OT: 2010-11 Chicago Bears = 2009-10 Iowa Hawkeyes

Seeing the Bears thus far this season I can't help but to think they are pegging off the charts on the luck scale. Just like the plot of luck given for the Big Ten teams last year and Iowa was by far the luckiest on there. I will say they did a decent job against the Cowboys but the Lions game....well we all know what happened there. Then, in this game with Cutler throwing Stanziballs all over the place but getting bailed out by penalties along with that last minute fumble rolling along the sidelines without going out of bounds. I can picture the Bears being a team where they're 7-9 and everyone is scratching their heads saying "but they started out 3-0 with a win against the Packers...."

Holy god that was painful to my eyes. I can't tell if that game was great or horrible. I'm leaning towards horrible. Mainly because I don't like the Bears.

the Bears aren't the favorite.  The Packers is still the favorite to win NFC North.  The Bears won one game thanks to a stupid rule and they won tonight due to the Packers shooting themselves in the foot.  Their only impressive win is Dallas Cowboys and I'm not sure if the Cowboys are as good as many think they are. 

The Vikes, despite a win against the Lions, still have a lot of problems.  Favre has health problems and he is struggling big time.  The Vikes doesn't have a go-to WR since Rice is still out for a while.  The offensive line aren't blocking anybody.  AP has to do it all by himself and if he keeps doing it, he'll get gassed at the end of the year.

I mean, yes, the Packers did shoot themselves in the foot, but let's take a closer look here. How many holding penalties were the result of Julius Peppers owning whoever was guarding him. Who is to say he doesn't get  a sack on some of those? A lot of the penalties were generated by the Bears play, in conjunction with the Packers lack of discipline.

However, I am the first in line to say I am still leary of the Bears. The O-Line is a turnstile and the Jay will still be Jay at some points this season.

I'm not sure a Chicago Bears strategy will be quite as effective.

As long as their retard of a coach learns not to play for field goals instead of touchdowns, and not punt the ball straight to Devin Hester on multiple occasions, they might eke out a playoff appearance. If they run McCarthy out of town, they have a chance at an actual championship.  That guy makes some of the stupidest, cowardly coaching decisions I've seen this side of Mike Singletary punting in the fourth quarter, down by a couple touchdowns, in the opponent's side of the field.  Mike McCarthy is absolutely pathetic.  His decision to let the clock run down to 8 seconds to allow Chicago to kick the game winner with virtually no time left was equally brilliant.  "Let the Bears walk in and try to tie the game with about 1:30 left, or let them kick a chip shot field goal with no shot at a drive or return?  Let's go ahead and go with the sure loss."  What an idiot.

He coached an awful game.

-Punting to Hester- sure he hasnt been himself lately...still stupid

-Challenging stupid plays. He always does it and its very frusterating. Wasted a timeout that they needed at the end there.

-And i could be wrong on this one....but why not let them score at the end? I was screaming at the television for them to do it and give Rodgers a minute plus to march down the field. Its better than leaving an extra point for one of the best kickers in the game to win it.

Related issue to your third point - why the hell was Chicago even trying to score?  They made the right strategic decision entirely by accident.  They were basically in a position to kick an extra point to win the game and leave 10 seconds on the clock, and instead put forth what appeared to be a serious effort to score a TD instead.  Stanford made the same decision against ND last year, and it made just as little sense.  20 yard FG to take the lead with under 10 ticks left > TD to take the lead with 1:30 left.  Duh.

I have to believe GB is still winning that division. Chicago could have, just as easily, lost all three games. As the topic starter said, pegging off the friggin charts as far as luck goes.

 Hahahaha so was I. I hate loving football (Green Bay and Michigan) so much because when they lose (and lose stupidly to boot) its such a downer on the rest of my night/day. After that game I was honestly so mad, and over a football game! But hell, I guess the best we can all do is embrace our love for our teams and hope to God they dont lose. Because when they do......IT SUCKS!

If you want to argue Green Bay's wounds were self-inflicted, go for it, but I'm not sure how much luck the Bears really benefited from.  That personal foul late in the game that gave GB a fresh set of downs was atrocious, while the pass interference that negated the INT the next drive was clear as day.  Not to say that Cutler doesn't throw up lame ducks every game, but the PI was pretty clear across the board.

When your QB completes multiple passes to the other team that end up coming back for various reasons, that is pretty lucky.  The hit on Cutler brought back a bad pick in his own end.  The PI call had to be made, but Cutler got bailed out again when throwing a terrible pass right to the defender.  I hate to see when a ball is so poorly thrown that the receiver is forced to try to run right through the defender and then the defender gets called for PI.  He was turning to look for the ball, but the pass was so bad that it drew the receiver into the defender.

Rodgers' immense talents are also being wasted by the Packers.

That's one way of looking at it.  Or you could look at it as the CB holding on to Bennett to prevent him from having a chance at even being near the ball.  He had his hips turned and it would have been completion if not for the holding.  That was an improvisation on the route, but no way does the pick happen if Bennett gets a chance to run the route.

17 penalties doesn't necessarily mean the Bears are lucky.  It likely means the Packers have serious issues in that department and gave away their shot at a game winning drive.  Remember, it was still tied when the fumble happened.

While I am not saying the Bears are going to win the division, calling drawing penalties on opponents as "lucky" is laughable in my opinion.  Peppers was an absolute beast in this game and drew 4-6 penalties on his own.  If he doesn't get held, he probably sacks Rodgers 2+ times and who knows what happens from there?  Fumble? Injury?  That is the reason they ARE PENALTIES!  If Cutler doesn't have a flying helmet into his chin, he probably doesn't make that bad decision.  If Bennett isn't getting raped, he likely get to that last INT and at least knocks it down, if not has a chance to catch it. 

The fact is that neither team played great, GB killed themselves will penalties, but most of them were cause by the Bears (Peppers caused number false starts just by him lining across the LOS- in addition to the holding).  GB is probably a better team but the Bears did what they needed to do to win.  Pretty much all there is too it...

I'd have to disagree and say that Rodgers talents (which even as a Bears fan, I agree, are immense) are one of the only things not being wasted by the Packers. The guy had over 300 yards and two TDs (one rushing). He single-handedly kept the Packers in the game by letting his arm drive the Pack downfield, overcoming repeated and dumb penalties.

On another note. The Packers played undisciplined football, the unnecessary roughness on the play where two Packers DBs were trying to strip the ball after the play was dead was incredibly dumb. As far as the offensive penalties go, Julius Peppers can take credit for half. He is just a machine. Can't stop. Won't stop.

Don't care.  A win is a win, especially against those cheese fuckers up north.  There were a lot of penalties - all but one (or maybe 2) were legit.  So Packers can complain all they want, but they lost this game on bad O-line play, bad secondary, and god aweful play calling by the coach.  This is not the first time teams have one this way, and it won't be the last.

if I remember correctly, the Iowa team from last year went to a major bowl and won.  If the NFL equivalent for Da Bears is attainable, then I'm all in for that.

I never witnessed any strange 'love of cheese' incidents in over 20 years of living there, aside from the hats people wear at the games. The only people who think WI=cheese are outsiders whose perception is based on drunken Lambeau fans. I've got a lot of names for Illinois people, but this board isn't the place for them.

but Green Bay made so many stupid mistakes when they had a chance to win. That roughing the passer call broke our back and is what really lost us the game because that was an interception. Stupid penalties cost us the game in this one but as a life long Packer's fan this one stings pretty bad.

We finally have an answer to the question "do the Bears have the worst offensive line in the NFL?"  They don't even have the worst line in their own freaking division -- the Packers line is flat-out awful.
