Al Alburquerque? As a Tiger fan I would feel real good about this series if I had any faith the bullpen could protect a 4 run lead in the 9th, unfortunately I don't.

OT: 10-14-12 Tigers vs Yankees. Who's your closer?
At this point Leyland just needs to say eff the establishment and let the situation determine which relievers to use.
I've never understood the idea of a closer. I get it if you have someone like Mariano Rivera, who is a near guarantee, but to replace someone who is pitching fine for a WORSE pitcher just because that is his established role?
mariano rivera over the last 4 years is near automatic with a save % of 92%, leading the majors. who is #2 on that list? Jose Valverde at 90%.
admittidly this season has been rocky but even in a "OMG HE IS TERRIBLE" year, he is still 13th best save % in MLB, and something like 6th or 7th in AL.
I understand the frustration with everbody because he is so animated and it can be frustrating sometime but even those automatic types like mariano rivera have blown saves in crunch time, like the 2004 playoffs he blew 3 saves.
not saying valverde is in the scope of rivera, but he is most certainly not a terrible closer, and anybody that thinks that is sadly mistaken. he is, statistically one of the best in the league.
STOP MAKING SENSE YOU'RE INTERFERING WITH MY RAGE.
I love Al, but I'd go with Dotel. He has experience closing in the past, Al is young and I would be nervous with the pressure on him.
A trim 54.00 ERA in the playoffs.
Alburquerque or Smyly. Stick with what's working.
I do think Valverde is getting a bad rap right now. He has been a pretty reliable closer for the past two seasons, but he is really struggling right now. Most closers struggle at some point, Valverde is just struggling at an extremely inopportune time. I think the Yankees benching A-Rod a couple days ago puts it in a bit of perspective. That said, I don't think we should let Valverde pitch the rest of the series.
Dotel
How would you do the last 3 innings? Al-Al, Benoit, and Dotel. I have little faith in Benoit either.
Hopefully Benoit and Valverde will pitch better in the comfy confines of Comerica park. I prefer not to see either today
Either Smyly or Dotel. I like Smyly and seeing as we may need a new closer next year so why not start now? On the other hand Dotel may be the safer option.
Leyland will stick with Valverde for no good reason
is the correct answer.
Wrong
Detroit Tigers' Jim Leyland: Jose Valverde is team's closer but will be out of that role indefinitely

Rafael Soriano.
Oops, I'm a Yankee fan
How does it feel, not having a soul?
He can't feel anything. He's a Yankees fan. His brain is numb.
It's actually really depressing and I hate this team so much. But I'm stuck with them. I've watched them my whole life
Yes, it is awful to be the Yankees and make the playoffs EVERY. SINGLE. YEAR.
I feel horrible for you.
Hey we missed the playoffs in 2008!
/s
But seriously, it's not as exciting being able to buy a championship every few years.
I'm a little jealous of all my Orioles friends, they had so much unexpected fun this season.
My adopted Nationals were a similar experience, and I liked that a hell of a lot better than the Yankee season
(eye roll)
Dude, don't be such a dick all the time. I know that's your thing, and it's probably not a great time living in Wyoming, but I'm not being an ass here.
Upvoted for being a reasonable Yankees fan, not obnoxiously arrogant like so many I've seen. Good point about the high expectations taking some of the fun out of being a fan.
Yankees are one of the only teams that can say that. The fans go because they expect to watch great baseball.
Tigers fans go not only for decent baseball, but to have a good time and be loyal.
The fact that this comes from a michigan fan is so fucking perfect.
uhhh...in what way? i understand the sarcasm, just not what you mean
he's a fan of the winningest foortball team in history. Might as well have ManU fan chime in on the matter as well. Hell, any Laker fans out there too? Celtics? Red Wings?
I went to this fucking school. Do you expect me not to be a fan? We aren't all in-staters bred as Michigan fans from birth. Get off your high horse.
please, tell more about your qualifications to be a Michgan fan, b/c I care about this more than life itself
The funniest thing about your little argument with Michigan Arrogance is that he wasn't even talking to you.
He was defending you by replying to David from Wyoming.
If you look at that little picture by his name, you will realize that you two are on the same side.
Oh hahaha I didn't really see how the posts lined up. I noticed the picture afterwards. Doesn't change the fact that he was being an ass.
I could give up 4 runs..easy.
Can we just have Verlander throw left handed? I think I'd take that over our bullpen.
I say the Tigers just get their bats going and build up a double digit lead by the 9th inning.
Nice glove safe by Sanchez
I'd like them to pitch AL more innings. I don't think it should be that you just have a 7th inning guy, 8th inning guy and 9th inning guy. If your "7th inning guy" tears it up, then keep him in.
I'm pretty sure the lions are about to get fucked on a controversial Calvin Johnson catch again
edit: Color me shocked. They actually got it right.
Anybody. At this point Don Kelly is a better pitcher than Valverde.
off topic: lions win 26-23 in overtime. another 4th quarter comeback
LIONS WIN!
Looks like the Eagles had Valverde closing for them--blowing a 10 point lead with <5 minutes left, then losing in OT.
Damn, seven strikeouts in 3 innings for Kuroda.
Yeah, but he didn't enjoy one moment of it.
Jason Hanson has gotta be mentioned as one of the greatest Lions of all time. May sound a bit silly seeing as hes a kicker, but I stick by the statement.
ccc
They're the closers of football.
Go with Al. Anyone is better than Valverde
Kuroda pitching a Perfect Game though four innings
I don't think it's a - PERFECT GAME- good idea to jinx - PERFECT GAME - him by mentioning - PERFECT GAME - the kind of performance - PERFECT GAME - that he is putting on display.

/Jinx
Yankees may be the only team in biesbol slower than the Tigers.
Who do you love to watch fail most? Lebron, A-Rod, or Vick?
Wow, real nice play by Cano extends the Perfect Game through 5 for Hiroki Kuroda.
Yes he is pitching a perfect game.
Aaaaaaand the score is tied. Whoopty-de-fucking do.
perfect game over
Peralta's defense has been tremendous this series... Saved us 2-3 runs in not even two games.
Hi, I'm having trouble with thefirstrow.eu stream...anyone have a stream that is working?
Thanks
http://www.vipboxsports.eu/baseball/88383/1/alcs-game-2-:-detroit-tigers...
this site is just as good
Thanks so much!
Tie broken 1-0 Tigers!
That your foot doesn't actually need to be on the bag when you're going for the first of two outs on a double play? Because when the ball got to 2nd, his foot wasn't on the base.
It's an unwritten rule. The ump gives you the benefit of the doubt
Adding on:
Given the fact that the baserunner is trying to break up the DP and will probably slide in hard, the umpires generally allow the fielder quite a bit of leeway. Otherwise you'd see a lot more middle infielders getting spiked/sprained.
Nice ass-crack on the Yankee's Bartman.
Tigers up 2-1 as force out by Delmon plates QB. Probably would have been an inning ending double play if Cano doesn't drop the ball while preparing to throw to first.
Ok. Sanchez has pitched 6 strong innings and has thrown 89 pitches. Maybe Sanchez can go 8, but I would have AA warming up
Tigers up 2-1? Do you have a feed from the future?
oops. Don't know where that came from.
It came from the future...obviously.
Yes
If we get the bats going and this team should win it all. Thats a big if though.
Starting pitching has been oustanding.
Great job by Sanchez. John Smoltz thinks that was the end of the line for Sanchez and we will see Phil Coke in bottom 8.
4-5 insurance runs would be a nice thing.
Bullpen will need 2 clean innings, ughhhhh
Kuroda starting to leave some pitches up. AJ might get him here
#smyly2012.
hm..that was a pretty terrible call.
a gift. I like recieving gifts though.
I dunno, couldn't really tell if Cano tagged him
He got him in the chest/stomach when Infante's hand was still on the dirt before his stretch to the bag
From my view it was INCONCLUSIVE
Wow that was bad. Clearly out. Hopefully this doesn't turn into more
Infante is not good on the base paths. In Oakland he seemed to come off the base every time he slid into a base. If guys hold their tag on him, he'd be out every time.
Avasail sounds like a character out of the Diablo video game series.
hell yes! 2-0
ump, it ain't enough.
Ahh crap. Well I guess we need to hope Valverde comes in to give us a chance since the umps are against us as well.
Someone has to make up for the announcers being Yankee honks. I'll take the umps if they want to be the ones to do it.
Announcers don't have any effect on the game. Umps do. Your argument is dumb.
It was intended to be tounge in cheek.
You seem to have forgotten that the tigers had a lead before that bad call. If the game ends with this score that call is meaning less.
My bad.
I mean I don't blame the umps for the game, just for the rest of the inning.
That said, our hitters wouldn't be able to hit a softball.
We take advantage of the gift. Hopefully the umps realize that 2 wrongs don't make a right!
The Yankees never get to benefit from poor umpiring!! Why is the world always against the Yankees?
/s
Only downside to this: now the pundits are gonna chalk up this win (fingers crossed) to a blown call, not Garcia's gem of a game, solid defense, and just enough offense.
Go on to win the World Series and no one will remember it. Win the series in 4 or 5 games, and it's going to be hard to argue it mattered.
if the Tigers were playing anyone BUT the Yankees, you're absolutely right.
Of course, in the scheme of it all it won't matter. But, hey: Steve Bartman.
Anyone but Valverde.
Yankees down 2-0. Yankees could be swept. I'll be honest, I want the Yankees to win this series. But, objectively, this cannot be possible with the way the Yankees have struggled to hit all postseason. Detroit could win all 4 games, or even send New York to a 3-0 hole in Game 3.
It's getting to the point where I think Yankee fans must believe they have no chance of scoring off anyone but Valverde. If Tigers win today, a sweep becomes very likely.
They were pretty much shut out Game 1 too until the late innings. Can't remember if all 4 runs happened in 9th.
You must have been shitfaced if you don't know what happened last night
MOAR
Don't give Cabby an extra swing
Classic Miguel swing for an RBI single 3-0!
there's miggy!
Blown call by the ump, then Swisher gives Cabby an extra swing by not making a tough but makeable play down the rightfield line, and the Tigers are up three.
Ahhh....replay is definitely needed. After all - anytime a call goes against the Yankees the rules need to be changed.
Immediately.
It's all TBS can talk about! Just like during our 12th inning rally last night - it was all about Jeter's injury and the albatross of A Rod.
Bases load up. Tigers can really pile on here.
Tigers with 5 straight baserunners now
If this game ends 3-0?, do the Yankees still "get screwed?" I know a 1-0 game is different than a 3-0 game and how they would play the 8th and 9th, but it's hard for me to think a team got screwed when they were losing and can't scored any more runs.
There's no way really to know. 3-0 as opposed to 1-0 has more of an effect on the use of pinch-hitters/pinch-runners since there's more ground to make up.
That said, the way they're playing, they cannot blame the umps
Exactly. They can't score. This game was over at 1-0.... Unless Leyland brings in Valverde (in which case he better stay in NY).
Girardi (well, whoever is implmenting the strategy as he was ejected) is really doing the most fair thing you can do for your pitching staff - everybody gets to face one batter.
if Young hits a Grand Slam, Leyland might want to give Valverde a chance
I'm a Tigers fans, but that Ump must be blind. I hate missed calls because the call overshadows everything else.
Play never should have happened. What the hell was Infante doing rounding so far off the base at Second, and at such a leisurely pace in a 1-0 game?
Does anybody else have a pit in their stomach now that our starter is out?
I miss the FSD crew. Hawk Harrelson is pissing me off. It is obvious they are openly rooting for the Yankees.
and I thought it was a YES network broadcast.
TBS: Ernie Johnson, Ron Darling & John Smoltz; Reporter: Craig Sager
TBS On Deck: Host: Matt Weiner; Analysts: Cal Ripken, Jr., Dennis Eckersley & David Wells

Phillis Coke!
Bring back the Kenny P look brah!
I see ya Phil!
3 outs left. It's not like the 9th inning has been dramatic for us or anything
Yankee stadium is very quiet right now. Did anyone hear what the fan yelled to Fielder after Avila caught the foul pop? "Fielder I hate you"?
I believe it was "fielder almost ate you"
It looks like the stadium is clearing out. Knowing Yankee fans in the area, their tears make me feel warm inside.
Honestly, though, after that blown call against Infante I think everyone realized it just wasn't going to happen for this team.
Don't they know Benoit is coming in to pitch the 9th?
Oh. Coke.
This game could end at 10-0 and the dumbass announcers will still be crying their eyes out over the missed call. Really pissing me off.
Why TBS makes no apologies over rooting for the Yankees....Arbitron market size

watching a YES broadcast. It would have the same bia but probably some good info on the yankees we aren't getting from TBS.
Exactly. We all now Hawk's aversion to the tigers. This broadcast is just infuriating.
From now on, I will always think that TBS is, for the benefit of the MLB, laying the ground rules for the further graduated implementation of replay because of sheer market size, not necessarily because one team is playing great baseball.
Money talks.
What do you think will happen to their ratings if the Tigers win? I've got 15MM reasons why they REALLY want the Yankees to win this.
That looks about right, but let's say it was Boston-Detroit (pretty close in terms of market size). My guess is that they'd be higher on Boston than Detroit. I think there is more a favoritism for the coastal teams than the middle save for Chicago and St. Louis.
A little surprised Detroit's market size is less than 4M. Haven't been in the state for about 5 years, but I swear it was around 4.5M not that long ago.
Benoit warming up, middle of the lineup due for the Yankees
Benoit? I hope the leash is short
please no 9th inning drama....
we get to end games by chanting "let's do some Coke".
Fuck you Lamont, put the phone away
a coffee.
Base hit. The YAnkees are barely alive.
Yes!!!!
doesn't make me feel any better about closing out games but still impressive
Yeah baby!
Side note: Swisher has gotta be the biggest tool in baseball. Even after an embarassing loss he has a stupiid smirk on his face.
It's the 'I'm pulling 10 million dollars this year no matter what way this series goes' smirk.
I wouldn't read too much into his facial expression. I heard people say the same thing about Denard, especially regarding the ND game this year. I don't even want to catalog the stupid shit I heard.
His whole track record contributes to his tool status.
EDIT: Referring to Swisher, obviously.
If I were shtooping Kate Upton, I know I would. Why bother trying to hide it?
Best sports weekend ever?!?!?
But close.
Ohio won.
except dawson news
tigers win! excellent weekend.
With this win, the Tigers are now 49-49 all-time in the MLB Playoffs. They now have a winning record in the ALCS at 12-11.
So if the Yankees can't touch Fister or Sanchez, what is going to happen when Verlander takes the hill?
Curt Menafee needs to pay more attention.
The line was Yankees +3, and he still thought the Yankees had a chance at a FG.
ONE MORE
edit: stupid gateway timeout. comment never got sent.
Coke will NEVER make it as a closer in this league. He didnt preen, strut or dance around the mound, he forget to make little pistols with his fingers after every strike and I don't think he remembered to kiss the ball once.
All he did was get people out. What's the point of that?
Smyly was all business last night too. It's like they don't even get coached.
<iframe width="420" height="315" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/NPb291JdQwA" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>
make me mad we can never upvote past 5
I think game 3 is gonna be another grinder. We haven't hit Hughes too well in the past.
I'm pretty confident, unless JV gets screwed by a rain shortened game
God I hope not. I have tickets and don't want to mess around with the weather shortening my first playoff exprience.
great for weather.
61 sunny on Tues, 68 sunny Wed with a slight chance over evening showers, probably in the 50's for gametime but should stay dry. better chance for showers on Thurs afternoons game.
My closer is ANYONE BUT VALVERDE FERGODSAKES!!!!!
