If we want to do anything this weekend, we're going to have to stop throwing grapefruit to Votto, or he's going to drive in about 15 during this series.

Seems simple to me, but a team like the Reds you can't let Votto beat you.

On a side note can someone explain the history of a bunt foul being strike 3? I get that you should be able to make contact bunting every time but when/how did that become strike 3.

Also i feel like 80% of my comments on here are not related to Michigan.

I don't know the history of the bunt rule but it seems like a no brainer. You can't allow someone to bunt foul numerous strike three's waiting inevitably for the pitcher to miss with ball four. It would make the oft tedious game of baseball intolerably slow and boring.

That's exactly what happened in the late 1800's or so. At the time, there were slightly different rules for strikeouts, so guys would bunt foul any pitches they didn't like, and then get one they liked, and off they went. Remember, back then the homerun was a novelty (the dead-ball era, of course), so bunting was a much bigger part of the game.

Then 1920 came around, the ball was changed, and Babe Ruth commenced launching baseballs over skyscrapers, and here we are today.

Makes plenty of sense. Just figured there might be some story about an epic 80 pitch at bat or something that caused the rule change and a quick googling didn't pop anything up.

Personally bunting short of the 9th inning with a runner on 2nd and no outs or a pitcher is useless to me.

Good to see that Legendary Lloyd fucked around until June to find a flaw in Boesch's swing. Imagine if someone had spotted something earlier.

Maybe there actually was something wrong with his swing. He tied it up at 4s for us and Miggy has a fly ball die on the warning track.

Boesch is now 5-8 with a couple RBI and a HR in the last 2 days

Moving Boesch back to the two spot has paid dividends the last couple games.

4 all heading to bottom 7, thanks to a 2 out run scoring single from Boesch

Reds are playing Tigers 2012 ball; score early and then sit and wait for the opposition to catch up

WTF Leyland. Ortega? There? Are you batshit insane? Leave Benoit in, directly to Valverde, Coke, Benoit or Dotel or something...nah JOSE ORTEGA

I thought the same thing, but Dickerson said Benoit is unavailable and both Villareal and Dotel were a bit fatigued, but ya it's still a sketchy move.

I thought he pitched pretty well. The pitch he gave the double up on was pretty good. 97, right on the black on the inside corner. Props to the Reds hitter really. Then he got a ground ball, it was just hit in between short and third. And Leyland has always been fine with throwing guys into the fire for their MLB debuts.

Benoit has been having trouble with his arm, unfortunately, according to the guys over at Blessyouboys. He might even hit the DL. I do think Dotel should've been in that situation instead of Ortega; almost seems as if Leyland likes to baptize AAA relief call-ups by fire (Villareal against the Yanks in a tie game, 9th inning, is one example)

Coke's biggest problem has been his inability to deal with adversity behind him. Last year, as a starter, he would sail along for 3-4 innings at a time, until someone had a misplay behind him, whether it be an error, a missed double play, what have you. Next thing you know, 3 runs were in.

I'm just glad we didn't kick one in the field, as it would have been Game Over in Cincinnati.

Must be an issue with Dotel because Villareal is warming up in the bullpen and it was said before that game that Leyland didn't want to use him tonight

I understand that Rod wants to slurp on Dusty Baker a bit. Fine. But Jesus Christ, Rod, the Angels did not steal the 2002 World Series from the Giants.

Well yeah they need to win some series but the shit just ain't happening right now.

You reference the radio broadcast quite a bit. I don't know how you can listen to those guys, I find it very difficult to listen to more than a couple of minutes, be the Tigers winning or losing. I would much prefer the much criticized duo of Rich Rizz and Bob? Rathbun.

I enjoy Dan Dickerson quite a bit, he's no Ernie, but he explains the game very well and puts a good picture in my head while I'm working, I could do without Jim Price though lol.

As for the tv broadcast I think Mario is good and knows his bounds as a PBP guy, but Rod Allen gets on my nerves. He is generally knowledgable of the game, but my god he's like Jon Gruden, just incapable of saying anything negative and that gets on my nerves. Just call it like it is Rod, no need for sunshine blowing all the time for a team under .500.

I think Dan Dickerson would be much better if didn't limit his scope of the baseball game to Jim Price's unimaginative and dreary take on baseball. Plus Dickerson and Price are overly typical kiss asses. Also I know if I put the game on radio (only happens if I'm driving), within 20 seconds Price and Dickerson will be going on and on and on about the fucking pitch count. Not just the fucking pitch count for the game, how many fucking pitches the pitcher has throw this inning, how many fucking pitches the pitcher has thrown this at bat. There's no fucking end to pitch count mania.

WMUgoblue

Hah I agree on their pitch count rants, but I dont think the kiss ass as much as Rod Allen does. Price and Dickerson point out lots of things, like a ball getting thrown to the wrong base allowing a runner to move into scoring position. You will never hear Rod or Mario say things like that, and Price really grilled Scherzer on Wednesday for grooving so many fastballs over the plate in 0-2 counts. They are much more critical of the team than the TV broadcast is, notice when the Tigers are losing how little Rod says, it turns into Mario just calling the PBP.

I prefer listening to the game on the radio than watching on TV. Baseball is so much more enjoyable on the radio because of the long season. People tend to micro-analyze way too much because so many games are played. Better to just sit back, drink a beer on the porch and listen to them describe it.

I love listening to baseball on the radio; just not the Tiger radio broadcast. Ernie, Jack Buck, Harry Kalas, the Yankee guy, Tom Cheek and Jerry Howarth in Toronto, Marty Brennaman in Cincinnati, Jon Miller and many others. I know some of these guys I mentioned are dead but they're still better than the Detroit radio broadcast.
