OT: 22 y/o Michigan student wins Ann Arbor City Council race

Submitted by UMProud on

"Ackerman, who ousted four-term incumbent Stephen Kunselman in the Aug. 4 primary, is unopposed heading into the Nov. 3 general election."

"Ackerman ran with support from Mayor Christopher Taylor and his allies, waging an aggressive campaign and knocking on thousands of doors in the 3rd Ward.

In the end, he pulled off a surprise upset, winning by 40 votes — in large part thanks to a lopsided 345-171 victory in the Burns Park area, his home turf."

Harbaugh, Bo, Canham, Ufer all lived in the neighborhoods between Geddes and Washtenaw east of campus a bit. Lots of english sounding roads - Devonshire, Exmoor, Overridge, Newcastle, Aberdeen, Londonderry. Lots of cool homes north of Washtenwaw coming out of campus and between Geddes and the Huron River.

I have lived and worked in Ann Arbor for most of my life. My dad worked for 25 years as a FedEx guy in Ann Arbor. What I wrote comes from me and my father's experiences.

Many UM students ARE solipsistic. I'm sorry that you don't like me pointing that out, but it's true.

It doesn't condemn the entire UM student population. Many are conscious of others and act accordingly. But a significant poriton are not and many Ann Arborites will agree with me.

Sorry that this upsets you so much that you feel compelled to name call.

Many people are solipsistic, full stop (how's that for a pretentious idiom?).

And c'mon, "solipsism" is either a form of philosophical idealism or a psychological pathology. It seems incommensurable to apply the term to "many UM students". It's like stating that "many UM students" are "anti-realists" or "hypochondriacs."

All kidding aside, I am really sorry your dad had such a bad experience in the city. I am guessing that his frustrating interactions were caused by the itinerant nature of college students. I personally struggled greatly with FedEx and UPS drivers until I stopped moving every year and got a chance to know the drivers personally. Since then I have had nothing but excellent interactions with them. I can't imagine how hard it is to cater to hundreds of people's fussy delivery preferences without ever meeting them only to have them change every 6 months or so.

Self-centered attitudes and tribalisms pervade all walks of life, all political groups, and all regions of the country. I found the people of Ann Arbor (and UofM) to be amongst the warmest and most open-minded that I have ever met; try spending some time in Princeton, NJ if you want to see the most extreme form of elitism (I wouldn't actually recommend this).

You're exactly right. This guy is the most ill informed, wannabe poseur on this board. He pontificates and consistently misuses "big words" while pretending to be an expert in whatever field is at issue. My mental picture is a guy who lives in a studio surrounded by conspiracy theory magazines, playing himself at scrabble and cheating by using the dictionary and thesaurus, taking breaks only to use his newfound word of the day on an mgoblog post.

having grown up in a college town, i think this is not good.  iirc, the students get a rep on the city council.  however, if you have students getting elected to city council, they likely are gone in a few years and don't have to live with the decisions they make.  it may all sound good, but the residents living there for the long term have to live with those decisions.

sorry, but students often do not even pay income taxes in MI but in the state they come from.

Of course they should be able to run for and hold seats on the council. Students are a part of not just the uni community, but the city. They bring a lot of money to the area and yes they contribute property taxes. Just as a share of any tenant's rent goes toward taxes via their landlord, same is true for students. Besides, the students are pretty geographically concentrated. It's not like the council is in danger of being overrun by 19 year olds.

WD, is that you?  Wait till he flashes the City Council Super Guide on his fellow council members, they wont know what hit them.  Can't wait to see what his City Council office will look like....
