OT: Ale to the Victors

Just to let everyone know, I will be pouring my first glass of "Ale to the Victors" tomorrow evening.  The beer has been in the fermenter for almost 2 months and now it's in my kegerator and should be carbonated tomorrow.  I'll be sure to post Pics and my opinion of the first batch! I can't wait!

I enjoyed the post about trying to find a name for it. Ale to the Victors was definitely the best one. Anyway i hope the beer is great and you enjoy it. Wish i could sip one myself.

Im not sure it is ok to call them that until they prove it. However, back when Ben Wallace was a beast for the Pistons he had NFZ embrodiered on his huge wrist/forearm band. I loved the term back then and got really excited when when i thought Demar was bringin it to the big house.Thought about changing my name and sig but really haven't thought of anything new. Plus i am still attached to the idea that maybe our secondary will become a No Fly Zone!

The Germans have a pretty good "white" beer with the hefeweizen, but there's something about Belgian witbiers (particularly Hoegaarden) that is particularly refreshing on a summer day. I used to travel to Belgium frequently, and had my first one in the early '90s. Even got to tour the brewery and have dinner in their restaurant one time. The only thing that makes me turn my nose up, is when bars serve Hoegaarden with a slice of orange - the Belgians are purists and drink it without the garnish.

Either way, though, I'm not too picky. I'll gladly accept a bottle - or glass - of both. And, I'm frankly shocked at how good Blue Moon is. For a mass produced beer made by Coors, it is absolutely first rate, and I love it with the orange slice.

drink yourself down some Ommegang Witte.  Belgian, delicious, awesome.

This is from the same brewery that puts out the Ommegeddon that was the beer recommendation of the week over at Maize 'N' Brew last week.  The good news?  They give free tastings after a brief but informative tour.  The best news?  They pour liberally.

Also, if you're a fan of wheat beers, I have to echo "Bouje" in advising that you try some of the German ones.  Weihenstephaner is probably my favorite, but Hacker Pschorr, Paulaner, Hofbrau Munich, Franziskaner, etc. are all highly enjoyable.

Those Germans know what the hell they're doing when it comes to hefeweizen.  I've tried a lot of hefeweizens made by American breweries and most don't come close (although Widmer's is a good one ... Shiner's is good too).

It's actually a cream ale. Honestly the sole purpose for me choosing a cream ale was so that I could use actual flaked Maize in the recipe.  I'll try to get a good pic of the first pour.  I plan on doing a couple more batches before the opener vs. UConn.  I will probably be bringing my portable keg system with a couple of 5 gallon kegs full of  "Ale to the Victors". I hope that some of you can stop by the tailgate and try some.  I'll try to make sure I have something to identify the tailgate so everyone can find it.

I look forward to hearing how this batch turns out.  I love the name.  I started brewing recently and let me give you a few words of advice.  Don't be discouraged if the first batch is excellent and the second is worse.  I made a wheat beer for my first batch, which turned out well.  However, my next batch of honey lager was far worse.  Talking to a few other brewers, this seems common.  Apparently, people often get lax with the cleaning after the first batch success.  Then again, maybe I just suck at brewing beer.  Either way, best of luck.
