Open Thread: USA vs. Russia

Submitted by goblueram on

Hello out there, we're on the air, it's hockey...morning today

Should be a good one as two medal favorites face off - USA vs the host Russians.  Datsyuk is not playing at 100% for Russia, but of course they still have a ton of scoring talent on the team.

USA vs. Russia - 7:30 EST, NBCSN

For anyone in Chicago, the Michigan bar "Diag" is open for the game.

USA! USA! USA!

when we played an exhibition against the Soviets at MSG and got our asses handed to us.  I also was fortunate to witness the Miracle on Ice - from Bursley Hall.  Hated the Soviets then and still do. Hope our NHL player’s hand the Russians their asses.

Hope we see a lot of this today:

Orpik got boarded pretty blatantly by Ovechkin. You could see on the replay that it was pretty close to being his chin landing on that inexplicable plastic shoulder they put halfway up the boards. You'll see a play or two end like that in the NHL per month it seems and it pretty much always ends in multi game suspensions.

Not exactly as this one went down below, but it's close enough for illustrative purposes. Orpik was closer to stationary and Ovechkin was approaching closer to perpendicular to the boards.

All tied up:  USA 1, Pavel and the Soviet Oregon Red Ducks 1

It's gonna be a tough 2 minutes, though, at the start of the 3rd with the Russkies on a PP.  We survive that and we're in good shape as the better team.  From what I'm seeing, both teams are about even on their top 2 lines; it's when the rest of each team is on the ice that it's Advantage USA.
