OT: ACC Suspends Miami/Duke Officiating Crew

Submitted by Mr. Yost on

Begs the question...why won't the B1G do this? The last two games have been atrocious.

ACC SUSPENDS MIAMI-DUKE OFFICIATING CREW

Of the two-game suspension of the on-field officiating crew as well as the replay official and communicator, the league said in a statement: "The replay official erred in not overturning the ruling on the field that the Miami player had released the ball prior to his knee being down. If called, this would have ended the game." The league cited three other uncalled penalties

Just because Crazy Jim doesn't like the ref's throwing flags when his team commits obvious penalties, ones that are proven upon reply, does not warrant them being suspended. Crazy Jim can jump up and down and wave his little hands and scream all he wants, those ref's ain't mommy. All he does is cry like a spoiled child, it is shameful to watch. Hall of Fame QB Jim Kelly said it best " Jim Harbaugh is a Cry Baby"

Can we just send this clown to Bolivia and be done with it? I have no issues with thoughtful points of view that I happen to disagree with, but in this case, this guy is either not thoughtful or just a troll.

This really should happen more often, especially when replay is involved.  A blantantly obvious call should not be missed by replay.  The replay official should be fired for missing that call.  The rest of the officials were just terrible but you can at least argue some calls can be missed.

There actually is a ton of accountability in the B10.  Every play is evaluated by league officials and the coordinator of officials assigns games based on how well the crews and individual referees do.  You just don't hear about it. B10 refs disappear all the time and its not like they're all getting promoted to the NFL.

If anything, blame Delany for not being transparent, but there is strict accountability. Too many mistakes and you are gone.

Source: i had the chance to talk with several officials at fairly high levels in D1 football.

The Big Ten left the same guy (Jim Augustine), that guy who called the moronic pylon-play TD in the MIchigan game several years ago, in charge of all of their video booth reviews for YEARS even though he shorwed over and over and OVER again that he was an incompetent boob who didn't know the rules of football.  Yet he was the HEAD GUY.

He was a walking (or at least sitting) disaster of a replay official.  You could have replaced him with a coin flip and been right more often.  Yet he was not only kept on, HE WAS IN CHARGE.  He was the head guy.

When your head guy is completely incompetent, how can you possibly hope to have any accountability?

With all due respect, you throw around words like "incompetent" too loosely.  Go watch some high school games if you truly want incompetence.  Then remember that the best, young HS refs are working their way up to NAIA, D3 and so on.

The fact is, officiating a sport is an insanely difficult job.  I'm not forgiving officials.  I do try to look at it objectively as possible.  I've been evaluated and I have evaluated on a much lower level.  It's impossible to be perfect and the guys that get to D1 B10 games have gotten there through merit.

You are kind of letting your fandom show when you bring up one single play as example of a guy's incompetence.  Like I said, EVERY play is evaluated.  If there are better officials, the stats will bare it out and they get more games.  There's also intense interviewing processes.

It's easy for us fans to point to "that one play" that an official got wrong against our team, but we forget and don't know about the hundreds they got right, the situations they avoided, etc etc.  No official is gonna get bagged after 1 or 2 or even 5 miscalls.  But next year when assignments are made, a guy that had 5 games at FG might suddenly have only 3 games at FG and 2 games as the alternate. Schedules are made for an entire year.

I can't speak for how the replay booth has gotten fucked up, I'll admit.  And targeting is currently a shitshow.  I'm not claiming these aren't problems.  But too often fans (and we as a society) demand perfection or else someone needs to be fired and I just think that's an insanely unhealthy outlook on all things.

Yes I agree the B1G officials should have reviewed the last play against MSU, they missed the offsides and allowed the long snapper to get trampled before he could even lift his head...but I doubt the B1G would ever suspend officials like this

Anyone with eyes could see he was down. The game was over. Why can't the ACC just step in and say, "Duke is the winner. Miami is the loser."

It oddly dissatisfying to just say whoops we messed up, but we aren't going to change anything. In an era of replay and camera angles, the league should be able to step in after review and say, "This team won. This team lost. Let the records reflect the true outcome of the game."

I agree, but this would be unique. In this case I would absolutely overturn the game result, but not based on the missed call of the knee being down. It would be based on them picking up a block in the back flag. That is flat out not allowed to be done via review. That flag was required to be applied and the game over. This was also the very last play as time ran out, meaning there was nothing afterwards. There are no floodgates or precedents being set to review any plays after the game. It would strictly apply to the disallowed actions of the referees that occurred as time ran out and directly affected the outcome of the game.

Bad calls by the officials are just as much of a part of the game as bad plays and calls by the teams.  You can't go back and change the outcome of a game just because a bad call happened on the last play of the game.  Because if you're going to do that, then why stop there?  Why not go back to the second quarter and overturn a TD because there was holding or something.

Shit happens.  And shit happening is a glorious part of CFB.

resulted in an untimed down being replayed. A defensive penalty on the final play doesn't end the game, an offensive penalty could have, depending on when it occurred in relation to the time on the clock. Duke would have had to accept any penalty to avoid the result of the play. And that probably would have led to one more play. And we know what happened......so you can't assume Miami wouldn't have scored on that play.

The crew was suspended for failure to do its job on the final play and flag illegal play or a game-ending dead ball situation. Not sure how the conference would respond if Duke challenged the action and petiioned for a victory to be declared.

It doesn't matter when the penalty occured in relation to the time on the clock, since the play ended after time had run out Miami would not have gotten an untimed down.  They will never award the offensive team with an untimed down after a penalty.  If the flag stood and Duke accepted the game would have ended right then.

What's the benefit of suspending them? It doesn't make them better refs or give Duke their victory. Suspensions are to punish intentional acts; training, support, or dismissal are more appropriate for people who are trying but do a bad job.

I assume college refs get rated(as most leagues do) and must have a certain rating to ref conference championships and bowl games. I am sure getting suspended doesn't help their rating.

At some point officiating crews will figure out that they need to put their BEST guy in the replay booth instead of some washed-up or inexperienced guy who can't handle the situation.  Maybe crews getting suspended will convince them to rethink how they currently set things up.  For some reason, officating crews are not putting the right people in the replay booths.

The B1G refs will never be touched. Delaney will never allow it. After all, this is a guy who thought adding Rutgers and Maryland was an amazing idea and would bring quality to the B1G.
