The company I work for drug tests. My kids are trying to go to college and play sports which involves drug testing. They drive around on the weekends and I don't want them driving stoned and I want them to have their wits about them to avoid people who ARE high.

In contrast, my mother is 51 and was absolutely SHOCKED to find out that I had never tried pot. She doesn't smoke now, but did in her youth, and apparently she "just assumed [I'd] tried it". It also has been demonstrated to have several valuable medicinal properties (aside from the analgesic properties that justify its use as "medical marijuana") and is being explored more and more (med student). It is also most definitely safer than alcohol, considering you can actually DIE from alcohol withdrawal if you're enough of an addict. There's actually no physiological withdrawal (therefore, addiction) associated with marijuana in normally consumed quantities. The only potential for addiction is psychological, which is basically not the case for any other recreational drug/nicotine/alcohol. The medicinal uses of cocoa, however, are unknown to me.
I applaud you for attempting to set a good example for your kids. I don't do pot, and I wouldn't want my kids to do it either. Frankly, I don't really get the appeal. But if it was between pot and cigarettes, I'd rather they choose pot.

brother used to keep the tradition going. AFAIK the 4:20 came from some high schoolers in San Fransisco area that all met up after school at 4:20.
In the late 60s and early 70s, I remember a lot of long haired hippies coming to our house at 4:20pm because we had a detatched garage and my brother installed an exhaust fan. As soon as someone heard the back door open, there was enough time to pull the smoke out. They would start their mini-bikes (2 cycle) to help.
It wasnt until later that my brother told me he was one of the biggest pot dealers in school. Quite a businessman.

I lived in a house with 8 other guys (was not a frat house) and they all smoked the smelly green leaf and grew it! But, I was the only one that didnt smoke, because I simply didn't like it. Their were many times we would all sit in the front room doing whatever and they would all be smoking and I would help pass it around and not once was I ever pressured into smoking the bowl, bong, joint, blunt. They were all pretty good roommates.

In all seriousness, as someone who has relocated by myself to a new city, I'd recommend just hitting a few local hole-in-the-wall bars and asking the bartender or waitress. Yes, you may have to do a little profiling, but it shouldn't take more than a couple hours and a few beers to get yourself started.

That's exactly what my parents did with alcohol. If they wanted to drink they'd drink, they didn't make it out to be some big deal, and that made me less tempted to drink because it wasn't some special thing that was being kept away from me. While there are always those who will want to get absolutely wasted, it seems like some underage drinkers just try to consume as much as possible because it's not accessible to them otherwise. IIRC, many countries with lower drinking ages have much fewer issues with DUI's, public intoxication, etc. However, that could be chalked up to a lot of other reasons though. I just picture binge drinking being more common in areas where alcohol consumption is more controlled.
