OT: 30 for 30 The U Part 2

Submitted by OccaM on

The 30 for 30 series is amazing in my opinion. The U Part 1 was one of the better ones.

The sequel should be entertaining as well as it covers the 00-03 Canes I believe. Those teams were stacked with NFL talent.

9:00 ESPN. It should be a very entertaining watch.

Crazy how Shalala is just as dirty as Shapiro was in the ponzi schemes. She pretty much threw the team under the bus when sanctions came around.

To be fair, if they had instant replay back then, OSU wins that game in regulation. The receiver clearly caught the ball on 3rd down with like 2 minutes left.

Even though we were die hard Michigan fans, the Canes would be the only school we would commit to over UofM. They were ballers, unfortunately for us, we were DIII caliber players...

If Mghee never got hurt they would have won. F*ck clarett and the vest.

What a weird program Miami was. No real history worth mentioning prior to 1983.

I'd say I'd feel bad for them, but Miami sports "fans" aren't fans. Example:

The only thing I feel bad about is them tearing down the Orange Bowl.

They were fun to watch. They were all talk but could back it up with amazing games. Everyone hates them not because they were assholes but because they were good assholes. Oregon today is similar. They found a way to take the college foot all world by surprise with their uniforms. People only have a problem with it because they are winning.

Yeah I agree.  The Part 1 - U in the 80's was like XXX rating in regards to swagger, attitude, complete over indulgence, and just utter dominance and overall craziness.  The part 2 U was like TV-MA in comparison - an almost return to the 80's but with a little less swagger and more restraint.

I might be exagerating a bit, but I really really think Michigan as a team standpoint has been missing that type of edge that Miami had. I saw it with OSU during the 2000s. They say football is a mental game. I really think the reason OSU was able to beat Michigan nearly every year under Carr was just simply that mentality and edge that they had which Michigan didn't.

I agree about the mental aspect of football.  There are different things that you as a player should want to happen every play:

  1. Win the down - i.e. meaning as an 11 man unit the play was in your favor
  2. Win your responsibility - if your job is to block - block, run your route correctly, etc..
  3. Absolutely crush/own your 1 on 1 match up.  Not just win - shock and awe - make them not want to come back for the next play

1 & 2 are what all teams strive for.  3 is what the great ones DO - they don't try to do it - they DO it.  There are ill intentions its not about physically wining the match up - its about mentally decimating your opponent.  3 is where that Miami swagger/attitude and some of the 00's Ohio teams had.  I guess the best example I can think of was Jordan.  He lived for #3.  He wasn't happy with winning - he wanted to demolish you emotionally, mentally, physically, etc...

Now, if you think about it.  If you do #3, then 1 & 2 take care of themselves.  I think that is what Desmond was saying on Gameday ealier this year about him not seeing anyone with that "it" factor in practice except Peppers.  The naturally great players have 3 from the word go, but other people not naturally gifted or athletic freaks can still get to #3 consistently if they have the mental edge/toughness.

If McGahee's knee hadn't literally exploded in that bowl game, would anyone still be talking about Clarett and Tressel ten years later? There's been few times in my life I've been so mad watching a game involving teams that weren't Michigan.

make me realize just how much better college football is about keeping their players under wraps and out of the constant spotlight.  Its been years since we had teams like Miami or players like Bosworth or Sanders.

Miami was excellent in 2001/02 but I still maintain the Big East was no challenge at all.

It had been a long time since I really sat and looked at the 2001 Hurricanes, but this was a good reminder of just how deep that team was, even though we can definitely quibble about SOS in the Big East at the time and things like that. You definitely can't deny the fact that 38 players on that team went to the NFL at some point, and among those, you'll find dozens of collective Pro Bowl appearances (several players having gone multiple times, of course) and four or five (names that I can recall anyway) players who were on a winning Super Bowl team. That's one heck of a legacy.

As a double UM guy, MBA was Univ Miami (YTM), I can tell you that Miami 100% sold out for Football and had a unique situation with recruiting - that it's not even comparable to Michigan- nor would we want to be them even with their 6 (YES 6) NC's.

The reason they have an entire country worth of stud recruits in South Florida is because of the abject poverty/crime of that area - your wildest dreamed up stories of Detroit pale in comparison to the reality of south Florida. That type of life caused Miami to grow some incredibly tough kids, who also were supremely athletic - guess a strongest survive type environment. Michigan doesn't have that and won't ever be able to tap into that- reason #1 we cannot expect that type of run/success.

The other reason was the entire University from top to very bottom was 100% behind success at all costs (Till they brought in Willow - Donna) and both on campus and off you saw it daily. Best part- everyone was fine with it because we were winning football games! NCAA be damned they openly discussed how "if no one talks no one walks" and it was obvious when you encountered the football dorm, you could get contact high by walking those floors, no chance anyone would pass a legit drug test.

Even with all that winning, Orange Bowl was 1/3rd empty (Yes even NC years), Miami was struggling for money to non-football fund raisers, and the medical college was the only legit degree program they had (No not even the Business College - we had multiple choice exams in 1/2 th MBA courses).

I guess my rant is just to warn everyone that watched those two entertaining 30 for 30's that nothing is more different than Michigan and Miami (YTM). You don't want the problems they have, even if you got the same level of recruits they have/had, or the impact on education when the university is all in on sports not academics.

BTW odd tidbits- Donna is done this year, she single handily took every dollar from sports for the academic side, if next President is more sports orientated the U will be back in 2 years.

For putting some perspective here.  Yes they were loaded, but not even OSU could get away with what they did.  They were gang bangers playing NCAA football.

No way most went to school, no way most could pass  a drug test.  No way, 50% of the kids could get accept at Michigan, let alone MSU.

30 for 30 is the best documentary series. Period, but they did not bring up the other side at all.  This is a U love fest.

I don't know why there is so much excuse making for Michigan, and so much claim of the teams that actually were great being called cheaters. It's a classic losers excuse. Mchigan isn't in the same breath as The U, Nebraska, USC, Alabama, and yes, Ohio State over the last 30 years. Michigan has not been on top of the college football mountain since the early 1900's when Michigan used to pay people to play football for them that were not even students ( yea, look it up) . Michigan gave birth to idea of cheating in order to win. Michigan has a great deal of history and tradition, cheating was very much a part of it. But now that we suck. Are irrelevant to everyone outside Ann Arbor, we want to point the finger at the teams that are actually winning and say " they are not playing fair" . What a joke. Just exactly what everyone expects the smart mouth, cocky little boy who just got his ass beat to say. How about we grow the fuck up and accept what we are today, and have been for quite some time.
