OT: 10-14-12 Tigers vs Yankees. Who's your closer?

Al Alburquerque? As a Tiger fan I would feel real good about this series if I had any faith the bullpen could protect a 4 run lead in the 9th, unfortunately I don't.

I've never understood the

I've never understood the idea of a closer.  I get it if you have someone like Mariano Rivera, who is a near guarantee, but to replace someone who is pitching fine for a WORSE pitcher just because that is his established role?

you are right...

mariano rivera over the last 4 years is near automatic with a save % of 92%, leading the majors. who is #2 on that list? Jose Valverde at 90%.

admittidly this season has been rocky but even in a "OMG HE IS TERRIBLE" year, he is still 13th best save % in MLB, and something like 6th or 7th in AL.

I understand the frustration with everbody because he is so animated and it can be frustrating sometime but even those automatic types like mariano rivera have blown saves in crunch time, like the 2004 playoffs he blew 3 saves.

not saying valverde is in the scope of rivera, but he is most certainly not a terrible closer, and anybody that thinks that is sadly mistaken. he is, statistically one of the best in the league.

Dotel

I love Al, but I'd go with Dotel. He has experience closing in the past, Al is young and I would be nervous with the pressure on him.

Alburquerque or Smyly. Stick

Alburquerque or Smyly. Stick with what's working.

I do think Valverde is getting a bad rap right now. He has been a pretty reliable closer for the past two seasons, but he is really struggling right now. Most closers struggle at some point, Valverde is just struggling at an extremely inopportune time. I think the Yankees benching A-Rod a couple days ago puts it in a bit of perspective. That said, I don't think we should let Valverde pitch the rest of the series.

How would you do the last 3

How would you do the last 3 innings? Al-Al, Benoit, and Dotel. I have little faith in Benoit either.

Hopefully Benoit and Valverde will pitch better in the comfy confines of Comerica park. I prefer not to see either today

Either Smyly or Dotel.  I

Either Smyly or Dotel.  I like Smyly and seeing as we may need a new closer next year so why not start now?  On the other hand Dotel may be the safer option.

Hey we missed the playoffs in 2008!

But seriously, it's not as exciting being able to buy a championship every few years.

I'm a little jealous of all my Orioles friends, they had so much unexpected fun this season.

My adopted Nationals were a similar experience, and I liked that a hell of a lot better than the Yankee season

Exactly.

Yankees are one of the only teams that can say that. The fans go because they expect to watch great baseball.

Tigers fans go not only for decent baseball, but to have a good time and be loyal.

The funniest thing about your little argument with Michigan Arrogance is that he wasn't even talking to you.

JV?

Can we just have Verlander throw left handed? I think I'd take that over our bullpen.

I say the Tigers just get their bats going and build up a double digit lead by the 9th inning.

I'd like them to pitch AL more innings.  I don't think it should be that you just have a 7th inning guy, 8th inning guy and 9th inning guy.  If your "7th inning guy" tears it up, then keep him in.

Jason Hanson has gotta be mentioned as one of the greatest Lions of all time.  May sound a bit silly seeing as hes a kicker, but I stick by the statement.

Is it just one of those conventions of baseball

That your foot doesn't actually need to be on the bag when you're going for the first of two outs on a double play? Because when the ball got to 2nd, his foot wasn't on the base.

Yes

Adding on:

Given the fact that the baserunner is trying to break up the DP and will probably slide in hard, the umpires generally allow the fielder quite a bit of leeway. Otherwise you'd see a lot more middle infielders getting spiked/sprained.

Tigers up 2-1 as force out by Delmon plates QB. Probably would have been an inning ending double play if Cano doesn't drop the ball while preparing to throw to first.

Ok. Sanchez has pitched 6 strong innings and has thrown 89 pitches. Maybe Sanchez can go 8, but I would have AA warming up

Only downside to this: now the pundits are gonna chalk up this win (fingers crossed) to a blown call, not Garcia's gem of a game, solid defense, and just enough offense.

Anyone but Valverde.  Yankees

Anyone but Valverde.

Yankees down 2-0. Yankees could be swept. I'll be honest, I want the Yankees to win this series. But, objectively, this cannot be possible with the way the Yankees have struggled to hit all postseason. Detroit could win all 4 games, or even send New York to a 3-0 hole in Game 3.

If this game ends 3-0?, do

If this game ends 3-0?, do the Yankees still "get screwed?" I know a 1-0 game is different than a 3-0 game and how they would play the 8th and 9th, but it's hard for me to think a team got screwed when they were losing and can't scored any more runs.

There's no way really to

There's no way really to know. 3-0 as opposed to 1-0 has more of an effect on the use of pinch-hitters/pinch-runners since there's more ground to make up.

That said, the way they're playing, they cannot blame the umps

Exactly. They can't score.

Exactly. They can't score. This game was over at 1-0.... Unless Leyland brings in Valverde (in which case he better stay in NY).

One Pitcher, One Batter...

Girardi (well, whoever is implmenting the strategy as he was ejected) is really doing the most fair thing you can do for your pitching staff - everybody gets to face one batter.

That was one of the worst calls I have seen.

I'm a Tigers fans, but that Ump must be blind. I hate missed calls because the call overshadows everything else.

Play never should have happened. What the hell was Infante doing rounding so far off the base at Second, and at such a leisurely pace in a 1-0 game?

It looks like the stadium is clearing out.  Knowing Yankee fans in the area, their tears make me feel warm inside.

Honestly, though, after that blown call against Infante I think everyone realized it just wasn't going to happen for this team.

Interesting Stats...

From now on, I will always think that TBS is, for the benefit of the MLB, laying the ground rules for the further graduated implementation of replay because of sheer market size, not necessarily because one team is playing great baseball.

That looks about right, but

That looks about right, but let's say it was Boston-Detroit (pretty close in terms of market size).  My guess is that they'd be higher on Boston than Detroit.  I think there is more a favoritism for the coastal teams than the middle save for Chicago and St. Louis.

A little surprised Detroit's market size is less than 4M.  Haven't been in the state for about 5 years, but I swear it was around 4.5M not that long ago.

Coke will NEVER make it as a

Coke will NEVER make it as a closer in this league.  He didnt preen, strut or dance around the mound, he forget to make little pistols with his fingers after every strike and I don't think he remembered to kiss the ball once.

All he did was get people out.  What's the point of that?
