OT: Al Renfrew

In honor of our third straight win over Minnesota, and subsequently, our third straight capturing of the Renfrew-Mariucci Trophy, I thought I'd post a link to Al Renfrew's Wikipedia entry. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Renfrew The man did a hell of a lot for Michigan Hockey as both a player and coach, including some deeds even I wasn't aware of. On a sidenote, I always love beating Minnesota due to their claims of "superior hockey" because "we play all homegrown Minnesota talent."

Actually, the whole "we play all homegrown Minnesota talent" rule is no longer hard and fast. That is to say there is the occasional non-Minnesotan on the team. Granted the vast majority of their players are Minnesota natives, but the last time they fielded a Minnesota-only lineup was the 07-08 season. Before that season, the last time they did so was the 99-00 team (which is as far back as collegehockeystats goes). Of course, now that Lofquist left the team, they presently only have one non-Minnesotan on the team- Jacob Cepis, an Ohio native, formerly at BGSU. Consider Phil Kessel (Wisconsin), Thomas Vanek (Austria), the Potulny brothers (North Dakota), Kellen Briggs (Colorado), Danny Irmen (North Dakota), Kris Chucko (British Columbia), to name most of the exceptions in recent years. But I do always enjoy watching the Gophers' "superior hockey" get rubbed in their face, especially when it's to the tune of a 6-0 drubbing.
