For God's sake, don't let anyone convince you to do the whole dumbass "Do 21 shots in an hour" routine. You don't want your parents to have to view your drunken and very dead body on a slab at the hospital morgue the day after your birthday.

I've never actually heard of anyone even trying to do that, I think it's more or less close to an urban myth.
Personally, though, I think Charley's would be my bar of choice.

A Michigan student died on shot #20 back in 2000. It's not a myth: people try it. I'd link to the article but there's no point.
A good rule to have with your friends is that if they buy you a drink, they (not the group, but whoever is buying that round) have to have the same one with you. This paces the amount you will receive but also limits the amount of 151 mixed with Wild Turkey you might intake if your friends are dicks (I think that concoction might be the "Hairy Gorilla Fart" or "Piss Behind the Urinal" shot at Charley's).

I remember an MSU student who died on his 21st after doing 21 shots around that time, not a UM student. He did all 21, went home, drank more, and then died.
I'm pretty sure no Michigan student died doing it.

Maybe an MSU student died too, but a Michigan engineering student died on his 20th Scotch in 2000. It happened. Of course, he supposedly had those 20 shots in 10 minutes, which would put almost anyone except Andre the Giant in the hospital.

i believe it is possible, i was still coherent after 15 in an hour. as long as you arent retarded and have good friends you wont die. Though on my 21st i did wake up in the bathroom with the door being broken down on top of me.

I believe your anecdotal account. But, it is still a bad idea...regardless of who your friends are.
I survived a head on collision with a 2 ton pickup truck at 50 mph while I was driving a midsize sedan. I proved it can be survived, but I really really do not recommend anyone else trying it.

Are you confusing this with a power hour? 60 shots of beer in 60 minutes. I don't think that would kill an average person, but it is a good way to start a good night.
As for the shots...pace yourself. Be wise.
Here's the strategy that worked for me 8+ years ago:
1. Bring a pen with you and tally your drinks on your arm.
2. Count beers, wines, shots (whatev) as a a drink.
3. Cheat as needed and mark extra tallies as you go.
...That will get people off of your back.
5. Have at least two people you really really trust with your life watch your back.
6. Have fun. You won't remember much of it.

I had a friend of mine (there was no way that I could've done it) did the 21 shots in probably 2-2.5 hours (1 would've been pushing it) then still showed up to class the next morning.
Of course, dude reeked of alcohol all morning.

If you're looking to actually enjoy your alcohol at a decent pace, go to Ashley's (great beers). If you're just looking to get completely blitzed, then doesn't matter what bars you go to; shots are shots. And yes, the 21 shots on your 21st birthday is dumb; I've never known anyone who's tried it anyways.

If you're looking for loudness, darkness, smelliness, drunkiness, and skanks go to Rick's.
On my birthday, I went to several bars. I had 2-3 drinks at each. However, when we arrived at Rick's I was too pissed to climb the stairs to leave, so we stayed for too many more.
Beware the stop light! They don't taste bad, but three in a row gives zero chance for recovery.

I'd say the South U bars are the best place for an undergrad bar crawl so Charleys to Brown Jug to Mitch's to Ricks then to BTB Cantina just before 2 to finish the night off and get some drunk food. Can't really go wrong with bars in Ann Arbor tho save maybe Monkey or Alley bar

Stay away from Main st. unless you're a hippie or a grad student, which I'm guessing you're not. I recommend getting your free shots on South U: the Jug, Charlies, Blue Lep, Cantina, and if you're feeling really fratty Rick's.

Just don't do straight shots, mix in some girly shots, red headed sluts, dirty girl scouts, etc. Don't let your friends order you anything like Jackson 5, Four Horsemen, Three Wisemen, or anything involving Mayo and you'll be fine. It may sound lame, but at least you'll be alive. Save the days of drinking an entire bottle of jack for when you're more seasoned, like 21 and a half.

some good suggestions here. FWIW Ann Arbor Brewing Co also has some great beers. I'd put it in the Ashley's / Grizzly Peak experience category.
But yea, 21st birthdays at Charlies are standard. If you're gonna drink a ton it's a better deal and you won't have your taste buds for long anyways.
