OT: 2017 NBA Trade Deadline Open Thread

Submitted by MGoChippewa on

Figured this would be a good way to address today's biggest sports topic with one thread. We've already seen one star traded with DeMarcus Cousins heading to New Orleans.

Dallas just got Nerlens Noel for a protected first, Justin Anderson and Andrew Bogut.  Seems like a fair deal for both sides.

The Pistons are reportedly shopping Drummond, Reggie Jackson and KCP, although SVG (unsurprisingly) continues to downplay the chances they make a move.

Paul George or Jimmy Butler could be in Boston by the end of the day since it sounds like the Celtics are now open to dealing the 2017 Nets pick. Figured we can use this space to talk rumors, completed deals and what your team should be doing today. Happy deadline day!

I think PG stays in Indy until the end of the season.  I can't see anyone on the offer sheet that has enough to give Indy in return for PG.  I think he either stays in Indy and signs with LA in 2018 as a free agent, or Indy make some serious moves to get him some help.  Can't see the Celtics deal, if all they have is a first round pick to offer.

Boston also has several future first-round picks from the Nets, including a 2017 pick that's unprotected. Still, I agree he's unlikely to get moved. I'm not sure how much the Pacers can do this summer, I think George will have a hard time turning down a mega extension this summer if he qualifies (still up in the air right now).

We shall see.  I don't think Boston is a long term thing considering direct quotes from PG himself.

edit:  looks like Indy will keep PG just as I suspected.  I can see a deal in the offseason though.

He hasn't played in weeks, but supposedly he'd been cleared to return to the Celtics after the All-Star break. He's also one of the most likely players to be traded for Paul George or Jimmy Butler. Perhaps something is close to happening.

Stealing this from another board, but this is the kind of trade I'd cobble together if I were the Pistons:

Philly out: Jahlil Okafor, Nik Stauskas
Philly In: Reggie Jackson, Boban Marjanovic

Suns out: Brandon Knight
Suns In: Aron Baynes, Detroit 2nd rounder

Pistons out: Reggie Jackson, Aron Baynes, Boban Marjanovic, 2nd rounder
Pistons In: Jahlil Okafor, Nik Stauskas, Brandon Knight

We end up:

Ish Smith/Brandon Knight/Beno Udrih
Kentavious Caldwell-Pope/Nik Stauskas/Darrun Hilliard/Michael Gbinije
Marcus Morris/Stanley Johnson/Reggie Bullock
Jon Leuer/Tobias Harris/Henry Ellenson
Andre Drummond/Jahlil Okafor

Philly wants to move Okafor?  Suns are practically giving Knight away?  At your service.

I'd love to see Jackson moved because he just doesn't fit on this team but I don't get that trade. Oakfor doesn't play D and just isn't all that good and Brandon Knight isn't an upgrade.

I'd love the Pistons to get a pure shooter like Stauskas but he hasn't done anything in the NBA. I guess the one plus would be to get rid of Jackson's contract but it doesn't improve them much at all in the big picture.

One of the major issues with the Pistons is when SVG stepped in the owner didn't want a complete rebuild. He wanted to avoid tanking, win now and build on the fly. Taking that stance SVG never got any franchise caliber talent found within the top 3 picks of the NBA drafts.

Right now SVG has one truly good flawed player, some crap contracts, a bunch of average NBA players whos game DOES NOT compliment anyone else on the team and no one can shoot.

Pistons are the island of misfit toys

That's true but they were always on the edge of the lottery. We needed a legit #1 pick to turn into the face of a franchise. Knight, Monroe fail fail etc etc. Drummound is the best we have and he's a legit NBA center but he's not going to ever carry the team especially with the kind of PG he has now and lack of shooters.

SVG made Jackson appear from nothing (then gave him a huge contract he's not living up to), basically stole Morris and Harris but again its like this team has no direction and no one can shoot the lights out. According to most NBA people SG is one of the easiest positions to fill but this team sucks d*ck at f*#king pu$$y.

When Joey D put his championship team together he brought in a bunch of misfits but they complimented each other and played their asses off. You could slowly see them finding themselves. This team are a bunch of misfits too but they're just good enough to be an 8 seed and repeatedly get bounced by Cleveland every year.

SG is fine with KCP. Though we might not pay him this summer. Backup SG is atrocious. And Jackson's contract is not huge. It was considered too much before the cap increase, but it's a fine contract. One that is easily movable. But if he was playing like he was last year, people would be calling that contract a steal.

You don't have to get a top 5 pick, or even draft in the lottery to find a star. You just have to be better at identifying talent. I know other teams missed out on these players too, but there's several options in almost every class. Would have been nice to get 1 or 2 right. 2009 Pick 15 - Austin Daye Players selected after... Jrue Holiday (17), Ty Lawson (18), Jeff Teague (19), Darren Collison (21), Taj Gibson (26), Demarre Carroll (27), Danny Green (46), Patty Mills (55), 2010 Pick 7 - Greg Monroe Players selected after... Al-Farouq Aminu (8) Gordon Heyward (9), Paul George (10), Eric Bledsoe (18), Avery Bradley (19), Hassan Whiteside (33) 2011 Pick 8 - Brandon Knight Players selected after... Kemba Walker (9), Klay Thompson (11), Morris Twins (13,14), Kawhi Leonard (15), Nikola Vucevic (16), Iman Shumpert (17), Tobias Harris (19), Kenneth Faried (22), Nikola Mirotic (23), Reggie Jackson (24), Jimmy Butler (30), Chandler Parsons (38), Isaiah Thomas (60) 2012 Pick 9 - Andre Drummond Players selected after... Draymond Green (35) [They basically nailed this draft] 2013 Pick 8 - Kentavious Caldwell-Pope Players selected after... CJ McCollum (10), Giannis Antetokounmpo (15), Rudy Gobert (27) [Overall, not a bad pick. Obviously, The Greek Freak... But you're not taking Gobert with Drummond already in tow, and CJ is better offensively, but KCP is a better defender.] 2014 No pick, lost to Charlotte (Detroit/Michigan luck due to the smallest of percentages) No game changers aside from The Joker in round 2 from pick #9 on. 2015 Pick 8 - Stanley Johnson Players selected after... Frank Kaminsky (9), Myles Turner (11), Devin Booker (13) 2016 Not gonna bother because the pick was outside of the lottery and most of the class has yet to develop yet.

The Pistons could have had a roster consisting of Jeff Teague, Paul George, Kawhi Leonard, Andre Drummond, The Greek Freak, Isaiah Thomas (last pick, so they could've take Leonard in the 1st, IT in the 2nd) & Miles Turner... That almost makes me feel as bad as passing on Melo, Wade and Bosh for Darko, lol.

The Pistons was debating between Devin Booker and Stanley Johnson but ultimately chose Stanley because of his age, size, athleticism and potential.  With Devin Booker quickly becoming one of the better young G in the league, some of the front office personnel were grumbling that they passed on a star for a young player who has an attitude problem.

there's the difference. those guys had something to prove. Jackson and Drummond are already set financially in their early 20s. They're not going to play any harder. Watch KCP do the same once he gets his new contract. The Chauncey era Pistons were veteran guys. those are the kind of misfit toys you need.

Once again the Bulls front office proves why they are one of the worst in the League. Instead of having a great chance to really jumpstart their rebuild they make a deal that not only wont do that, it'll more than likely prolong such rebuild with dealing McDermott and giving up a draft pick for a average PG, average C, and an older version of McDermott. Well done Paxson and Forman, well done.
