I have requested that we can have a live blog for the hoops game and the bowl game, but in the meantime, let's cheer for the lads here.
If mods are needed to get a live blog started, I can help do that.
I won't be getting on to mod until 9:30 at the earliest and if we're being honest, that'll probably turn into 9:50 or so.
Things I would like to see:
It'll be interesting to see (not this game) if Beilein goes more zone than the previous two seasons now that we are certainly going to be out-talented against 4ish B10 teams.
Holy Cross is interesting. They played North Carolina to single digits and were respectable against a solid Belmont team. But they've also lost two of their last three to a couple of pretty mediocre opponents. We should handle them fine at home, but can't play sloppy or lackadaisical and let them hang around.
Here's a working (for now) link before someone asks:
Just some thoughts related to MBB. With McGary out, what does that do for scholarships next year? Hatch medical redshirt? If they do then they are full and although a long shot, Dante Exum is looking at Michigan. Probably going pro, but if GRIII comes back (I know most feel his is gone, but it is a possibility) and McGary stays another year, Michigan is really attractive to a one and done PG.
But the only way this longshot happens is if Horford does not get a fifth. I am sure Beiliein felt McGary and GRIII were gone, so it will be an interesting situation.
Hopefully Irvin and Walton can continue to develop this year. Searching for a silver lining, I know.
There is no space for additional scholarships next year. In fact, we're over-booked by one.
There's no way GR3 is back. Okay, maybe a 1% chace. So, we're full if MM were to come back and Horford isn't given a firm handshake, which he won't be.
I agree that he's likely gone, but I think it's far more likely than 1% that she stays. Lots of variables at play. He hasn't had the season scouts expected (stock dropped), and his best buddy might be back another year. Combine that with the desire to have another run at a championship (assuming we don't this year) and a potential love of college life and I think it's more like 60-40 that he leaves. It's a long season though and plenty of time for things to play out.
On the other hand, I don't think MM is definitely coming back. It seems like an easy bet at this point but a 21 year old sophomore looking at playing without his best buddy might consider taking his rehab at the NBA level. I could see a late first round pick or early second used on a recovering MM. He'd be a higher ceiling higher floor than most picks.
Anybody else think it is interesting McGary was pretty mobile at the game tonight, He was tight trying to shoot ( in a suit), but back surgery gives me images of not moving for weeks. I really wonder what type of surgery it was. He may be back this year?
that is because he hasn't had the surgery yet. It is supposed to be next week if I am not mistaken?
That would sure make a lot of sense. I just assumed he would have had it already. Pretty dumb. Please ignore the post, I have already punished myself. ( watching the MSU Football game again)
Let's Go Blue!
I sure hope the b-ball team comes out with more energy than hockey.
What's with the long twos?
JMo with the nice charge draw.
D'oh! Missed dunk.
No rebounding. Ugh.
That second three by HC never goes up if Robinson isn't just sorta walking around after he missed the steal attempt.
There is a live blog on blyve right now, but it seems that it's suspended until either mods are selected or it's solely for the bowl game.
Nice passing sequence there! 3 for Levert
Chris Webber would've reverse jammed the shit out of that, Jordan!
If only JM had the athleticism of CWebb... well we wouldn't be worrying too much about McGary being out.
Very nice to see the outside shots falling early - and even nicer to see them after extra passes.
I like the good passing early on.
lol that pass was too good for Horford to finish properly
We're playing really well right now.
Pretty good minutes for Walton.
Stauskas is tough inside - great rebound and the nice drop-off pass to Horford.
Ugh... what a flop. Let them play.
Come on Spike! Not a good shot.
Horford missed a wide open Irvin for a three :(
I do like that it appears they're making a concerted effort to attack the basket so far, Stauksas especially. Good things happen when you attack.
I'm really glad that he worked hard in the off season to improve things besides his shooting.
The drive is going to be there for him in most cases because teams are guarding him so tight to shutdown his 3pt shots.
I like our offense. Defense needs to tighten up.
I swear that Holy Cross guy took 4 steps.
Michigan does not look the same in transition this year. Burke and THJ were great at pushing the ball up the court.
I wonder what the advanced stats say about playing Spike and Walton at the same time.
Robinson has turned it on recently.
I love aggressive GR3!
Johnny on the spot.
Good to see Morgan aggressive there. He has been so passive underneath since the Indiana game (or most of his career)
Irvin resembles Lavall Jordan - kind of weird.
Woo fast break dunk!
Holy Cross doesn't look like they're even interested in defending the paint. May as well keep driving.
Take by Caris and finished after the contact. I like how assertive he is this season
Nice play by LeVert. Stop settling for outside shots and drive to the basket.
generate points and outplay the HC point guard. No reason for him to lose that matchup.
Nice job by the Maize Rage there, or whoever's there seeing as it's break
First time I've ever seen that work.
We've pulled off the shot clock things multiple times now this season. Always nice to see, even though it shocks me every time it actually works. As a player, how do you let yourself get influenced by that when you know you're on the road?
Maybe I don't understand as I never played D1 basketball haha.
We pull that off as much as J-Mo draws fouls.
the rim. Exactly what he needs to do. Nice finish.
Now that Mitch will very likely stick around next year we could be very very good. The center/forward depth will be a very big weakness but the guards will be great and better at feeding Mitch though.
I would have liked to have seen some more effort on D, and we had a handful of careless plays offensively, but overall a decent half. Holy Cross is better than the likes of Houston Baptist. Another half like this one, and we win fairly comfortably.
Thank GOODNESS the non-conference slate ends after this game. I think NCAAB has too many non-conference games. Trim that number to five or six and make the remaining games against Big Ten teams.
I can get behind that
I see the McGary injury like the Jake Ryan injury. It sucks this year but we should get him back for next year so the silver lining is that our bball team and football defense should be really good next year.
Some select halftime stats:
|Off. Reb. %||30.77%||16.67%|
|Def. Reb. %||83.33%||69.23%|
Once again thanks for the numbers!
I wouldn't be so sure about MM coming back. Remember, he's older than most sophomores already and coming back is risky to draft position. Sure, you could re-establish yourself as a lotto pick. But you could also destroy your draftability if the injury comes up again.
If I had to bet, I'd place money on him coming back, but I think it's far from a sure thing.
Agreed. I have a weird feeling that his career at Michigan might be over.
I agree. He will evaluate after recovering from surgery. Back issues can be tough, let alone for an athlete. Whether he comes back or not, I hope he has a good recovery. He seems to be a great kid.
something to consider too though, with back surgery he's bound to lose his conditioning and strength since he won't be able to work out. He'll lose his body during recovery and will need to get back in shape. He might need to stay 1 more year to get his body back to NBA acceptability.
I just seen the 1st half highlights, and that was the first time I've seen Levert dunk. I've be waiting to see that.
What a nice one handed outlet pass
Yeesh that graphic with us 11th out of 12 in the conference was not nice to see.
Yea that kind of shocked me. The B1G if going to be tuff without MM
a way of focusing the team around their other strengths. Morgan isn't horrible and will probably be a plus on the defensive end, particularly with communication.
Can of whoop-ass being opened...good to see
Just about puked when they showed all that red and white in The Big House!! Since it's for the Red Wings it's almost bearable, I guess.
Street ball time - gonna be some hilarious dunks
Also some flying bodies in the lane with no fouls called . Though I can't complain about the refs at all.
Fuck Stephen Bardo. Clearly still butt hurt about 1989.
Entire Illini Nation is butt hurt about 1989. It hasn't gone away and it kills them more than anything.
Anyone remember back 2 years or more when the knock on JB was that no top players would come to UM because JB coached a boring, system limiting style?
I hope that Walton's runners start falling. I really like his drives and the shots look good. Just not falling yet.
Did I hear them pipe in "Jumparound"? If so, why?
Probably to get the crowd to jump around. Just my two cents.
Stauskas might have the quickest release for any shooter I've ever seen at Michigan. That alone (with the fact he can make em) could help him play for a long time in the NBA
ALL WHITE TEAM!!!
I don't like the fact that we let them get 66 points.
Easy game to play flat, but really good to see the guys play with so much energy and confidence.
Congrats to Beilein and gang for a ver strong performance.
Looked decent. Nothing to get excited about
88-66, good guys.
Comment field is required.
Just don't put anything in the subject
What was the big man rotation like?
Morgan and Horford until garbage time. Both played well.
Horford off the bench. Max didn't see the floor until the last minute
My take from the game : Both bigs do not go up strong or alter shots. Morgan continues to put the ball on the floor instead of going up strong - disappointing for a senior. Holy Cross' center #50 (Dudzinski?) outplayed our bigs... Nik, GRIII, and Caris are elite athletes and will have to carry us to wins, in spite of our weak low post play.... Walton Jr needs to grow up faster or else Spike will be playing most of the crunch time minutes... Irvin is getting better each week and could be a sleeper during Big10 play....Beilein will have to coach a few wins by changing defenses. I do like how this team breaks presses... McGary was having fun goofing around in pregame, durng the game, and post game and was moving aorund reasonably well in his suit (no signs of favoring his back). He reminds me of Lewan: just a big kid having fun,who enjoys his teammates and college life. I'd bet he is back next year with a vengence and this team will be damned good....would be nice if the big kid from FLorida can give us quality minutes next year... finally Crisler is just a great venue to see a game. Never thought I would say that about a place that used to have the charm of Joe Louis.
