I'm throwing the Bullshit flag.

"Six out of the seven calls were for one minute or less and the other was a two minute call or less," the school reported, according to The Plain Dealer. "The coaches were unaware that the calls had taken place until the recruiting software flagged the calls in April of 2013. The inadvertent calls were not made through the recruiting software application on the coaches' phones and therefore, the coaches were unaware that the calls had occurred until the Compliance Office cross referenced the coaches' phone bills with the recruiting information in the software.

"Notably, the review did not find evidence of attempts to evade the phone call legislation by receiving an immediate return call from a recruit."

Devil's advocate here: My mother in law has what some consider a "smart phone" and has butt dialed me no less than 5 times over the past year. Now, this is just to point out that a very dumb person can butt dial from a smart phone. That said,  7 calls over the course of a season? Were there equally as many butt dials to other contacts besides recruits? Doubtful.

My guess is, "*Ring-ring*-Hey, (high school recruit #19) go call this number, XXX-XXX-XXXX (probably a Trac-phone) from your neighbor's house. I know a guy who does some sick ink around the greater Columbus area. Let's chat about it...*Click*"

"Therefore"??? The coaches' brains are hardwired to the recruiting software application so they aren't capable of being aware of anything that doesn't go through it?

The Lantern (OSU's paper) ran a story last week when the count was not quite as high, but it is enough to provide some insight into the world of "the minor violation", if you are interested - LINK. They basically run an odd range from a coach using smokeless tobacco at an event to athletes participating in voluntary workouts while not enrolled at OSU to a rash of impermissible phone calls, as noted in the ESPN article.

Gene Smith, of course, has something to say about the number:

“On an annual basis, we have about 40 (violations),” Smith said. “It ranges in that area we’re sitting at. In that 40 range is where we always hang."

It's better to report violations as opposed to saying that there's no violations because NCAA will worry that you have something to hide.

I'm sure Michigan report tons of minor violations every year but it's not reported by the news outlet. OSU is no different than any other schools.

I can't decide to file this article under "Lies, Damn Lies, and the Lying Liars who do nothing but Lie", or "Shit that comes as completely no surprise to me".

Both seem pretty appropo.

Well they, like many coaches, do shit they're not supposed to but know they are secondary violations, which usually don't amount to anything. I think what the NCAA should start doing is counting the secondary violations and if a school makes so many, it should turn into a major violation. Something has to be done about the amount of secondary violations; not just for Ohio, but all schools. What's the point in having these rules for things deemed as secondary violations if nothing comes out of them?

Other than the short answer of "it's the NCAA, duh." I don't see how you could have a system where the sames school consistently reports 40+ minor violations and there is no cumulative affect leading to punishment.

It's like investing money. Would you rather invest one dollar a day for 1,000 days or wait three years to invest $1000 dollars? In OSU's case, they do both.

that is on Probation get away with violating the rules without repercussion.

The very defintion of probation would preclude this.

Probation: Probation is a period of supervision over an offender.

i'm guessing that most schools have at least some minor violations every year, even our beloved school.   any mgoblogger out there have an idea of the parameters of ours or, say, the 'average' D-1 school's problems in this regard?

There were days where I would have really gotten worked up about stuff like this. Those days are over.

It's time for an whole paradigm shift on NCAA athletics.

If it's 40 "minor" violations than the word minor shouldn't apply, it's a big joke.

We get sited for over-practicing and other schools are running rampant with a slap on the wrist.

NCAA is a big fat joke!
