OSU hates Illinois?

Submitted by Blazefire on

Perhaps you can answer this question for me. I'm utterly confused. Why did a delivery man just show up in OSU gear, including a shirt that said, "To Do List: Beat M; Beat I", Where M is a Michigan M and I is an Illini I. Where's that hate coming from? I didn't know Illinois mattered that much to OSU.

Well, they do play for a wooden turtle called the IlliBuck.  Illinois was OSU's annual last-week opponent back when we were playing Chicago.  I was unaware that the hostility continued beyond 1935, however.

I think there was an odd stretch in the '90s where Illinois was killing OSU (to the tune, honestly, of five straight wins).  Maybe they're still smarting from that.

That's probably it.  John Cooper struggled against Illinois. Even St. Tressel has lost to them twice.  Overall, the series is almost dead even the last 20 meetings...

1988: Illinois-31 OSU-12

1989: Illinois-34 OSU-14

1990: Illinois-31 OSU-20

1991: Illinois-10 OSU-7

1992: Illinois-18 OSU-16

1993: OSU-20 Illinois-12

1994: Illinois-24 OSU-10

1995: OSU-41 Illinois-3

1996: OSU-48 Illinois-0

1997: OSU-41 Illinois-6

1998: OSU-41 Illinois-0

1999: Illinois-46 OSU-20

2000: OSU-24 Illinois-21

2001: Illinois-34 OSU-22

2002: OSU-23 Illinois-16

2003/04 - did not play

2005: OSU-40 Illinois-2

I've always considered Illinois fans the second worst fanbase in the Big Ten.  If they're just as obnoxious when they host OSU as they are when they host us, then I can see how OSU would look forward to beating them.

I don't know.  Just a guess.  If I'm right, it's pretty hypocritical considering the way opposing fans get treated in Columbus.

Illini fans really seem to hate Michigan.  Adding fuel to that fire is the fact that no Michigan fan would probably even consider UI to be in their top-10 of rivals.

Never have I seen more "Muck Fichigan" (or the ultra-classy "Fuck Michigan") shirts in all my life.  Of course, I've never been to the 'Shoe, but the tailgates around Memorial Stadium sure were packed with 'em.

Illinois fans are absolute fucking jackbags.   They have never won fucking ANYTHING at that school, but nevertheless, when they come within a snowball's chance in hell of a .500 team, they act like they are a dynasty of the highest order.    And you don't hear a peep out of those shitheads when their teams suck, per usual.

Can you tell I spent a decade in Chicago?  I hate U of Illinois.   Anything in IL south of I-80 is utterly worthless.

Last night was watching Hard Knocks with a buddy.  They are talking about Nick Mangold's new contract and one of the jet coaches says glad to see the money didn't go to his head.  My buddy "he went to OSU nothing has ever gone to his head."  Remember who we are dealing with here.

perhaps the I was the first person pronoun he used instead of me (bad grammar) and after beating M he had to remember to beat himself, so had it printed on a t-shirt?

As aforementioned, the battle for the Illibuck would be the only thing I can think of.  Maybe it is a sport specific rivalry? Like women's shot put or something?

But they've long had a rivalry.  I think it shows up more in basketball than football, but after us, they probably both hate each other second most.
