OT: 22 y/o Michigan student wins Ann Arbor City Council race
"Ackerman, who ousted four-term incumbent Stephen Kunselman in the Aug. 4 primary, is unopposed heading into the Nov. 3 general election."
"Ackerman ran with support from Mayor Christopher Taylor and his allies, waging an aggressive campaign and knocking on thousands of doors in the 3rd Ward.
In the end, he pulled off a surprise upset, winning by 40 votes — in large part thanks to a lopsided 345-171 victory in the Burns Park area, his home turf."

What are the other top Ann Arbor neighborhoods?
August 16th, 2015 at 11:51 PM ^
Kerrytown, Eberwhite & the other neighborhoods just to the west of Main.

Harbaugh, Bo, Canham, Ufer all lived in the neighborhoods between Geddes and Washtenaw east of campus a bit. Lots of english sounding roads - Devonshire, Exmoor, Overridge, Newcastle, Aberdeen, Londonderry. Lots of cool homes north of Washtenwaw coming out of campus and between Geddes and the Huron River.

Yes just go on Trulia and change the search settings to $1M+ homes in Ann Arbor and most of them will show up right there between Geddes Rd and Washtenaw Ave.

Burns Park is an actual park. It's therefore quite logical that the area around it is the Burns Park area.

Many UM students don't realize that the world does not revolve around them. They blithely go about their business in complete ignorance of the world around them.

If that qualifies as a "blanket statement" then it must be an infant's blanket you are referring to.

Wow, you're douchey.

I have lived and worked in Ann Arbor for most of my life. My dad worked for 25 years as a FedEx guy in Ann Arbor. What I wrote comes from me and my father's experiences.
Many UM students ARE solipsistic. I'm sorry that you don't like me pointing that out, but it's true.
It doesn't condemn the entire UM student population. Many are conscious of others and act accordingly. But a significant poriton are not and many Ann Arborites will agree with me.
Sorry that this upsets you so much that you feel compelled to name call.

Many people are solipsistic, full stop (how's that for a pretentious idiom?).
And c'mon, "solipsism" is either a form of philosophical idealism or a psychological pathology. It seems incommensurable to apply the term to "many UM students". It's like stating that "many UM students" are "anti-realists" or "hypochondriacs."
All kidding aside, I am really sorry your dad had such a bad experience in the city. I am guessing that his frustrating interactions were caused by the itinerant nature of college students. I personally struggled greatly with FedEx and UPS drivers until I stopped moving every year and got a chance to know the drivers personally. Since then I have had nothing but excellent interactions with them. I can't imagine how hard it is to cater to hundreds of people's fussy delivery preferences without ever meeting them only to have them change every 6 months or so.
Self-centered attitudes and tribalisms pervade all walks of life, all political groups, and all regions of the country. I found the people of Ann Arbor (and UofM) to be amongst the warmest and most open-minded that I have ever met; try spending some time in Princeton, NJ if you want to see the most extreme form of elitism (I wouldn't actually recommend this).

But it does revolve around Harbaugh, just ask dantanio.

This statement is made about every nice part of every city. Find me an affluent(ish) neighborhood that people don't refer to ass snobby and elitest.
August 17th, 2015 at 2:42 AM ^
Yeah, but it's also usually true lol
August 17th, 2015 at 1:02 AM ^
So what exactly do snobby, elitist elementary school kids do? Eat only Monkey Butter brand peanut butter? Read only the pre-Honey Bear books in the Berenstain Bear series?

having grown up in a college town, i think this is not good. iirc, the students get a rep on the city council. however, if you have students getting elected to city council, they likely are gone in a few years and don't have to live with the decisions they make. it may all sound good, but the residents living there for the long term have to live with those decisions.
sorry, but students often do not even pay income taxes in MI but in the state they come from.
August 16th, 2015 at 8:54 PM ^
Well, that would seem to be the grave Ann Arbor's residents dug for themselves. He was elected after all - not appointed
