Kind of off topic but too cool not to share.
Kind of off topic but too cool not to share.
honestly, I think MSU wins this game...ECAC hockey sucks until they prove otherwise.
Also...MSU's jerseys are awful
Or at least proving that MSU sucks more
Union crushed UM at Yost back in Novemeber....
has referred to MSU as "Michigan" and "Western Michigan"...he is terrible
As long as I can watch in HD, I'm happy. I don't know what state of mind I would have to be in to pay a lot of attention to Melrose's interpretation of the game, but this Yoohoo isn't going to get me there, so I'm all good.
If I wasn't doing other stuff on my computer right now, which means I can't always see the screen, I would turn the sound off to avoid him.
His mullet is glorious though.
Ejected after a checking from behind penalty (5 minute PP for Union). Dumbass move which could really screw MSU (lol what a shame).
Sparty gotta Spart.
Takes a lot of balls to hit a guy between the numbers when he has his head down.
Solid call by the referee. Chelios needs to learn to control his hits and not attempt to kill his team's chances at an upset.
Dean Chelios was just ejected for a hit from behind. Yes it was from behind but hard to convince that was worth 5 and an ejection.
That was an incredibly dangerous play and totally unnecessary, that play gets you ejected almost every time in college and it is the right call.
Hits to the head are a point of emphasis. The Union player had his back to Chelios and his head down; he was defenseless. Chelios finished the hit and drove the Union player's head into the boards. This is exactly what the NCAA is trying to prevent, and the 5 minute majors for stuff like this have been pretty common. I wasn't sure if they'd give him the game DQ, but it wasn't surprising.
Aren't DQs automatic if a major is called in college?
A generic major penalty doesn't require a game misconduct or disqualification (Merrill's boarding last week is an example). A checking from behind major requires either a game misconduct or a game disqualification.
I just opened up the rulebook if you want some NCAA rule examples verbatim when I can open it.
Wow how do they call that hit "not vicious" even after seeing the replay?
Wow. Really impressive PK by MSU so far.
Spoke too soon ... 1-0 Union
Yep. The superstitious in me made that comment on purpose...
Union scores on a 2 on 1 during a bit of 4 vs. 4 play
Coincidentally, the Union player who beat Yanakeff was Novak.
Hoping Union wins. I thought this region set up nicely for Sparty to make a Frozen Four run if they played well and focused for two games.
That definitely looks like a puck in the net, can't believe it took these yahoos more than one look to see it. May have been played with a high stick.
Reviewing the height of the stick has to be the only reason it's taking this long
Under Review...puck looks like it went in...pending official review
does the ref, who is right behind the net, not see that puck hit the inside of the net?
its not like he was in the corner, he was standing right behind the net...that is inexcusable
that might be what is taking so long...but still, WTF?
WOW Robbed in an NCAA game!!! Can't believe the terrible offcials in NCAA hockey.
Eh, don't really agree with that one...
Must have been a high stick.
EDIT: the net was dislodged? That's a terrible call. Also, you'd think the ref standing RIGHT BEHIND THE NET would have noticed it. I guess the CCHA hasn't cornered the market on derpy officials.
Net was off
they had to have said the net moved prior to the puck crossing the line...either way, MSU was screwed EDIT: that was the ruling
that should be a penalty to Union for knocking the net off
Sparty got screwed there, even if the net is on the ice that puck still goes in.
Gongshow? Even if it is to MSU, that's gongshow at its finest.
EDIT: Not gongshow, just terrible, terrible rule.
Is it really a bad rule, though? I think it would be worse if we relied on a referee eyeballing where the goal frame would be if it were flat on the ice.
If the goal cage has been moved or dislodged. The goal frame is considered to be displaced if any portion of the goal frame is not in its proper position (e.g., frame must be completely flat on the ice surface, goal posts must be in proper place and affixed securely in place with its pegs)
Remember, if Union had displaced the net, the referee has the authority to award a goal if he feels the puck entering the net is "imminent" (and it's a penalty even if the goal isn't awarded).
I agree on this one. By and large, I favor rules that are objective rather than subjective. The net being off is something I can tell by looking at the video and no one can debate it. Same thing goes for the anything off the skate vs. distinct kicking motion debate in my mind, and probably should be the same for the the ball hit the ground but he had possession issue. Yes, these objective standards lead to frustration at times, but they're much less subject to officials' whims. And once we start letting officials' whims decide things, we get the intent to blow rule. (Bonus: Gongshow officials ALWAYS intend to blow.)
A goal shall not be allowed "If the goal cage has been moved or dislodged. The goal frame is considered to be displaced if any portion of the goal frame is not in its proper position (e.g., frame must be completely flat on the ice surface, goal posts must be in proper place and affixed securely in place with its pegs)." [Rule 6-18-c-12]
Even though it was on its pegs, the frame was not in its proper position when the puck entered the net.
Wow, kind of feel for Sparty. We've been screwed over and had goals taken away in this tourney before. Hopefully they can knot it up so it negates the mess up.
Lots of empty seats in Bridgeport.
1-0 Union beginning of Period 2.
Especially since Union's total enrollment is 2,000 students. They could bus their entire school to Bridgeport and only fill a couple sections. MSU is 15+ hour drive (unless you go through Canada) so makes it tough to get any sort of attendance.
I would expect a decent crowd for the UMass Lowell Game.
I think that rule screwed over MSU in the Big Chill game too
just cannot close today. Union caught a break there.
MSU barely misses by sending a puck through the crease, Union comes down and scores to go up 2-0...
Union goal @ 16:40 2nd Period
but Union now up 2-0 and I doubt they let Sparty seriously challenge for the lead again.
with absolutely horrid rebound control on that 2nd union goal
Schenectady is only 150 miles from Bridgeport. I can't believe there aren't more Union fans there.
They only have 2,000 total students? How many do you think actually would come.... half, a quarter thats like 1 section in the stands.
Union should exert their physicality more they are a much bigger team than sparty
So do they wait for dark to start burning couches? Did they ever stop after last night or does this just make them continue longer?
do State fans even care about hockey?
They care about burning couches. There's a 60% chance of precipitation tonight, so they better start early.
Melrose makes a good point, there's nothing happening in front of the Union goalie.
a much easier sport when you don't have immediate need for a goal. Union is playing their hand beautifully, and I don't see Sparty getting back in this.
Hockey's a cool game because weird things happen. All it takes is one fluke goal, for Sparty, and the game may change.
about the sport. That said, Union is playing some very solid defense and probably won't be taking a lot of risks, and Sparty isn't looking like they can get back in it and force the issue.
I agree, and if Union scores on this PP, they'll just play keep-away in the 3rd.
The most important goal in a 2 goal game is the next one.
There's a HUGE difference between 3-0 and 2-1.
Very true. PP over for Union as they take a slashing penalty.
I never realized you played. You went to New Trier, right? Did you play there or did you go the midget route?
I played HS all four years, Sabres from silver mites to bantams.
New Trier Blue 03-04 and 04-05, I was a goalie. White helmet, Navy and Kelly pads and gloves. Played Wilmette before that. Graduated high school in 2005 if you're trying to figure out if we'd played each other
New Trier is a great program. I don't remember playing Wilmette too much when I played club, but maybe in a tournament or something. You're three years ahead of me, though, so I doubt we ever played each other.
Also, you seem surprisingly normal for a goalie. Maybe that's because it's been a few years?
/s or :) or whatever, obviously.
Edit: Realized I didn't say I played for Jacobs High School. We were pretty good my sophomore and junior years, but apparently we're 1-12 this season, so obviously not so good.
And most hockey goalies are only a little different. It's definitely a different mentality, but one that's awesome in my own opinion. Linemen talk about how great it is to dominate another person, I have yet to find a feeling in sports better than stopping someone when he thinks he's scored a goal. He starts to raise his arms, you stop the shot, and just watch the arms come down slowly.
I like to think I'm pretty normal (I'm also a mechanical engineer... so I realize that normal is a relative term) but there definitely is something off with someone volunteering and trying to get hit with a frozen piece of rubber that could do serious damage to you.
Union's band is really bringing the shrill this afternoon.
Nice play by Union, Nice save by Sparty
How did they boink that?
PP goal Sparty - Look out
after escaping a cluster fuck 3-0 by Union...2-1 Union, MSU PP goal
but he didn't have to act like a douche after he scored. He acted like he never scored before.
Especially after Union wiffed on the 3 on 0 shorthanded.
2-1 Union after 2 periods.
Anybody else notice that Michael Spath over at rivals picked Michigan to go to the national championship AND LOSE TO MINNESOTA-DULUTH!? that will be a bitter grudge match if that matchup actually happens and i would hate Minnesota Duluth forever if Michael Spath were amazingly right in his bracket prediction.
on the other hand, i am salivating at the idea of michigan winning a rematch against duluth and writing the final chapter on what would be the final saga of the hunwick story.
And if I'm being real, I don't think we make the finals and maybe not even the frozen four? Michigan is notoriously bad when being a 1 seed. I think the 3 times we made the title game we were a 2, a 3, and a 2 seed. We play a better giant-killer than a giant
The two most recent times Michigan won the championship, they were in the top 4 of the PWR. They were a 2-seed in 1996, but #2 or #3 (I can't remember) in the committee's PWR selection formula--there were only 2 regions.
In 1998, they were 4th in PWR, but only 3rd in the West Region, so they did not get the bye. So even though they were technically a 2-seed and a 3-seed, they would have received 1-seeds both years if there had been 4 regionals instead of 2.
6 previous 1-seed appearances in the tournament under Red Berenson, they've reached the Frozen Four 4 times, lost in the second round once and lost in the first round once (Air Force). I don't really think that's so horrible. 7 one seeds/22trips = 0.32 4 FF as a one seed/11 FF = 0.36. I'm sure there are a lot of fancy math stuff I'm missing to make this iron clad, but I'm OK with being a 1-seed
However, those stats also tell me we're 0-6 in the last 6 frozen four appearances as a 1 seed
0-4. But Red is only 5-9 overall in Frozen Four games. So he's 5-5 in Frozen Four games as a non-one seed. Which is actually interesting in itself, a little bit, I think, but outside of 1996 and 1998, Red only has one Frozen Four win, so that's just a whole separate mess, I think.
The ice is starting to tilt toward the Union end.
Unions's D looks as good as described but play has been in Union's end a ton this period. I think MSU gets another goal
I dunno, Union is very poised. They're starting to break Sparty's pressure.
I feel like this period has blazed by. Maybe it seems like it's faster when I'm not watching Michigan / being terrified
how are there only 4 minutes left? It's a lot more relaxing to watching non-Michigan hockey
they are gonna tie this game
Wow, big save by Union goalie.
Union is gassed. Reminds me of last year in the game that must not be named
That save by Grosenick was unbelievable. Might have saved the game.
Two minutes left. When does Sparty pull Yanakef?
Sparty gonna Spart.
So, we want Ferris to win, right? Assuming we win tonight, they scare me much less than Denver. We've already beaten them twice, and the only 3 games they've played in the last month have been the 3 against BGSU in the CCHA tournament.
I just want to make sure my rooting interests are aligned with everyone else's.
A team from the CCHA scares me way way less than an equivalent team from any other conference. If we ended up in a frozen four with 3 other CCHA teams, I'd feel fairly confident about our chances. Plus Ferris isn't as offensively deadly as Denver
I'm rooting for Ferris for those reasons. An odd truth: they've only won one game - and that being against BGSU - since February 18th. They aren't exactly rolling into this thing with a lot of momentum.
PP for Union on a Sparty hook. Less than 2 minutes left. Queme Los Couches!!
That's probably gonna be the game. Yeesh. Best MSU can do now is 5-on-5 with an empty net.
I am amused at the thought of MSU basketball and hockey being eliminated within 24 hours of each other. /GLASS HOUSES NO JINX
3-1, 1:18 left
And a really dirty board from MSU after the play. Sheesh
Rocket from Simpson, 3-1 Union.
MSU needs to channel their BU-Miami 2009 here
Game Dutchmen. RIP Couches.
At first I read that as "Game Couches", which of course reminded me of
To which I reply:
See, I never just did things just to do them, c'mon I mean, what I'm gonna do just all of the sudden just jump up and grind my feet in somebody's couch like it's something to do? Come on, I got a little more sense than that. ...Yeah, I remember grinding my feet into Eddie's couch.
Just got back from Bridgeport. Thoroughly enjoyed the ECAC beating Sparty, who would have been easy to root against even if I weren't already a Michigan fan. MSU's strong suit was cheese, particularly in the form of little after-the-whistle BS (after Union's last goal was only the most flagrant example). Union looked a little tentative, and gassed in the third. Their goalie may have to carry them through against Miami (presumably) if the ECAC is to snag an elusive Frozen Four berth.
Puck drop is IMMINENT. Go Ferris
Mmmmmmmm. The sounds of 100 fans and crappy pep bands echoing throughout a cavernous, empty arena. Sounds like NCAA hockey regionals
They're just dressed like empty seats.
Hockey East refs in the Ferris-Denver game. That means about a 90 percent chance of WCHA refs for Michigan-Cornell, which is mostly good. Michigan doesn't do well with Hockey East refs.
It's pretty much guaranteed that Hockey East refs will do the final of the Green Bay regional tomorrow, because Green Bay is the only regional without a Hockey East team.
I don't know about you guys, but I'm about ready to puke over here. Too much anxiety about this game.
ESPNU needs to stop showing that damn Minnesota Duluth goal every commercial break.
I've accepted the fact that it will be played incessantly. Especially, during Michigan games
It's better than those Pitbull commercials.
Ferris looks pretty good, but obviously a step down in skill. They'll have to play a tight, defensive game to win. If it opens up and teams get lots of shots / lots of PP chances, Ferris will almost certainly lose
We'll see what they can do here
Ferris power play looking pretty good.
Literally about a few dozen people in the arena for this game right now. Luv ur logic, NCAA.
Go Dutchmen! Hopefully, Upstate NY's only good performance of the day.
Very good hockey games today so far.
Huge saves by Taylor Nelson.
Who / how was the first goal scored in the Miami-UML game? Just turned it on
UML took a shot of the crossbar, the rebound went in off a body. After review it was upheld. UML actually scored again, then after review they took it away for goaltender interference. UML is outplaying Miami, Smith and Czarnik have been pretty quiet.
I'm surprised Miami isn't winning 4-0 already. Miami just seems to be a bad tourney team sometimes. Seems like they usually lose in inexplicable loses / chokes / breakdowns / blowouts
Miami is lucky to not be down 3-0 UMass Lowell had one goal disallowed already, and has been dominating Miami
After 40 Ferris still leads 1-0
Make that 2-0 UML with a shorty, Czarnik is on the scoresheet, turnover at the UML blueline, lead to a breakaway goal. Knapp looks shaky to say the least
UMass shorthanded goal. Miami turned it over at the blue line off a puck that bounced, and UMass had a fast guy on a breakaway.
And when it scored.....absolutely nothing from the crowd. Damn NCAA
That was a really bad pass on that one. Miami is looking bad. I almost feel bad bc a good friend of mine is a Miami fan and I can feel has NCAA-tourney-pain
Ferris goal. Up 2-0 now in the 3rd
Is the king of 3rd period chokes. It wont last long...
ESPN3 is definitely your friend if you've got it. I'm watching the Ferris St game on my TV with my Xbox and I'll get the Michigan game if Miami runs over.
3-0 UML. This feels like a classic miami playoff game.
Ferris only up 2-1 with 10:51 left in the game
who wins the FSU/Denver game at this point, I just want it to end in regulation. My reasons for this are two-fold:
1. I'm already way too anxious for the Michigan/Cornell game and if I have to wait longer for it, I might explode.
2. Whoever wins the late game, I want them to have more time for rest before the game tomorrow.
2. Whoever wins the late game, I want them to have more time for rest before the game tomorrow.
What do you mean? You mean between us and Cornell?
the late game tonight is between Michigan and Cornell. I would have just said something about "more rest for Michigan", but that's tempting the hockey gods WAY too far, I think.
That Denver-Ferris State game is a good'un. They should switch over.
DU's goalie is pulled w 2:17 left
Ferris iced it w 57.2 left
Ferris ices it again w 49.0 left. Too quick on that. They had some room to move and probably couldve got the ENG
Ferris nearly got the ENG. DU knocked their own next off accidentally. 1.3 left w the faceoff in the DU zone. Its over
Ferris wins 2-1
This next hour is going to take forever.
Miami took a too many men penalty that looks like it was called by the linesmen. Enrico slammed his clipboard down and said "Such a bad f**king call! The f**king linesmen!". Humorous
Well, Drew Stanton was a Jet for a New York minute. He asked to be traded and now he's a Colt.
Where is the UM-Cornell game? Is the start time pushed back due to the Ferris-Denver finish? Can't find links on ESPN3 or on firstrowsports.eu.
It's on ESPNU and ESPN3 at 9 p.m. ET.
Ferris-DU ended in regulation
Maybe NCAA hockey wouldn't be relegated to tape delay on ESPNU if it looked like it was a fun atmosphere. I can't imagine it's very interesting thing to watch on TV for an exploring fan is you're watching North Massachusetts State play West Minnesota Tech in front of 100 fans. If people turned on a regional game at Yost, then I bet some people would hang around and watch.
Shameless plug for anyone that wants to follow the game and chat with your fellow fans tonight, I got a live blog going at MichiganHockey.net (and we got a link to a live ESPNU stream that's NOT ESPN3 for those who can't get it!). Come one, come all!
Miami scores twice in about 15 seconds. Now 3-2 Lowell.
Good God, Miami just made it a one goal game
River Hawk no!
Miami has come all the way back. Hard to see them losing with all this momentum.
Miami ties it up
Miami's gonna win this game 5-3 at this rate. My friend from Miami is much happier now
I just hope this game ends in regulation. I don't care who wins. Just don't cut into my game
I don't care about Umass-Miami. Show our Wolverines!
Another checking from behind penalty. 5 minute major and game misconduct. Advantage Miami. Prolly shouldn't have been 5 minutes, Miami guy turned at the last second and it wasn't that hard of a hit
Miami is the kind of team who ia going to toe the line with how aggressive they hit. Once the whistles went away you could see the checks getting higher towards the head.
Have to play the last 3:30 of regulation defending a 5 minute major. Good luck with that. Just lose quick so I can watch Michigan in HD.
I thought this would be tougher.
The attendance at these games makes me furious. I'd kill to go to one of these games
