Awesome!

It's hard watching the news and only hearing about depressing stories. Wish the news would focus more on positive stories like this kid. Kudos to his parents for raising him the right way!

I like the kid's name, as it is cool and hip. If I have a kid, it's name will he cool, hip, and modern. It won't be something cliché like Mike, Jason, Tom, or anything else that is way too common.

For the record, I have a common name.

Hmmm, here's a counterpoint (to unusual and cool names)

There's a family in my church who wanted to go the route of a unique name. Their first daughter was named "Ashly." The second was named "Nik-ee" (or Nichole.) Children three and four had common names. The hassle of dealing with constant misspellings, etc., was more trouble than it was worth.

I have been tripped up by the name Deshawn. How many variations can there be?

  • Deshawn
  • DeShawn
  • D'Shawn
  • Desean
  • DeSean
  • D'Sean
  • Dashawn
  • DaShawn
  • Dasean
  • DaSean
  • Deshaun
  • DeShaun
  • D'Shaun
  • Dashaun
  • DaShaun

I give up. After that, I like a simple name like "Bob" or Jim."

And then there are nicknames. There was a classmate at Michigan with the name of "Richard." I asked if he had a preferred nickname (Rick, Rich, etc.) He said, "No, it doesn't matter." To which, of course, I replied, "Okay, Dick."

FTR, my father wanted to give me a somewhat uncommon name, which my mom strongly vetoed:  Barnabas.

Stephen is alright, but if you're going to be named after a martyr it should be something cool like Ignatius.

mispronunciation just as bad

My son's name is Xavier and people mispronounce it all the time as 'ex-avier', rather than 'Zavier'...mildly annoying, but doesn't really bother me except when people actually try correct me or him, in which case I politely indciate that it is like xylophone or Xerxes or xenophobia or xerox or pretty much all words that start with X.

'Scuse me, but I think I know how to pronounce my son's name correctly.

While I appreciate the kid's efforts to help with hot lunch....

I pretty much ate a sandwich, fruit, milk and a cookie or mini candy bar every day from 1st to 6th grade... Doesn't sound like the district is doing anything wrong here.

So did I, but I had a hot meal at home every evening. I'm not too sure about Howell's poverty level, but there students in my relatively wealthy district for whom school lunch is the only hot meal of the day.

That's a big heart for a little kid.
