OT: 2018 Nebraska Coaching Staff Under New HC Scott Frost

Submitted by markusr2007 on

On September 22, 2018 Nebraska visits Michigan Stadium under new HC Scott Frost.

Frosts new coaching staff will be as follows:

Greg Austin, Offensive Line

Erik Chinander, Defensive Coordinator

Mike Dawson, Defensive Line

Jovan Dewitt, Outside Linebackers/Special Teams

Travis Fisher, Defensive Backs

Ryan Held, Running Backs

Mario Verduzco, Quarterbacks

Most notable to me is the selection for DC Erik Chinander from UCF.

Nebraska's biggest challenge since the departure of Frank Solich has been defense, and in particular scoring defense.  It has been atrocious by any standard.

Frost is extremely loyal to his staff and people with whom he's had history, so not entirely surprising to see him bring over the entire UCF crew.

However, Chinander has only two years experience as defensive coordinator position and was a LB position coach. UCF's 2016 and 2017 total defense against opponents with an offensive pulse were not compelling.

The OL and QB coaches appear to be solid, experienced and successful though.

I've never heard anything good about Pelini from anyone associated with Nebraska, or any reporters that cover them.  Apparently, he pissed off the alumni, boosters, fans, players, and the entire Ath Dept.

Not sure where the Riley idea came from, though.  Maybe just a knee-jerk reaction to get a warm body quickly?  Sort of like ASU?

Let's not forget Riley won 93 games in his tenure at Oregon State. I can see thinking it's a canny move, getting someone who has done more with less. But he had no ties to anywhere Nebraska recruits... Riley as never coached in the college ranks east of Colorado.

He's clearly a good coach. Maybe it would have worked out earlier in his career, but he was close to Edwards' age. That's got to make it tough starting over and building a program in a completely new area.

It will be easier on Edwards as he's not building anything, just serving as a caretaker. The crazy thing is that ASU's AD thinks that's a good idea.

You answered your own question. Nebraska fans have never been able to accept that the 93-97 run of 60-3 with three national titles (two deserved) was an anomaly for both the overall history of the program and the Osborne era. Solich did struggle against ranked teams, but his overall tenure is probably more reflective of Nebraska's ceiling now than the period before him.

They almost ran Osborne off for not being as good as Bob Devaney. Osborne's first decade DID see Nebraska get completely eclipsed by Barry Switzer's wishbone Sooners teams. Osborne was so sick of hearing people talk about firing him that he interviewed for Colorado. But the moral there is that a really good coach is hard to replace, and if you just stay patient that "good but not great coach" might just lead you to the greatest winning run in your program's history.

So Nebraska have always had that entitlement streak in them where they want to say "good isn't good enough." The difference in Osborne's time is they had a strong, sensible AD (his predecessor Devaney) who not only didn't want to fire Tom, but talked him into staying. In Solich's case, whoever the fool at Nebraska who didn't want to hire Tom as AD upon retirement is the real culprit for Nebraska's fall. The guy who ultimately fired Solich was hapless idiot in charge of things for no reason Steve Pederson.

the guy knows football and he knows what he is talking about... but then he says something so over the top that when he gets called out on it either on social media he gets pissy and blocks you or if you try to call into the radio show (notice they don't take a lot of callers) he argues with you about it... his new thing is to try and walk back his comments, example what he said about Butch Jones during the coaching search... he now claims that he never said once that Butch is or was a better coach of the job, but at the same time he tries and make people feel stupid for thinking that he ever said that...

the 2016 season he claimed up and down that the 97 D was better (it probably was, but why do you have to be that guy)... so after the Rutgers game when Michigan held them to like 20 yards I went on Twitter and said that Marcus was unimpressed and thinks that the 97 team would have held them to less and yes I tagged Marcus in the tweet... I was clearly joking around... Marcus got his panties in bunch over it responded to it basically calling me an idiot and that i didn't know what I was talking about and then blocked me... LOL

the guy is way too thin skinned to be in the industry he is in... if you are going to spew hot takes and a lot of other BS that people aren't going to agree with then you better be prepared for push back from people...

If I am remembering the schedule correctly, we'll find out on 9/22 this year if Frost's mother will be in attendance and be in agreement that Michigan did indeed get outhit.

I'll never understand that comment from his postgame presser. It almost seemed like he was looking for something positive - anything - even if it was demonstrably not true.

I have no doubt that Frost will put together a fun, high scoring offense. I just don’t think his defense will be strong enough to reach the levels of success that Nebraska fans demand. Will be an interesting game when we play them next year. Coach Frost is a good motivator and his kids play really hard for him. Won’t be an easy out.

But teams that score in bunches and move at a rapid pace, seem to never have a dominant defense. The object seems to be, to just outscore the opponent. Lets see how it translates in the Nebraska November weather. Although the past 2 Novembers in the north have been fairly mild.

I always had a soft spot for Nebraska.  I recall the Oklahoma / Nebraska games from the 1970s and I always leaned Nebraska.  I hope this hire does well for them.

Frost is extremely loyal to his staff and people with whom he's had history

He's only been a head coach two years, so how can you really know that?

You will noticed that many of them worked alongside him at Northern Iowa and Oregon and UCF.  He trusts them and has brought them along with him as his opportunities have expanded over time.

Not uncommon really. We are pattern seeking creatures. We usually go with what's worked well in past experience, and then learn to like it.

...of the Big 10 Conference can't rival its Eastern counterpart.  I can see Wisconsin, Iowa, and Nebraska all being top 25 teams.  Pat Fitzgerald does a nice job with Northwestern and at one time, Minnesota was a big-time program.  Even Purdue and Illinois had their day.  In fact, I'd say that longer term, the worst teams in the Western Division should be better that the two worst teams in the Eastern Conference (Rutgers and Maryland).
