Orange Bowl contract finalized

Submitted by MaizeAndBlueWahoo on

The B1G will get $27.5 million of ESPN's money whenever they send a team to the Orange Bowl.  If it happens to be Notre Dame that goes, they'll get a huge chunk less, but I suspect it'll still be more than each B1G team would get in revenue sharing, but perhaps roughly the same that the attending team receives when you take into account the allowance.

Assuming travel allowance is about $1.5M, each B1G team stands to get over $2M whenever the conference sends a team to the Orange Bowl.

Question about revenue - I thought that teams that don't get to go to bowls actually come out ahead as they have no expenses, and all revenue is shared equally.  Is there a travel allowance for the team that goes to the bowl?

Back when there were 11 teams they used to split up the money 13 ways. One share for each team, one share for the Big Ten, and an extra share for going to the bowl. So teams that went to a bowl got a 2/13 share of that bowl revenue, plus 1/13 of all the other bowls.  Thus if you went to a bowl you got an extra share of one bowl, and if you went to a good bowl even better, because an extra 1/13 of the Rose payout is a lot more than 1/13 of the Pizza Pizza bowl.  Not sure if they just added a share when they added Nebraska, or redid it all.

I believe that the major conferences (not sure about all of them - I know the Big Ten does this anyway) and the bowl game committees do reimburse the participants for travel expenses, at least up to a certain amount depending on revenues. After that, the remainder being distributed among all the teams in the conference. The ACC and Big 12 even go as far as to reimburse teams for unsold tickets from what I've read.

Geez Louise I really wish the B1G would reimburse travel expenses for fans.  These SEC, ACC, Pac 12 and Big 12 fans can hop on a bus or car pool to half of their bowl games, while northern fans are just expected to fork over outrageous sums for plane tickets.  The advantages of being a warm-weather school really burns my britches sometimes.  I couldn't even come close to affording to go on a frivilous vacation at this point, but I wish there was some parity in travel distances.

Hell, Chicago should have a Bowl Game specifically designed for the cold, how awesome would that be around Christmas time!?  I'd like to see some of those teams from the Big 12 who play backyard passing football play some real man's football in the cold!

Just because I'd rather go to New Orleans than Miami.  But an ACC champ is probably easier than an SEC whatever in the Sugar.  Sigh...probably won't be headed back down there for another 30 years.
