OSU recruit Jamel Turner shot multiple times

Submitted by RedGreene on

This is the second time he's been shot since April.

"Police found 17-year-old Tracy Banks dead from multiple gunshot wounds inside a house on Manchester Street.  Police also found 18-year-old Jamel Turner shot mutliple times lying by a stop sign at the corner of Manchester and Oakwood.  Turner is an Ohio State Football recruit."

This is fucked up. Makes you wonder if its Turner thats the problem or the environment.

OSUs going to have to make a decision to either get him on campus ASAP so hopefully all this bullshit ends or cut ties. I really don't blame them either way.

Condolences to the young girls family.

If it's any indication, usually these types of shootings are not random. Usually they are driven by money (or drugs), jealousy, or purely gang related.

I've spent much of my life in Detroit and now Inkster, two notoriously "bad" areas (at least from an outsider's perspective). And I can safely say, as long as you don't mess with the wrong people, you are pretty damn safe.

What I can safely say is it does happen to random people from time to time. I don't know Jamal Turner nor am I familiar with where he lives, but as a Dr. I have seen many people who have been in the wrong place at the wrong time and had bad things happen.

It isn't always as simple as "if I don't associate with bad people, bad things won't happen to me."

well a SUBURB 5 minutes from Youngstown.  This happened on the westside of Youngstown, and it has traditionally been the "safe" side of town.  At one point there wasn't a murder on the west side for over 5 years.  The south and east sides are notorious for being a place you'd rather not be when it's dark.

That said, the westside has grown more dangerous in the last decade.  As for Mr. Turner, he went to a small catholic school, Ursuline, through his junior year of high school.  After his team won the state title, his name kept being brought up as a transfer candidate and that Ursuline no longer wanted him there.   The kid was a complete stud for them at DE and TE, so people knew something was up.  Word was that he wanted to transfer to Warren Harding (home of DJ Williamson, Davion Rogers, Mario Manningham, P. Burgess, etc...), however they didn't want anything to do with him either.  So he went to Fork Union Military School in Virginia.

If any of you remember the story, he left there in March and was involved in a shooting on I-680 which is the interstate that runs directly through Youngstown.  Apparently someone drove next to the car he was in and shot him and the guy driving.  Neither was seriously hurt, but police found drugs in the car.

Now this...it's too bad, this kid can't get his head on straight.

This is incredibly sad. There was no info regarding his condition in the link, but if someone comes across his prognosis somewhere, please post. It's shocking this is the second time in the span of a few months that he's been shot. Hail2Mich's Demar Dorsey comparison above completely misses the point, but if there is one way the two are similar it's that Jamel would seemingly also benefit from a move far far from home.

This is an incredibly horrible tragedy and I hope for this kids sake that he gets through this and makes it to Columbus just to withdraw himself from these situations.  Situations like this make you put aside your alliances to whatever school and just hope the best for this young man.  It also really irks me that the the author of this story bothers to mention that the kid was a recruit to Ohio State.  That makes no difference and should not be considered at all when putting in perspective what has happened.  My condolences go out to the family of the young woman who was murdered and to the family of Mr. Turner.  May he get through this and becaome a great indivdual.

It does make a difference that he is an OSU recruit. Among other things, the story wouldn't have been posted here if not for that factor. Part of complete reporting of a story is informing people of the identity of individuals involved, whether a person is an actor, athlete or politician. If the reporter had left out that information people would be bitching about that - and it would be justified.

damn, hope Mr. Turner is alright, and I will pray he has a safe recovery.

All my thoughts, prayers, and condolences go out to the family of the young lady.

That sucks. I'm not going to speculate on the circumstances, but it just plain sucks. I thought I moved into a slightly rough neighborhood out of the suburbs, but I can't imagine living somewhere where this sort of thing is relatively commonplace.

Second time getting shot? That's just rediculous. I hope he recovers fast and gets to Columbus. Hopefully there he won't be in danger of being killed.

Best wishes Turner. Get well quick. We can't beat you on the field unless you're on it.

I grew up in a fairly rough area. I did my share of dirt, but when push comes to shove, never did anything to warrant this type of violence against me.  I can understand the nature vs nurture arguement many people are quick to make, but its not that simple.  If anyone here has consistently watched the local (detroit) news for the last few years, you have seen my bedroom window in the background of "local teen gets shot" stories.  I would never assume this kid was free of all blame, but many youths cannot or will not escape their upbringing. This story saddens me to no end, and is an unfortunate reality in the quest to unearth the greatest athletes possible.

I was born and raised in Flint which is one of the three most dangerous cities in Michigan and it is sad to see a kid with a bright future get killed. My condolences goes out to the victims family.

Ugh. It's enough to make a man with great intestinal fortitude barf up his own stomach, thereby flipping it inside-out while still tethered to an also inside-out umbilical esophagus.

Even when I was an undergrad, I don't think I ever saw 3:23am on the street. Maybe in a bedroom those times I got lucky and hooked up, but never on the street.

I want to apologize for the Dorsey comment I made yesterday. Comparing the two wasn't right, especially at a time like this. I still believe that there was a chance that this wasn't just a random shooting where he was at the wrong place at the wrong time, because of his past, but this is still very sad. RIP Mr. Turner. He had a great future ahead of him and it was taken away before he had a chance. Hopefully OSU will do something in his honor.

I went to the home websites connected to the TV newslinks above. Both are still reporting Turner is in critical condition. One said they updated the story 26 minutes ago.

a 17 year old girl w/ him died at the scene.   As mentioned above, he was shot up in April with guns and drugs found in the car he was in.  After he was dismissed from the bball team at Youngstown Ursiline and could no longer play sports, Tress helped steer him into Fork Union military academy in Virginia.  He was back in Youngstown after leaving that school under unknown circumstances.  I grew up in Detroit - so many people in bad circumstances with much less hope of escaping. Turner's future was bright, but looks like he refused to embrace the gifts he was being given.

Turner is still alive and expected to pull through.  That said, word is that he was shot 7 times including in the neck and in his lung.

you put the whole OSU-Michigan thing aside and sit and reflect for a moment. When I think that this kid was a middle schooler when i was a senior in HS back in 2005, it hits home even more. This is a young man with his whole life ahead of him and someone tried to take it from home. If I'm not mistaken, he has what is 5 star talent. But now, to hell with football. I just hope the kid is alive (I don't know because of rumors I saw above) and that if he is, he makes a full recovery and can play football again.

Word from Bucknuts is that he's still clinging to life and will never play football again. What was said for the shooter's motivation was that he (the shooter) was a jealous ex-boyfriend of the girl whom Turner was with.
