"The Opening" Chat on ESPN: NOW (3-5pm EST)

Submitted by UM_lawful on

As we all know, The Opening is starting today and going throughout the week. There have been several posts detailing who is attending and what Michigan prospects will be there. ESPN is currently having a chat with their recruiting guys and prospects are supposed to be stopping by.

One of the comments from one of the recruiting guys:

"Some notes coming - Erik Magnuson said he'll be recruiting Zach Banner, the 6-8, 335-pound tackle from Washington, and Kyle Murphy, the 6-7, 270-pound tackle from California, hard this week."

From ESPN analyst Corey Long: "He says he's 100% committed to Ohio State, but he's visited Michigan. He has plans to visit Penn State and Miami in the future."

Someone commented that he is making a mistake committing to OSU and should commit to a school like Miami (FL).

Dunn disagrees, but is waiting until the NCAA makes a decision. Hears from coaches daily. He (Dunn) smiled and said he was committed to OSU. He is considering Michigan, PSU, and Miami (in addition to OSU).

Sheldon Day is hoping to cut down to 8-10 schools "soon."

Dan O'Brien will cut down to 6 schools this week. Alabama and Tennessee mentioned as two schools likely to make the cut.

It would be great to get both Banner and Murphy.  I have a feeling that out of the two Murphy is more likely to stay out west.

Depending on when Banner makes his decision, there might not be room in the class. Already having 4 OL in the class, and with Kalis and Diamond, it could get tight down the stretch. Don't get me wrong: I would welcome Banner and Murphy both. Just have to play the waiting game with when prospects make their decision.

here is an article about the woman who designed the now infamous swoosh:

http://www.oregonlive.com/business/index.ssf/2011/06/nikes_swoosh_brand_logo_hits_4.html

she was a part time graphic design student at portland state where phil knight was an assistant professor who overheard her saying that she could not afford to take some class and offered her some side-work to help out.  she was paid $2 an hour and charged Knight a total of $35 for the logo.  interesting read about the sporting good bohemoth starting out...

I am interested to hear some updates on Terry Richardson. More  interested in his responses regarding Michigan than I am in seeing how he does at the event.  He just seems like, from previous commments, that he may be one to watch with schools continuing to recruit him.  I hope he stays blue because with him, Gant, Standifer, and hopefully Wilson by the end of the week, that this could be a very good secondary class.

What makes you think that?  He has a teammate and another good friend already committed (and seemingly solid) as well as other past teammates already on the team.  I know he wasn't big on Michigan 6 months ago, but since he committed I haven't heard anything from him about that.

Its just my personal opinion, nothing substantial to back it up. It just felt to me as if his commitment was a knee jerk reaction due to a few factors including what you mentioned. He has friends here, the class was filling up at a fast rate, and I'm sure he was feeling some sort of rush, intentional or not, from the staff. I hope I'm wrong and he stays blue till the end. It just wouldn't surprise me to see him at least entertain some teams willing to make a hard push for him.

I believe someone posted this on here before. But, it's a plot of an advanced civilization to peacefully take over the planet by captivating all of sports fans minds over these types of events. They will soon have us obsessing about "Sporting Events" until we don't realize that we are trapped in the Matrix.

Anyone who wants Nike back should heed the event.

Check out the website, Oregon's green at one of the main colors, an O in opening stylized to be dominate and a solo letter just like the Oregan O.  Plenty of subtle pushing of the Oregon brand there.  Also a reminder that the Nike accounts support Oregon.

So sign with Nike and give Phil Knight more money to funnel to that school basically, pass.

Haha no kidding. When Corey Long got the guy in charge of the event for questions, I asked him his thoughts for who would win the National Championship, and then asked if he was contractually obligated to say Oregon. ESPN actually posted my question, but took off the part about Oregon... go figure.

i attended the "weigh in" portion of "The Opening" today just for a part of it.  This is where each athlete was introduced.  For the part I attended, T-Rich, Ross, and Standifer were introduced.  Only ~5% of all athletes wore hats of their school, but all three of these guys had michigan hats on.  I shouted "Go Blue" after their intro to show them some Michigan love.

When they were dismissed, T-Rich and Ross came over to shake my hand and said that they appreciated the shout out.  Magnuson shouted "nice shirt!" as he walked by (I wore my Michigan polo today).

I'm reporting this not to put the focus on me, rather the amount of Michigan love these guys have going into their senior season.  I will attend more of this event and share what I can.

I won't be reporting about what happens in the athlete lounge since it's a safe haven for the athletes from the media and scouting services. (there sure are a lot of interviews happening outside the lounge.). What i will say that certain offensive linemen that Michigan fans may be interested in were spending a lot of time together.
