OSU Fball New Starters 2016

Submitted by alum96 on

A cursory glance at the OSU depth chart shows OSU 2016 is going to look a lot like UM 2017 in terms of major losses on the lines, wide receiver corps, and defense in total -  but (most likely) bringing back a good QB*.

http://www.ourlads.com/ncaa-football-depth-charts/depth-chart/ohio-stat…

*Unless it's Taysom Hill - Discuss man.

OSU has 9 potential EE from the starting ranks (of 22!) - 4 have chosen to leave, 4 TBD, 1 returning. (Not counting Cardale as a starter - he was #10)

--------------------------------

You can still expect OSU - now recruiting almost as well as Bama the past 4 years - to be a very talented squad, especially come November after 3 months of  playing together but this certainly makes that trip to Oklahoma ominous and reduces margin for error in many other games esp in October when the team is still finding itsself.  It's the right year for a senior heavy Michigan to go into Columbus and end years of anguish. It's a shame Bowling Green graduated its QB because that one had upset alert written all over it.

Bolding all the guys that will be gone or projected to be:

Offense

  • WR - Michael Thomas (still deciding but being mocked as the 2nd best WR in most draft boards and very underutilized in that offense)
  • WR - Jalin Marshall (still deciding, seems like it would do a lot of good to return but many of his friends from his class are leaving en masse so might help him go)
  • ATH - Braxton Miller
  • QB - JT Barnett
  • RB - Zeke (EE)
  • LT - Taylor Decker
  • LG - Billy Price
  • C - Jake Boren
  • RG - Pat Elfein
  • RT - Chase Farris
  • TE - Nick Varnett

At best it appears OSU will return 4 guys on offense - and if Marshall leaves, 3.  QB and 2 guards.

Defense

  • DE - Joey Bosa (EE)
  • DT - Tommy Schutt
  • DT - Joel Hale
  • DE - Tyquan Lewis
  • LB - Joshua Perry
  • LB - Raekwon McMillan
  • LB - Darron Lee (EE)
  • CB - Gareon Conley
  • S - Vonn Bell (potential late 1st/mid 2nd round pick - seems likely to go)
  • S - Tyvis Powell (EE)
  • CB - Eli Apple (probably could go but not as obvious as Bell - more like a 3rd/4th roundish guy)

At best, OSU would retain 5 guys if both Bell and Apple stay.  Probability says Bell at least goes and it would not be a surprise to see both go.  That would leave 3 returning starters - 1 at each of the 3 levels of the defense.

Overall there is a chance only 6 starters return as a floor.  Best case of 10 would make it one of the least experienced (in terms of starters returning) teams in nation.  Of course guys like Hubbard could be quasi starters and should move in without missing a beat but in general it's the year to make hay vs OSU.

with Samuel, Weber, and incoming mccall, and Barett at qb, the offense won't have any problem scoring points. especially if Marshall comes back. don't forget about dontre Wilson. Ohio state is going to be a force. Michigan has to be nearly flawless to beat them in Columbus next year. all depends on qb play for Michigan.

Although MSU's backups did a solid job in a poor elements game they will really miss Conner Cook. When healthy he was a solid QB. When I watched him throwing at their spring practice I thought he was far and away the best pocket passer in the B1G. Much more polished than by Jones or Barrett and just seemed much more savvy than Shane looked at our Spring practices/game.

At this point, Michigan State is a 10-win team pretty much every year until further notice.  You'd think after hitting 10 wins in 5 of the last 6 seasons, people would understand this.

Sure, they lose Cook and some other pieces, but its been that way the last several years.  Every year its always "oh, they lose too much from the defense" or "they've lost a stud RB" or "they've lost Narduzzi" or whatever. The system is in place, and they just reload and replace and wins 10 games again. They're not going anywhere.

He also said MSU is a 10-win team until further notice.  And that while they lose Cook, it's been that way for several year, when it hasn't.  They've only lost their starting QB once in those last 6 seasons. See if you can spot a potentially favorable trend...

2010 - 11-2 - Cousins

2011 - 11-2 - Cousins (graduated, drafted rd. 4)

2012 - 7-6 - Maxwell/Cook

2013 - 13-1 - Cook

2014 - 11-2 - Cook

2015 - 12-2 - Cook (graduated, drafted rd.1-3?)

2016 - ?-? - O'Connor/Terry?

Sparty is replacing it's players with more highly recruited versions.  The guys today are 1/2 to 1 star high rated on average than the guys coming in 4 years ago.

I don't see MSU winning less than 9 games.  They have ND, OSU and UM as potential to probable losses, they should beat everyone else somewhat handily + a BTCG or bowl game.

Why does everyone around here think "next year" is the one where MSU finally takes the step back? Every year they lose x person or y group or z coach, and they just get stronger every year.

I thought no they're a 10 win team every year until shown otherwise or Dantonio steps down, which it doesn't look like he plans to do anytime soon.

They are losing too much and their strength of schedule is getting way harder now that we are finally back on track.  Next year, I expect them to drop at least 3 of @ Notre Dame, vs. Wisconsin, vs. UM, and vs. Ohio State.  If they do that and win their other games (including a bowl), they get to 10 wins.  That's doable, especially with good coaches.  Not inevitable, but doable.

I hope they find ways to win in mediocre fashion. Enjoyable as it would be, your scenario kinda sounds like the perfect narrative for the Buckeyes to be able to claim the status of "Young, upstart underdogs eventually finding themselves" going into The Game. Of course, "Young team defying expectations, eventually runs into veteran wall" does sound fun!

I think the perfect storm is brewing for Michigan to win at both MSU and OSU in 2016. Sure, it's only Harbaugh's second year, and though we have a talented group we aren't the most talented etc, but both MSU and OSU will be losing a lot of players. Michigan is returning numerous players, and I'm very confident that Harbaugh and his staff can develop the young guys. MSU peaked this season, and OSU's season to win should have been this year. With Michigan clearly on the up and up, I'm a lot more optimistic about next year than I was about this year in January 2015.

Seriously. 2/3 of their content is written like a MSM fluff piece, except it reads like it was written by high school students. And their most popular comments are always something like "scUM sux lulz." On the mgoboard if you criticize one of our rivals there are usually about ten users jumping to their defense.

but Miller, Elliot, Barret, Thomas and even Marshal is a lot of guys to go. That is a ship ton of playing time/experience and juking ability. I think it's safe to say their offense cant be as lethal as even the last 3 years. Here's to hoping because I say this stuff every year.

It's nice that I'm starting to not care about OSU's roster because I like the one we have better. They can field whoever they want to, but have Harbaugh and his merry band of wolverines. I'll gladly take that.

Outside of LB, I think our talent is comparable to Ohio State's talent. After the promising 2013 season ended in bitter disappointment, Meyer pointed out at an Ohio luncheon that Michigan and Ohio State compete for the same talent but one team was winning more 10 games while the other was struggling to go above 0.500. His implication was clear: Michigan has talent but it was not being developed and put in good positions to succeed.

agree completely that coaching will help close that gap sooner than later. However, it doesn't make up the difference in speed or depth that is currently separating the 2 programs. I hate Ohio state more than anyone on this board, but they are the gold standard right now. until Harbaugh has his program running like a well oiled machine

coaching along the DL was excellent.  Coaching in the LB was pretty good.  Coaching in the DBs was ok, but wierdly inconsistent.

coaching on special teams was bad

coaching and management of everywhere on offense was VERY bad, especially QB.  The coaching at that position absolutely killed us.  I think that if Devin Gardner played under Harbaugh, he is probably in the NFL right now.

The recruiting classes have been really great but you see what happens when that talent doesn't come together and play as a team (MSU debacle). JH has proven he is the real deal when it comes to coaching and having his team ready. The Game this November will have an undefeated UM team facing an OSU team with possibly one loss. Rashan will make a big difference. The question mark will be at the QB postion for UM. OSU knows who their starter will be. Oh please, let's not have another controversy!
