We dont need another coach that cant win., i am waiting for super coach. The one that never loses, recruits only 5 star players and who loves to converse with both fans and media.

If this team keeps going the way it is then it's a lock that we'll be getting nothing but 3 star players. MSU is good, but they just got waxed by Oregon, if short-term memory serves. The only five star players that MSU can get or will ever be able to get will be in state.

I think that we want better. Someone like Dantonio would be great, but not because they turn "3 stars into studs." Rather because they would be able to attract high level players from here but also from throughout the country and then develop them into NFL material.

Jimmy is an NFL guy, and that's it. He's not coming to Michigan. Even if the 49ers ditch him, there will be 4-5 teams, at least, that will vie for his services. Giants, Raiders, Bills, Jets, Cowboys, and maybe the Dolphins will all bend over backwards to grab him if he comes on the market. We've got the money to compete with them, but the glamour of an NFL job is MUCH more alluring than just about any college gig. And especially moreso than a has-been program in the worst conference in America.

Plus, it's got to be an ego thing. His brother has won a Super Bowl, and two of his former Pac-12 colleagues, Kelly and Carroll, are tearing the NFL up. He wants his chance to win it all too. And it's awfully hard to blame him.

Obviously we're all just putting forth our opinions and projecting here, but I have to agree with WolverineDevotee and others above who believe he just not necessarily an "NFL guy."  The man has largely been successful at every destination in his life.  Count me as one who seems to think that maybe the allure of being a "legend" or "savior" for his alma mater is particularly strong.  Perhaps he has realized the NFL is truly a more difficult grind that college, and perhaps he really wants to have more control and autonomy over his team.  Also, I just think his enthusiasm, emotions and "fire" are so much better suited to recruiting, motivating and teaching young men than it is to direct and manage professionals.  I think it is just as likely that he wants to be the next Belichek and it is he wants to be the next Nick Saban.

One more thing, it is always brought up that Mrs. Harbaugh did not want to leave the Bay Area.  If Jim were really to part ways with the 49ers after this season, how does the Mrs. feel abou the other locales that have been noted above (Dallas, NY, etc.?).

Just one more opinion to add to the large and useless pile we already have going.

what do you think of Teryl Austin? If DB is bent on having a Michigan Man connection, he would be a good candidate. Defense has been great under him at UF and coached good players as a position coach.

Despite having a shit load of injuries on defense, Lions defense is top 5 in the league.

9ers are average. Tell me one thing they are the best at? They do nothing special. Forget jim, gimme John.

Plus, cards blew someone else out last year that was supposed to be awesome. They do it every year. But yet, the cards are as average as average gets! I'm not a lions guy, but the lions have a shit ton more going for them than 75% of the league. If they use it, that's a different story.

...have been that what he really enjoys about coaching is the game-planning and play-calling. He likes the chess match.

And in college, with nobody on your squad over 22, you have to keep it somewhat simple. He doesn't like the limitations, and the extra stuff you get to do instead, like recruiting, isn't his cup of tea.

I don't think he'd ever leave the NFL for money. He might coach in college if it's his only choice, but it'd never be first choice.

and he will forever be one of my favorite Wolverines. I would dearly love it if he came back, but I just don't see it happening. Harbaugh is hyper-competitive. I don't see him leaving before a Super Bowl win.

That said, Harbaugh is exactly what this program needs.Fiery, ultracompetitive, and the personification of what Michigan was for so long.

Has a successful NFL coach ever willingly moved on to coach college football? There is no precedent, I can't think of a single instance and the only coaches that have arguably been more succesful than Jim in the past 4 years are his brother, John Fox, and Pete Carroll.

I'm not sure how you want to define "successful", but with that said, Saban went 9-7 in a tougher division IMO, and then 6-10, and left for Alabama.... wasn't fired. But then again, Harbaugh won divisions... so it's all on your definition of 'successful'...

Sub .500 would definitely qualify as not succesful no matter what the division looked like. Saban is an amazing coach, but he definitely didn't show it at the pro level. I've read many times that the way Saban handles his program and players is much more conducive to success in college because of the constant turnover and thus less chance of a revolt. All the message board and think piece scuttle-butt on Jim seems to be the same; saying he's just too big a presence and too domineering to keep a team full of professional grown-men together for a long time. Even if that is the case, Jim has been to three straight NFC championship games and a Superbowl in the past 3 years. That guy has had success at the highest level in a way that Saban could only dream. This alone seems to preclude Jim ever returning to college. Dude can get it done on the biggest stage. If he ever coaches college again its because it's what his heart wants. There is zero evidence to suggest his heart wants him back in Ann Arbor.

As a fan base we need to move on from thinking that this program has to be coached by a Michigan Man. Harbaugh is not coming here. Not now, not in five years, never. Unless he gets divorced, he is not moving to Michigan. He is a pro coach now and will remain a pro coach. There will always be jobs available to him. Good coaches have been run out by their fans. Look at Mac Brown. Now being a commentator, he would never go back to coaching. Who wants a job where their every move is second-guessed?

He already "came home"—to Palo Alto:

"I used to stare down at that field as I was stenciling those numbers," Harbaugh told reporters, athletes and others who crowded into the Arrillaga Family Sports Center's Kissick Auditorium. "I so very badly wanted to go to Stanford and play for the Cardinal. … This was my number-one choice all along."

Harbaugh is never going to Michigan.  From what I have heard, his wife is not leaving California.  (I know from experience how hard it is to get a California girl to leave California--and a Michigan girl to come to California, for that matter.)

The Niners have been arguably more frustrating to watch than Michigan.  They cannot finish games.  Teams make adjustments and stuff Kap in the second half.  And he got outplayed today by Drew Fucking Stanton.  Their defense was aging last year and the year before; now they are downright rickety.  The Niners missed their window.

I didn't realize that Harbaugh had so many close friends that were members of this blog- everyone has an opinion as well as to why he would or wouldn't come here. The most important thing is to conduct a real coaching search and talk to all of your candidates including Harbaugh. My only hope is that they stay away from Carr's coaching tree.

Even a small chance is good enough to keep going for a Michigan fan nowadays. If we can get one of the Harbaugh's, that is great. I wish we do. I will take a small chance and eagerly await the development (and be disappointed at the end). I will also root for the B1G title and whooping MSU and OSU. That is a small chance too, but what else we got going on. I will also root for DG to throw 25 TDs and zero TOs going forward. Probably .1%. I will root for Shane to start and be like Tom Brady by MSU game and pick them apart. I will give that .2% only because I have seen DG play before. When we need hope, why not dream about Harbaugh, when all other good things have a small % happening. All those people who say no chance, have some faith. Lions just beat Rodgers and made him look like DG. Who saw that coming. Anything can happen. Go Blue! Go all the teams that play against SF, except Cowboys and Giants. I just hate them regardless.
