been.  but you're 10000% right, not getting him ended up being a huge benefit.

Seems that way, but it seems a bit misguided. Maybe Michigan could have been the place for him to really find his footing. Maybe he should have followed his original feelings.

I had a chance encounter with Legion's mother at Detroit Metro within a month of him having switched his commitment to Kentucky.  I've told the story here a couple of times here already so I'll spare you all from it again.

In short, she made it clear that it was her decision for Alex to go to Michigan and that he wasn't really excited about it.

Unfortunately for Alex, his mom was a cancer to his college career.

when she said that she didn't appreciate the way that Michigan treated Amaker.

Shall we compare Tommy Amaker vs. Tubby Smith?

Amaker:

  • Coach at Michigan from 2001 to 2007
  • Overall record at Michigan of 108-84 (56%)
  • League record of 43-53 (45%)
  • 0 NCAA appearances (although might be an argument that they get in in 2003 if not for self imposed ban
  • Fired in 2007 after 7th place finish in conference and second round exit from NIT

Tubby:

  • Coach at Kentucky from 1997 to 2007
  • Overall record at Kentucky of 263-83 (76%)
  • League record of 120-40 (75%)
  • 10 NCAA appearances (every year that he was th ehead coach)
  • Fired in 2007 after 4th place finish in conference and second round exit from NCAA

Yes Annette.  I completely see where you are coming from.

Just hope that he gets a degree from any college. This is what happens when parents get "Too Involved" into their kids recruitment. I mean, if i had a son/daughter that was being recruited by a major college, i would let he/she take the visit alone and ask them what they thought and then i would join on the second trip. He could have came to MICHIGAN and got a MICHIGAN degree. I wish him luck.

i don't have kids, but i would definitely have some serious input on where he/she goes to college.  i mean, it's a 17 year old kid making the first important decision of their life.  damn straight i'm going to provide some serious guidance.

Has went on with Alex Legion from the time he was at Oak Hill until now it seems as if he is 37 years old by now (22yr Junior). I dont have to know all the details that some things, by nature of transfer didnt go his way. There are many people who have knowledge of what has transpired in Alex's life could probably tell you in detail that they saw this coming.

I feel bad for the kid.  It seems like he's just never been able to get settled and comfortable in one place.  Hopefully he can eventually find the right fit, settle in, and get his degree.

..but if even Isiah Thomas won't take you on his team, there is a big problem somewhere.  I hope Legion manages to find whatever it is he is apparently looking for.

It seems like more than that.

What a loser.  I wonder where this guy went wrong.  Was he bad from the start or did he listen too much to all of the peeps telling him how great he was?

hard to believe that Alex Legion has any elibility left...should have signed with Georgetown...I seem to recall some of their players from the 90's hung around for 6 years or more (or maybe it just seemed that way).

This is Isiah Thomas making the decision, people. I therefore conclude that Alex Legion has turned himself into a mature and upstanding citizen, and his mother a respectful and reserved lady.
