So today is a monumental day for me: 21 years old. So my question to all of you Mgobloggers is what are the best bars in Ann Arbor that I must go to tonight?
Edit: went to charleys and brown jug and had plenty of shots...thanks for advice
1 word: sharkbowls
That is the very first thing I did when I turned 21 in AA. I then had to be carried home by my 2 friends that night.
it was one of the best birthdays i've ever had...mine ended the same way
For God's sake, don't let anyone convince you to do the whole dumbass "Do 21 shots in an hour" routine. You don't want your parents to have to view your drunken and very dead body on a slab at the hospital morgue the day after your birthday.
I've never actually heard of anyone even trying to do that, I think it's more or less close to an urban myth.
Personally, though, I think Charley's would be my bar of choice.
Like 40% of people I know over 21 at least started out the night of their 21st birthday intended to try the 21 shot salute. You sir, are wrong.
I give that five fakes out of five.
A Michigan student died on shot #20 back in 2000. It's not a myth: people try it. I'd link to the article but there's no point.
A good rule to have with your friends is that if they buy you a drink, they (not the group, but whoever is buying that round) have to have the same one with you. This paces the amount you will receive but also limits the amount of 151 mixed with Wild Turkey you might intake if your friends are dicks (I think that concoction might be the "Hairy Gorilla Fart" or "Piss Behind the Urinal" shot at Charley's).
I remember an MSU student who died on his 21st after doing 21 shots around that time, not a UM student. He did all 21, went home, drank more, and then died.
I'm pretty sure no Michigan student died doing it.
Maybe an MSU student died too, but a Michigan engineering student died on his 20th Scotch in 2000. It happened. Of course, he supposedly had those 20 shots in 10 minutes, which would put almost anyone except Andre the Giant in the hospital.
...this incident since it occurred during my undergrad days.
Plenty of fun to be had in AA, but don't fall for anyone trying to push the "21 for 21" routine on you.
may be an urban myth to you but it's a rural reality in many places. Don't cause yourself pain...stay away from the grain.
Ever heard of East Lansing? Too Many kids have died in the last few years trying to pull that off. That's not a knock on sparty, that's the truth.
Is it a sign I'm an alcoholic if the first time I read that I nodded my head in agreement instead of seeing the sarcasm?
i believe it is possible, i was still coherent after 15 in an hour. as long as you arent retarded and have good friends you wont die. Though on my 21st i did wake up in the bathroom with the door being broken down on top of me.
I believe your anecdotal account. But, it is still a bad idea...regardless of who your friends are.
I survived a head on collision with a 2 ton pickup truck at 50 mph while I was driving a midsize sedan. I proved it can be survived, but I really really do not recommend anyone else trying it.
How many shots did you have first?
Anybody can have 15 shots of Sour Pucker.
Are you confusing this with a power hour? 60 shots of beer in 60 minutes. I don't think that would kill an average person, but it is a good way to start a good night.
As for the shots...pace yourself. Be wise.
Here's the strategy that worked for me 8+ years ago:
1. Bring a pen with you and tally your drinks on your arm.
2. Count beers, wines, shots (whatev) as a a drink.
3. Cheat as needed and mark extra tallies as you go.
...That will get people off of your back.
5. Have at least two people you really really trust with your life watch your back.
6. Have fun. You won't remember much of it.
number 5 on that list is likely the most important.
also, slam a tall glass of alka seltzer before you hit the sack.
I had a friend of mine (there was no way that I could've done it) did the 21 shots in probably 2-2.5 hours (1 would've been pushing it) then still showed up to class the next morning.
Of course, dude reeked of alcohol all morning.
Go to the Arena first. Then go anywhere else, which will seem so much better for not being the Arena.
Haha, whats with the Arena hating?? Red Berenson does his radio show there...
Nice! me too! I'm taking it easy and going to Charley's tonight. Enjoying a Bell's Winter White right now.
well happy birthday to you too! i'm going to the multiple venues on South U i believe
Have a great time tonight, but more importantly, have a safe time.
I am highly enjoying the juxtaposition of your message next to your somewhat macabre avatar.
Have fun...just not too much fun or you will regret tomorrow.
Maybe you will have to change your name from McPuppie to McDog now.
I hope we welcomed you in Windsor for #19 and #20; that said, if this is your first legal American Style Lager then why not Rick's. It's not wrong to follow in the footsteps of Ryan Mallett.
if you are a beer drinker.
Be safe and have a great time.
You people (except YakAttack so far) have pretty bad taste in bars.
If you're looking to actually enjoy your alcohol at a decent pace, go to Ashley's (great beers). If you're just looking to get completely blitzed, then doesn't matter what bars you go to; shots are shots. And yes, the 21 shots on your 21st birthday is dumb; I've never known anyone who's tried it anyways.
If you're looking for loudness, darkness, smelliness, drunkiness, and skanks go to Rick's.
On my birthday, I went to several bars. I had 2-3 drinks at each. However, when we arrived at Rick's I was too pissed to climb the stairs to leave, so we stayed for too many more.
Beware the stop light! They don't taste bad, but three in a row gives zero chance for recovery.
skanks eh..... Rick's it is...
but seriously just hopping along to multiple bars on South U
is in good order for your 21st. I'd say the South U bars are the best place for an undergrad bar crawl so Charleys to Brown Jug to Mitch's to Ricks then to BTB Cantina just before 2 to finish the night off and get some drunk food. Can't really go wrong with bars in Ann Arbor tho save maybe Monkey or Alley bar
Heidelberg, Grizzly Peak, Ashley's.
If you want to stick to South U area, Brown Jug and Charley's are your best bets.
you should go to the bar that is hot tonight (or has a cheap special). I'm assuming that it is the same as a few years ago when certain days = certain bars (especially because it's a Monday).
You'll get a free shot at most of the bars on south U..might as well capitalize on the one night a year when you can get a few free (shitty) drinks.
Stay away from Main st. unless you're a hippie or a grad student, which I'm guessing you're not. I recommend getting your free shots on South U: the Jug, Charlies, Blue Lep, Cantina, and if you're feeling really fratty Rick's.
Go to The Brown Jug!
AS I read your post, I heard Joe Pa from the Big Ten commericial saying, "GOOO TO THE BROWWWN JUUUUGGG!"
100 shots for century club in beer isn't too bad, 21 shots isn't too much either as long as you pace yourself and don't be stupid
I'd go to the Blue Lep. or Charlies for sure... Be safe, and have fun!!
Just don't do straight shots, mix in some girly shots, red headed sluts, dirty girl scouts, etc. Don't let your friends order you anything like Jackson 5, Four Horsemen, Three Wisemen, or anything involving Mayo and you'll be fine. It may sound lame, but at least you'll be alive. Save the days of drinking an entire bottle of jack for when you're more seasoned, like 21 and a half.
some good suggestions here. FWIW Ann Arbor Brewing Co also has some great beers. I'd put it in the Ashley's / Grizzly Peak experience category.
But yea, 21st birthdays at Charlies are standard. If you're gonna drink a ton it's a better deal and you won't have your taste buds for long anyways.
Agreed, no need to overbooze. What you want to be doing is focusing on getting laid, not getting drunk. You have decades of time to get drunk with the boys. The years of easily pursuaded college girls paying any attention to you vanish more quickly than shot number 10 on the night of your bday. Remember this day for something special, like a bj in the Ashley's bathroom! It is your birthday, ask a girl for something special.
I've seen it done ... numerous times. Oddly enough, the guys who did it always ended up puking ridiculous amounts of alcohol back up and sobered up pretty quick.
The best was my friend's 21 - he did 21 shots, turned green and passed out around 11pm. I stopped around 15, drank gatorade, had pizza, etc.
At about 5 in the morning, I gotta go pee. I stumble into the bathroom and wonder if he's still alive - so I check his room (he was my roommate).
There he is, completely sober, uploading pictures onto facebook.
21 shots on your birthday is not completely crazy, you just need to start quite early (might be a bit late for tonight already), and pace yourself, drink some water here and there. And you should be aware of your tolerance level; if the most you've ever had in a day is 5-7 drinks, I wouldn't recommend going for 21.
As for bars, turning 21 at Charley's is the best option. Cheap drinks all around, and the best shot list on South U for your friends to choose from. Playing "Guess the shot" is always a good time
21 is tough no matter how you space them out - unless you're Alex Boone who apparently drank 30 beers on a regular basis.
If you try to go for 21 quickly, you'll black out before you even realize you're drunk. If you do it slowly, you'll start to feel tired and drunk before you hit 21.
Frankly I think you need to accept that 21 is a terrible idea (though it's awesome in hindsight).
I've broken 21 a few times, but I don't mean to encourage everyone to go for it. While it can be done, 21 drinks is probably a terrible idea for most people
Lots of different beers and the food is pretty good as well. Happy 21st.
Good food, best beer selection on tap in Ann Arbor (at least the last time I was in town). Tuesday will be a slow night for the usual suspects (FWIW, Scorekeeper's was the Tuesday night bar of chose circa 2004, but I bet that's changed).
I lived south of campus off Division, so for birthdays we tended to hang out more on the Main Street side of town. A good protein base and a few pints of good brews at Grizzly Peak was always a solid start. Then off to The Full Moon for another few pints of something tasty, then down to the 8 Ball to get your drink on. At closing time, you could take a quick turn by the Fleetwood to get some more grease in your system to make the morning just that much more enjoyable. It has been almost 15 years, so I am not sure if the Full Moon or the 8 Ball are still there, but I had a great time hitting those places on my 21st, and many, many times afterward.
They used to have $0.75 Black label cans. That place has character.
Well mostly. My birthday was on the 1st day of classes, so everone was in town, and nobody had a reason to bail out. We went to Mitch's when it was on the Northeast corner of S. U. and Forest. I think we ended up at the Jug and Charley's too. Man it was such a great time, and damn you all for making me long for my days on campus!
Charlie's is always a good choice, tell them its your birthday and ask for a strong island fishbowl. Your friends will tell you about it tomorrow.
Lot's of good places on 8 mile. Hopefully you see this wasted and actually go.
(It wasn't even their birthday) they were just a really huge dude who drank a TON). It isn't for mere mortals though.
