Open Thread/DVR Reminder: Michigan basketball @ Iowa 1:00 Big Ten Network

Submitted by ClearEyesFullHart on

Men's basketball tips off against Iowa at 1:00 today on the B1G network.  Michigan has the better team, but that has been the case for several years, and Iowa has been pesky.  Dylan(by way of Ken Pomeroy) has Michigan winning by 4 http://www.umhoops.com/2012/01/13/game-18-michigan-at-iowa-preview/#more-24200 ,

He also points out that Iowa barely shoots from downtown at all...I'm thinking woot 1-3-1?

Vegas likes Michigan by a field goal.  Beilein says Iowa is going to try to get out and run, and that Michigan will have to play significantly better than Iowa to win on the road(why does that sound familiar?)http://www.umhoops.com/2012/01/13/video-notes-quotes-john-beilein-previews-iowa/

My personal take: Iowa has serious Multiple Personality Disorder, as evidenced by their Wisky/Minny road wins vs their baby seal impersonation against those two SU schools who celebrated when Nebraska joined the conference(because they finally have a school to look down on).

That red-headed kid Aaron White is pretty good, and Basabe is still there, but I dont really think either one is ready to keep up with Novak, the Notorious SMOTRYCZ or Morgan. If Stu can slow down Matt Gatens(and all evidence suggest he WILL be able to) I like Michigan's chances.

Out coached, out hustled, out shot, out rebounded, out assisted, and  more turnovers, makes things difficult.

Seriously though Iowa has 18 assists on 24 field goals, that is pretty impressive. Good team win for Iowa.

This team is highly overrated. Today we really reminded me of last years MSU team. No inside presence at all, guys floating around the 3 point line, killed on the glass. This was a horrible loss. Hopefully it can be turned into a positive. We need work everywhere.

This is a team coming off a huge comeback win and facing their biggest rival in the next game.  They had a mandatory day on Thursday (per Beilein's presser), so they had about half a day to prep for this, once you factor in travel.  Also, while Iowa may be one of the worst teams in the B1G, that isn't that bad a thing to be.  They are going to approach the top 100 in the RPI after this win, which comes after a win on the road over Wisconsin. Michigan was lucky each of the last three years to escape Iowa City with a win, but the shots just didn't fall today.  These are college kids, and games like this happen  Let's move on, learn from this, and beat MSU on Tuesday.

Everyone needs to calm down.  It's basketball, probably the easiest sport to get losses to worse teams.  We played like shit, just hope we don't play like shit for the rest of the season.

I appreciate what Belien has done with this program and he's a great coach, but he's taken us out of rythm the last two games sitting our leaders with two fouls. Our guys need to figure out a way to get up for these lesser teams, you can't only play your best against the best teams. Burke showed some fight near the end and Novak played good, hopefully those two can elevate the play of THJ and Smot come Tuesday

31 3-point attempts vs. 21 2-pointers today. That's obscene.

I need someone to step up and defend Beilein's offensive strategy. Don't just say "well that's the offense." Tell me WHY that's the offense for THIS TEAM. This isn't JB's first team at Michigan that have been somewhere between mediocre and bad at 3-point shooting yet the one constant of the scheme is that open 3's are always given a green light to everyone.

A "bombs away" attack does NOT work when you have brick-chuckers like we do.

We shot 30 vs. Northwestern and only made 7. In the last three games, this team is 19-of-76 from beyond the arc (25 percent). In the Big Ten season, we are under 30 percent (43-of-145). These are bad numbers for any team. For a coach who loves small lineups and has recruited several players almost purely for their supposed shooting ability, it sucks beyond belief.

Beilein's bizarre encouragement to keep chucking is hurting us. Why Hardaway is not told to cool it on the jumpers and find better ways to use his slashing ability is beyond me.

Wow, just checked in to see how the game went. I'm really glad I didn't watch this. While most on here won't agree, we shouldn't be in the Top 25 when the next rankings come out. We are a painfully overrated team. Have been all season.

Next year we might be a Top 15 team. This year we're just not. Top teams don't lose games like this. Period. Road game or not. Bad officiating or not. Missing shots or not. You don't lose by 20 to Iowa if you're a contender.

is no longer there for Tue. If they lose on Tue, it could very well turn into a five game slide w/ the next three on the road after this. Coach B better have them hitting the gym as soon as they step off the f'n plane.

Is absolutely brutal. 4 at home, 8 on the road. 4 at home = MSU, Ohio, Illinois, and Indiana. This could get ugly if shots don't start falling.
<br>That said, lot of ball to be played.
