Perspective: The Tigers are the hottest hitting team left in the LCS's.
OT: ALCS Game 2 Open Thread
Just checked ESPN.com for a few updates and it makes me sad how ESPN went from an objective source of all things American sports 20 years ago to the Exclusive Yankees Red Sox Lakers Heat Cowboys Tiger Woods Network it is today. As always, the pictures and story aren't about the other teams, but about one of the above. In this case every pic is of a Red Sox player, and the stories are about the Red Sox pitchers or if they can rally. Tigers barely mentioned.
And do Skip Bayless and Smith ever talk about anything not related to the Cowboys? So over ESPN.
Eat 'em tigers. Start the game already.
A 2-0 series lead headed back to the D could almost get the sour aftertaste of that football game out of my mind for good. Leggo Max!
Fuckin' a. First pitch isn't until 8:15. Fuck fox.
Oh my gosh, Michael Cuddyer stop talking. My ears, they bleed.
Anyone know of a stream? VIPBOX and frontrow are letting me down!
"Austin Jackson with 20 strikeouts this post-season. He is so sick and tired of announcers talking about how many strikeouts he's had this October".
Why bring it up dumbass?
Better yet, stop striking out.
Did Buchholz just get out of the shower or something? What's with the long, wet looking hair?
A gay pirate
I hate Victorino... Come to mention it, I hate how whiny this team and its fans are.
Big strikeout of Big Poppy for Max
I'm happy with a split at this point on the road, but Boston will be in big trouble if they go down 0-2 and have to face Fister and Verlander in consecutive days.
Fox, y u no give us pitch counts?
It's in the Fox Box in the upper left corner. It's right above the out count and alternates with the pitch speed.
3 straight hits, keep it up guys.
damn, thought that bobble would have cost them that double play.
I'm stuck watching The Walking Dead episodes leading up to the season premier. Any updates are appreciated!
Would like to see Victor behind Miggy in the lineup. The way he's swinging the bat now, that would be true protection. Right now pitchers have no fear of Prince and don't have to throw Miggy a strike.
Eh, I don't think so.
A: You don't make such a monumental change at this point.
B: Victor provides Prince protection and Prince needs it more.
C: Prince is the power threat, still. You want him behind Miguel because he's more likely to provide 2 runs with 1 swing than Victor is. If Victor is there, he might be more likely to get a basehit, but with Miguel in front of him on the basepaths, that's not the bigger threat.
Prince may be a "threat" but in reality, when was the last time he hit a home run? And worried about making a change? Really? If not for the pitching, this team would be at home right now. The lineup certainly isn't doing it and could use a jump start (moving Jackson out of the lead off spot is another move I'd love to see).
If not for the pitching, this team would be at home right now.
Well, obviously. This is playoff baseball. Pitching is about 85% of the equation. If you are frustrated with the hitting, how do you think Sox fans feel? How about Dodgers fans? The Tigers are outhitting all three remaining team, so for in the Championship series, actually.
So, I understand it's frustrating, however moving Prince out of a spot he's been in all year is a drastic change and I don't think he's been bad enough to warrant it. I mean, if AJax isn't going anywhere, then nobody is.
If not for the pitching, this team would be at home right now.
More or less true for every playoff team at any time during the playoffs in any year.
Peralta and Martinez are on an absolute tear right now.
1-0 Tigs going to the 3rd.
In baseball, how often do you hear the saying, "that pitch was too close to take with 2 strikes?" Apparently no one on the Red Sox has because they take close pitches with 2 strikes all the time and are surprised at being called out. Unreal. If you want to try and win, swing the bat! I hope they just keep watching Max strike them out.
Go Jhonny go!
acting out adolescents in Boston; the kids there, who were mostly from very poor families, used to call wealthy Bostonians HarBars. I always think of that when I gaze on a Red Sox crowd. Not to be too judgemental, but they have a distinctly different look from your average Detroit crowd, even if most of the people at a Tiger game these days are pretty well-off, too.
+1 insightful ?
Headed to the 5th, still 1-0 Tigs.
HUGE double play for the pitch count there. Let's go bats!
We have been dealing as a ball club!
I fear you are right. This has been a fascinating pair of games, though.
Agree. This is the inning for some add on runs with Hunter, Miggy, Prince, V-Mart and Jhonny.
He is dealing right now. THANK YOU TORI HUNTER
Let's get some more runs on the board.
Tiger pitching has been amazing. 20+ innings without allowing a run. Holding Boston to 1 hit over 14 innings. I would love to get to Detroit with a 2-0 lead in the series.
something more than asterisks.
EDIT: Yes, sir!
Wooooo!!!!! A BOMB from Miggy!
So they are at last waking up, that's nice to see.
Yes yes yes.
The big hitters coming through in the clutch this inning.
Man, Fielder is slow.
Now we're getting those bats cranking!
I am feeling happy again
I see you Alex!!!! 5-0 Tigers in the 6th!
Walking Dead's over and I have CONTROL now! Wooo HOOO!
Hee hee. Lookin' good tonight.
Curse of the Bambino is back. Yes
Nice of the fan to throw it back on the field. Alex will take the ball for his trophy case.
A beautiful thing.
So a Red Sox fan rips the ball out of the hands of the lady next to him (no idea whether they're together or not) and against her protests, throws the ball back on to the field.
Red Sox fans are giant walking-around douchebags. Empirical fact.
Wow if that was his wife he tore the ball from he may be "hitless" at home for months.
He's going to strike out so much even Jackson will be like "Damn, that's a lot of striking out"
All I see is a sad face in this post. Must be a iOS thing. :(
was hilarious. TomVH has a nice Vine of that on his twitter.
Eat em up!
Finally hitting like the big boppers they are! Avila's bomb was sweet as hell!
Can't believe Farrell didn't lift Bucholz several hitters back. This has been an amazing display by the Tigers.
You are so right. The team takes their cue from the Big Fella.
any damned day. The need to rename themselves the Boston B-Movie Machiavellis.
Melting a away with these tigers kicking the shit out if Boston.
I hear you.
Let's see Scherzer stay sharp after a long, long top half of the inning.
Looks to still be sharp
Maybe not quite as much...
the Tigers are amassing too, no?
we got a run.
I didn't think they'd look this great in Boston, honestly.
Just get out of this now and we are good
Fox needs more musical themes. Keep the NFL theme for the NFL.
That musical theme always reminds me of "Sleigh Ride." "Giddy-up, giddy-up, giddy-up, let's go...."
K K K K K K K K K K K
He is fearless. Striking out ortiz in that situation was huge 5-1 lead or not.
I don't really have anything against David Ortiz per se, I just like watching Red Sox fans watch their little bishie strike out for his fourth time this series to end the threat.
Dammit. anywhere else in that park that's a homerun.
I like healthy Miggy. If he's perking up, suddenly I'm loving our post-season chances a lot more.
Healthy might be a bit of a stretch. Less injured I will always take though.
True. Hell, 50% Miggy is awesome.
This is just filthy
I wanna see one of these guys get tossed for jawing about called strikes.
So does Max come back out for the 8th? If not, who do we turn to? Veras, Smyly or Al Al?
At this point I'd give Porcello a little work. I know they're saving him for really, really long relief, but the guy needs to get on the hill.
imo, he's the last guy i would put in. if he needs work, he can pitch a game that we are losing (which i hope doesn't happen). i would bring scherzer out for the 8th, but he appears done. so it should be smyly and veras in the 8th.
Looks like he's done, unfortunate I would have let him start the inning at least.
I say yes, take him out on the first guy he doesn't retire.
Come on Smyly
This lead is safe, right? RIGHT?
As long as Borges isn't involved.
Seriously throw one of them out
i would have saved him for ortiz if necessary.
i would be much more comfortable with veras facing the 1-3 hitters than Al Al facing 2-3. fingers crossed.
Hold into your asses. AlAl coming in
Hold into? Some weird stuff going on there.
This exact situation is why I would have at least started the inning with Max. Trusting our bullpen is like trusting a college kicker to nail 40 yard field goals.
They've been very good this post season. Boston's been cold this series but they're one of the best offenses in baseball. Give credit where it's due.
Credit, yes. But Max was only at 108 pitches. Unless he said he was tired or he obviously was, Sending him back out seems prudent. He was dealing and will make his next start with full rest. Let him rip. And Ortiz hits a homer.
They weren't cold - our starters have been terrific. Our bullpen hasn't been. Less time with bullpen in the game the better. As you have just seen.
Fuck fuck fuck fuck fuck
Jesus is Big Papi coming up?
here we go now. ortiz up with no lefty available.
i hate being right.
Really hold into your asses now
Get nasty with it.
From holding in too tightly
That was clutch.
Fuck, double fuck.
Shut up man. Your Leyland hate is insufferable.
God damned Joe Buck.
Leyland - this is on you.
Coaches keep fucking us
Damn straight. Except Babcock. All hail Babcock.
Great effort Hunter
You've gotta be kidding me.
Shit, Tori Hunter really sold out on that one.
If he didn't overrun the ball he might not've had to
Hunter was close to getting that
hunter over ran that. could have been caught. he over ran one earlier but still caught it.
I'm seriously gonna puke
I hate sports
Sit down Jesus you're acting like you just won the game
you fucked it up. now you have no bull pen left either.
Phil Coke? I'm going to bed.
He should have gotten a good reliever this offseason. Instead he settles for crappy Benoit.
benoit has had a great year. and he did go get veras who has been solid and added depth. leyland just screwed up this inning by over-managing again.
Which game did he cost them against the A's?
What the hell are you talking about? A's won a 1-0 game where Benoit didn't pitch and then a 6-3 game with all the runs off of Sanchez. Benoit didn't cost them a game in that series.
made the 8-6 game close. but who cares. that's his 3rd blown save all year.
This is so true. Benoit has been good. Vera's was a nice addition. Leyland trying to be all match-up oriented has screwed us. Now our bullpen is depleted and the series could be tied.
You're an absolute moron. He's gotten Cabrera, Jackson, Scherzer, Sanchez, and Fister for practically nothing.
What the fuck is up with your dumbass posting style?
And how much of a dumpster fire was this franchise before he came in? Remember when we set the loss record? I do.
Holy fuck you only show up when the Tigers are losing or have lost momentum. Go crawl back into your hole.
The fact is that the man failed to address the Tigers chief weakness this past offseason. He placed his faith on a rookie and when that failed he attempted to patch with Veras and Benoit. It has blown up in his face in these playoffs.
who was available? hanrahan? the bosox loved that move. papelbon? i would take benoit/veras over him and that salary any day. i suppose we should have never let grilli go right?
Good to see Torii is OK
You pull a guy for failing to get one out, but you leave Benoit in. Fuck you Leyland!
Chill the fuck out.
Just when you didn't think it could get any worse, Phil Coke is warming up in the pen
If Leyland brings him in at any point, I'm going to bed.
/jumps off bridge.
Well there goes their chance to have this series wrapped up!
didn't realize the game was over.
chickens--damn nation. And it all happened while I was off googling pictures of springtime bluebells.
the sound of the belched words of my voice!
Trying to stay calm. Get a run here and lock this shit down quick. The longer it goes the worse it is for us
the sound of the belched words of my voice!
the sound of the belched words of my voice!
Don't throw first pitch fastballs down the center of the plate to David Ortiz
Unless you're Max Scherzer. He can do what he wants.
I love how Leyland gets all this hate, but no blame on Smyly for the walk. No blame on Benoit for serving it up. No blame on the players at all.
Everything Leyland did was pretty much by the book.
The Smyly walk was huge. He had him and lost him. But do you not question the pulling of Scherzer?
Question, sure. Think its a terrible decision? No. Especially since I don't have all the info.
you can always blame players for not executing. but i posted when he brought smyly in that i would save him for ortiz if necessary. he didn't and it backfired. i also would have brought scherzer out for the 8th. only 108 pitches and he was still rolling.
Except for pulling Max. Leyland is on record as saying his starters can go 120 pitches easy. "A walk in the park" is his direct quote on that many pitches. Max is dealing. He's at 107 through 7. Our bullpen is pretty much garbage. I think this is why there is hatred directed at the skipper.
Bullpen wasn't garbage last night.
Also, Fielder, you're kidding me.
Michigan football and Detroit Tigers baseball. I know this game isn't over yet, but I don't have a good feeling. Seeing all these douche-bag fans get excited as almost as bad as seeing Sparty fans happy.
Jees, what a crappy weekend.
A gem from Max pissed away tho..
Snatching defeat from the jaws of victory!
That's my purse, I don't know you!
Great, great episode.
I hate sports. That's all.
Don't get on the plane to Detroit
and say this again:
I HATE SPORTS.
That Grand Slam is their Peralta homer. It's gonna change the complexion of the series.
I hate to agree, but you may be right.
It's a long series. The tigers have shown resiliency the past several times theyve played in the post season.
Boston is the better team. This grand-slam will wake them up and they will now win the next 4 games! Another Tiger's bone headed move! May be next year if we get a good closer.
gimme a break
But that's a series changing loss.
There is a theme developing here, automatically blame coaches for players mistakes.
Do you really think the coaches have no culpability for last night?
Fielder has got to stop that throw. Are you kidding me????
How does Fielder not catch that?
nice effort. worst defensive every day firstbasemen i have ever seen.
How do you miss that? It's not a football, it doesn't have weird as hell corners to bounce off of.
Set up a force or double play!
now this one hurts.
DAMMIT LEYLAND WHY DID YOU LET FIELDER LET THAT BALL GO BY HIM?
fielder strikes again
And he misses that!!?
UM. The Tigers at least have the chance to redeem themselves at home. This loss sucks, but they got three in the D to avenge this crushing loss.
You fat ass
Fielder - come on man!!!
Had to turn off this game! Good year for not having a good closer but it came back to bite them even with the best starting staff in MLB!
Or not...Fielder just blows it
Is Prince drunk?
I wish I were
Fuck balls shit
As much as I like victor Martinez, at least when he's gone Cabrera can move to first and I'll never have to see fielder play first base agaib
i've said all year that victor should be playing 1B but leyland doesn't want to hurt prince's feelings.
That and I think he's deathly afraid of getting Martinez hurt. He seems pretty fragile at this point in his career
he caught him some games. he actually shows some skill at 1B. and he certainly has a better arm.
He only caught 2 games though. Fielder is an awful defensive player but playing V-Mart as your everyday 1B is just asking for an injury.
What a shit show. Fuck sports.
This has been a fun 8th and 9th.
Fuck Borges Fuck Leyland Fuck sports. I'm done.
what a comically awful sports weekend.
Well, this one is over.
What are they doing?!
On the bright side, it will be hard for future sports weekends to feature this many consecutive dong punches.
Epic collapse with the game practically in hand AGAIN. Fuck this shit.
Let's just hope they shake this off. And JV has to come out and shut them down
No way in hell they should've lost that game. Maybe Leyland will learn to leave his starters in the game just like Hoke won't be so conservative. Ha - right!
Yeah, it's all Leyland's fault.
Finally you say something I agree with!
Leyland has a record of stretching out his starters, so the premise of your statement is already false.
The reason we think 108 pitches isn't a lot is because of the very fact that Leyland does let starters get to 120.
We had a 4 run lead and our bullpen has been pretty exceptional the last few games. It was a fine decision. And if Scherzer gave Leyland any indication that he was tiring, it was the correct decision.
These are clearly the best two teams in the AL and you have to tip your cap to Ortiz. There's no guarantee something similar wouldn't have happened if Scherzer came out.
And I'm saying all this as a guy who totally reemed Hoke yesterday to all of my friends.
Eh, whatever. Gonna be a fun, long series. Big Papi did what Big Papi does.
In Verlander I trust.
that knew how to close a team out?
Lol you criticize the Tigers but praise the Lions? Which team has actually been successful the last 50 years??
And they only have four overall. The Lions have four as well and they are a much younger franchise than the Tigers.
The Tigers are the most overrated franchise in Detroit. Four championships in 112 years of play isn't very impressive.
As part joke/ part serious, and correct. Lions closed it out. Did anyone else?
The Lions are experts at choking on apple sauce so it was a bit amusing to see them close out a team while the Tigers and Michigan went pucker, pucker.
Actually, the Tigers have shown a propensity recently for choking. See the two World Series and late season collapses at the end of the 06' and 10' seasons.
But still no one compares to the Lions for mind-blowing defeats.
the tigers have 4 titles (tied for 9th in mlb history); and 11 WS appearances (tied for 6th). ya, that's very overrated.
they are 4th in both of those items for AL teams.
Lets not start a flame war between the two teams. We're all on the same sides with those teams.
The Lions are known for choking, and the poster was just pointing out a little irony for what unfolded today, that's all.
We have a series
Tigers still will win in 5. Luck won't follow Boston to Motown. They are lucky.
Thanks for fucking nothing.
Crap. We could have broken their backs. What a waste of a great pitching effort from Scherzer.
It's times like these that I wonder how truly serene non-sports fans' lives must be. Because my weekend was just utterly fucked in the ass by sports.
watching the PSU game...UGH
i fucking hate everything right now.
between this game and the michigan game last night. wtf.
I hate having to see the happy faces of the biggest douche-bag fanbase in baseball. Fuck Boston.
loves her those boston catchers
Erin just said she was drenched... I chuckled
At least we split on the road. Our starters are still in their heads, and perhaps our best is starting at home on tues. Woulda, shoulda, coulda been 2-0 but it is what it is
Jesus Christ, every single one of you would have taken one win in Boston before this series started, tigers will be fine.
Before we were watching a team set records for scoreless innings and strikeouts and a pitcher still rolling with more left in the tank- yes
Expectations change, you can't lose a game when you're up 4 runs with only 6 outs to go.
This. Split in Boston with Verlander/Lacky and Fister/Peavy? I'm confident. Let's enjoy it.
How they felt after Peralta hit a 3 run homer and VMart hit another.
But congratufuckinglations Boston, you won a home game in a playoff series. Seriously. You're down a game on the cards going back to Detroit.
I recall the Pistons of the "Going to Work" Era blowing game two to the Lakers with a last shot shot by Kobe and still winning the series. Will the Tigers so the same resiliency or will they collapse like a house of cards during a earthquake?
how jacked Comerica would have been with a 2-0 series lead and a Boston team completely screwed in the heads by Tigers starting pitching.
Has learned nothing about his team over a span of 169 games.
Maybe my eyes were playing tricks on me...but I swear I saw Borges in the Tigers dugout in the 8th. He was standing behind Leyland and said something to him. I replayed it and attempted to read his lips. Sure enough...he said, "Benoit"
