And then they actually play, and they punt the ball on third down.

Not only is it a traveling trophy (much better than the 5th grade art project Vince Lombardi trophy), it was donated by the guy who invented Earl Grey tea. That's pretty sweet.

Oh man, I love Earl Grey tea. That wins some points right there. And I'm right with you on the 5th grade art project thing. It's a football with a long handle, and the second somebody touches it, it looks like an iPhone touchscreen.

Earl Grey tea was "invented" by Charles Grey, 2nd Earl Grey. The Grey Cup was donated by his grandson, Albert, the 4th Earl and Governor General of Canada from 1904-1911. Also, the 2nd Earl didn't invent the tea, he merely received it as a gift and introduced it to English society.
Also, the Grey Cup is an effing trophy on top of a block with some plaques. It's not like some artistic achievement.

A single, traveling trophy always trumps an annually-made one. That is sports canon.
I actually like the look of the Lombardi Trophy, but the idea that a franchise can stockpile Lombardis (if it wins often enough) cheapens the whole thing. Ditto for the MLB and NBA trophies. There are now, what, 40 of the things in existence? Seeing one will never be as cool as seeing the Stanley Cup.

Neg bang away, but the CFL is a decent league. And considering I live in Canada I'm going to have to back it up, it is different rules but the players are better then the UFL so why not use it as the brunt of your jokes. Back off my Argos.
November 15th, 2009 at 1:50 PM ^
I'm going to disagree. The majority of CFL players are native Canadians and many played in the CIS. The UFL at least drafted current NFL to for their league.
By the way, not to offend any Canadians here, but the CFL is actually much less popular amongst Canadians (especially those under 40) than the NFL. There was a lot of controversy in Ottawa where a lot of the population wanted an MLS team but the city decided to go after a CFL team instead.
November 15th, 2009 at 7:46 PM ^
Yeh the CFL isn't that popular, but to say that the CFL isn't the second best league I would say is questionable. If you look at all the top players who don't get drafted or get signed, most of them go to the CFL.

Alright hosers! I want all twelve of us fighting for every meter on all three d-o-o-wns. We're going to make this a Boxing Day the Prime Minister will never forget!

I'll never forget the fierce rivalry that existed between the Rough Riders and the Roughriders.
The super-long endzones are cool, too.
November 15th, 2009 at 10:34 PM ^
Ugh, whats the Roughriders thing from? I cannot remember.
November 15th, 2009 at 10:39 PM ^
There were two teams called the "Rough Riders" and "Roughriders" in the CFL until one folded.
November 15th, 2009 at 10:40 PM ^
but it's from something, I distinctly remember hearing that joke before.
November 16th, 2009 at 12:41 AM ^
I think it's kind of the go to joke about the CFL.
