OSU TE Marcus Baugh Suspended

Submitted by Zone Left on

It's officially the offseason. The top story on the CBS Eye on College Football blog is about Marcus Baugh getting an MIP, which is apparently his second.

I posted just to put this gem in from an old Simpsons:

Ned Flanders: Pardon me, neighbourinos. Some of our boys are lost in your town. You wouldn't have happened to see them, by any chance?

Shelbyvillian #1: Sounds like Springfield's got a discipline problem.

Shelbyvillian #2: Maybe that's why we beat them at football nearly half the time.

A college kid who plays for a major university, one that has not had the cleanest of records with regards to discipline over the last few years and has already had one incident on his record.  If it was me or if I was his coach, I'd be thinking I better not let this happen again.  Especially in this day and age of news reporting and social media.  For a football player at osu, yes...this is a disturbing trend.  I'd say the same if it were someone from UM or any other school.

This reminds me of the story about Woody Hayes and one of his players (Schlicter I think). The player had a serious drinking problem so Woody took him to a brewery one evening and said: "Look at this son, do you think you can possibly drink all this beer?" The reply was "No coach, but I sure got 'em working overtime."

I drank before turning 21. I never got caught or a ticket. Was his offense major? No. In fact, IMO it's much less serious than DUIs. However, he did break the law and get caught. A suspension is warranted, but not a huge long one. Don't want to get suspended? Don't get an MIP. Don't want an MIP? either dont drink - or dont get caught.

I got an MIP in college, and it was pure bad luck. If you ranked every night of drinking on a scale of most likely to get an MIP, that night would have been outside the top 50. It's typically a wrong place, wrong time type thing. This is a non-issue.

I agree, this really isn't a big deal to me. Hell, I remember half the girls in my grade in high school would drive out to 2A or Lansing every weekend to get drunk as soon as they got their licenses. Still, once you've been caught you should probably be more careful.

that's all I was trying to say.  Plus, I'm thinking the girls in your grade in high school weren't responsible to a team or a program that is as high profile as osu.  My point being that he needs to go above and beyond to stay out of trouble, and as I mentioned above...I'm sensing a trend.  And not that it isn't stupid to be in trouble for something we've all done before, but I believe his situation to be different from ours.

...if he loses his scholarship over this.  That said, I don't mean to minimize the harm of drinking beer when you're 19 or 20 or whatever he is.  It's very important to wait until you're 21, when you can then legally drink yourself into oblivion.

Urban Meyer (shaking finger): "Listen, if you don't straighten up you'll drink yourself right off the team. Now go get in there."

I stopped being judgemental on this when I realized that we're no better.  No point in pointing fingers now that will just be pointing right back at us.  Personally I am of the opinion if you do this, you're off the team.  Hoke won't do that, so no point in expecting it of other schools.  Though few are as bold as MSU and pick their playeres up from the slammer so they can make a noon game.

That's called life and responsibility.  If they don't learn it in college or (apparently) as a child, they just end up being problems later in life.  Not saying it's a 1 to 1 comparison or proven methodology, but honestly, these kids are the face of these organizations and they should be held to a higher standard.

I don't know much about this guy's behavior outside of these two MIPs, but if that's it then kicking him out of school is outrageous. Yes, kids should learn accountability, but you don't kick a kid out of college for every little incident he has. You're avatar suggests you're a parent - are you that harsh every time your kids step out of line?

Kicking someone off the team over an MIP is idiotic. Underage drinking is, honestly, not that big a deal, and MIP's are usually just bad luck (walking home the wrong way, going to the wrong party that ends up being busted, etc). Unless you can say with certainty that that everyone that drinks in college is a bad person, you can't fault him for this.

Thought Hoke took the easy way out not suspending Lewan for his stupid cheap shot behavior against Sparty. We blasted Dantonio for not punishing Gholston a few years ago. I was disappointed that we lowered the bar. Lewan was a captain and a 5th year senior. Send a message...he didn't do it and thus we are no better than the others.

After losing this senior class and juniors Bradley Roby and Ryan Shazier, the Buckeyes have 61 scholarship players accounted for. That means 21 spots are currently open. Ohio State has 22 oral commitments for the Class of 2014 with National Signing Day looming on Feb. 5. - from the Plain-Dealer story

It would be a shame if Baugh's behavior made him "the odd man out" here, but the potential is there that he could be on the short end of scholarship math if Meyer saw fit right now.

Meh - ain't like he murdered someone.  I mean everyone kills people, murders people, steals from you, steals from me, whatever. I think that people need a second chance.
