Orange Bowl open thread
You know, when the game was announced, I was kinda "meh". But now that I'm home and ready to watch it, I'm kinda getting excited. The contrasting styles intrigue me, another Big Ten team, to see how they'll do, and the celebration that is the LAST BCS bowl game on FOX. Yay!
And it can't be worth than last night's game, can it?
If nothing else maybe we'll get more Taco Bell commercials...
(Though Iowa and GT will have a hard time topping TCU's cheer team).
January 5th, 2010 at 5:21 PM ^
than last night.
But I'm not so sure it will be.
There is a possibly for a low-scoring ugly affair if the Iowa D shuts down Tech's offense.
I'm not counting on the Iowa offense to do much of anything.

January 5th, 2010 at 9:25 PM ^
Did you play offense?
January 5th, 2010 at 5:22 PM ^
It's going to be interesting to see how Ferentz attempts to shut down the triple option.
January 5th, 2010 at 6:07 PM ^
I agree completely; it's really difficult to predict how Iowa's D will handle it and it should make this game interesting.
I wonder if jamiemac put some dollars down because I certainly don't have the confidence to. Some people are much, much better at predicting college football outcomes than I am.
January 5th, 2010 at 6:01 PM ^
Go Iowa! They are today's pick over at the JCB.
Georgia Tech is a southern school, so I think they have a fighting chance at competing with the eye candy talent of TCU.
But, Iowa gets the cover.
I love this game. Iowa's DL that specializes in making a QB look bad, going up against a great interior offensive line and the triple option. Classic stuff.
And, an Iowa win gives the Big 10 in first winning bowl season in years, for whatever that is worth.
January 5th, 2010 at 7:46 PM ^
Go Hawkeyes!
January 5th, 2010 at 8:13 PM ^
be the kiss of death, but I agree. +5.5 seems like too many points...
January 5th, 2010 at 8:32 PM ^
I begrudgingly took GT back when it was -4. Not sure I would have at the closing 5.5.
January 5th, 2010 at 6:07 PM ^
I agree. And +1 because your typo conjurred images of Lou Holtz typing that message.
January 5th, 2010 at 8:28 PM ^
I was rushing so I could get dinner then get back, and the IPhone thinks it knows more than I do (it's probably right).
Thanks for the best rationalization, ever.
January 5th, 2010 at 7:41 PM ^
I hope the Fox cameramen migrated from Arizona to Fl.
Their coverage was good last night, and the way they
displayed the game wasn't bad either.
Go Hawkeyes!
January 5th, 2010 at 7:46 PM ^
It seems like the BCS bowls stretch out so long that it is hard for me to keep interest. I love college football, will watch from noon until 2 AM on a given Saturday, but c'mon! I've already started to shift into NFL playoff mode.
January 5th, 2010 at 8:04 PM ^
Fox's coverage is Eddie George an "analyst."
January 5th, 2010 at 8:09 PM ^
Why can't people just sing the national anthem without pitching their voice all over the range?
/crotchety old 22 year old.
January 5th, 2010 at 8:15 PM ^
disappointed that we didnt get a better shot of that automobile coming out in front of the techsters.
i fear its not the same cameraman from last night
January 5th, 2010 at 8:17 PM ^
order the European sensation the T-Bow
Conveniently in Florida gator colors.
January 5th, 2010 at 8:21 PM ^
This was basically the BCS Bowl game I was most excited about. I'm not really pumped for it. I honestly have no idea how this one is going to shake out.
January 5th, 2010 at 8:25 PM ^
Ruh roh, Iowa fumbles the footbaw at midfield.
January 5th, 2010 at 8:25 PM ^
by McNutt
nice field position for GT.
January 5th, 2010 at 8:28 PM ^
horrific.
January 5th, 2010 at 8:30 PM ^
I was thinking about that. Johnson's offense is quite amazing to watch and very difficult to stop. But I wonder how many 17 or 18 year old high school year old stud high school seniors are going to be willing to run it. Now, he doesn't need a stud QB, I know, but it'll be interesting to see the kinds of QB recruits he has coming to GTech the next few years.
January 5th, 2010 at 8:42 PM ^
Answering my own question, they picked up Jordan Luallen last year, who was the #4 best scrambling QB in last years class.
January 5th, 2010 at 8:51 PM ^
...recruits in the mold of Justin Feagin. He needs recruits who can run and occasionally throw a pass.
FWIW, he took one three star dual-threat QB apiece each of the last two years, namely Jaybo Shaw and Jordan Luallen.
January 5th, 2010 at 8:55 PM ^
Ha. Jaybo.
January 5th, 2010 at 8:34 PM ^
some big yards.
Sounds familiar.

Moecki Open makes a comeback!
January 5th, 2010 at 8:35 PM ^
Put it in Iowa. No FG. TD.
January 5th, 2010 at 8:36 PM ^
McNutt!
January 5th, 2010 at 8:37 PM ^
Nice drive for Iowa.
January 5th, 2010 at 8:40 PM ^
Iowa exposed some favorable matchups for their WRs in that drive. Nicely done Hawkeyes
January 5th, 2010 at 8:42 PM ^
fans in the stands.
Maybe it is Fox, but I just haven't been into any of these BCS games besides the Rose Bowl.
January 5th, 2010 at 8:45 PM ^
That, and the other two games sucked.
Let the BCS game Thursday happily lead us to it's permanent home on ABC/ESPN.
January 5th, 2010 at 8:49 PM ^
show was saying that the Orange Bowl expected 40K-50K Iowa fans, but it didn't look like that many came. Seems like quite a few though. Plus Tech fans don't have a great reputation for traveling.
January 5th, 2010 at 8:42 PM ^
I really don't think GT wants to play catch-up with that offense. They better stop Iowa here.
January 5th, 2010 at 8:42 PM ^
Hawkeye D looking like they used the "extra" Big Ten layoff time between season and bowls quite well.
January 5th, 2010 at 8:48 PM ^
Is it too late to cancel moving the end of the season back a week next year?
It's obvious that the extra rest time is a huge advantage to all these Big10 teams winning their bowl games. ;-P
January 5th, 2010 at 8:43 PM ^
Georgia Tech is not looking particularly fresh right now.
January 5th, 2010 at 8:43 PM ^
I was hoping they would run that play from the wishbone.
January 5th, 2010 at 8:44 PM ^
I find it much easier to openly root for them than say "little brother" or even PSU for that matter.
Of course, I find it even easier to openly root against the Vest than any of the above.
January 5th, 2010 at 8:45 PM ^
Excuse my ignorance but everything I know about GT's offense comes from playing NCAA 2010. From what I understand it's really about deception and grinding down a D and can very rarely connect with a long vertical pass downfield (30+ yards without significant YAC).
Am I completely off base? If I'm not I like Iowa's chances if they get up by a few touches.
January 5th, 2010 at 8:53 PM ^
but when he does, they're often of the long yardage variety. Tech won't abandoned their bread and butter when they get down, though.
January 5th, 2010 at 8:49 PM ^
"Stanzi is perfect so far, 6 for 6."
Commentators love the jinx.
January 5th, 2010 at 8:50 PM ^
One of the few Big Ten teams I pull for in bowl games. Go Iowa! Iowa +5.5 I LOVE IT!
January 5th, 2010 at 8:52 PM ^
I don't think Iowa looked this good all year. (except against us when Stanzi was tossing the ball to wide open TE's.
January 5th, 2010 at 8:52 PM ^
looking like an all american thus far
January 5th, 2010 at 8:58 PM ^
He looks 100%, which is amazing given he had ankle surgery a couple months ago.
January 5th, 2010 at 8:52 PM ^
I think it's obvious from all the bad weather at warm weather bowl sites that the football weather gods are unhappy with Michigan not being in a bowl game. if anyone wants to go to the beach next January, they better be sending us a bowl invite.
And no, I've never used weather more in one sentence.
January 5th, 2010 at 8:53 PM ^
Boy Iowa is just shredding the Tech D. I may need to watch the UM/Iowa game again and and re-evaluate that loss.
